Kaibren rarely felt nervous, which was possibly a side effect of being the Weyrwoman's son and having most things go his way, but there was some apprehension in his stomach as he walked toward the Weyrlingmaster's Second's office. The decision to finally Stand wasn't one that Kaibren took lightly. Everyone in his family was a dragonrider, his father had been, his mother, his sister, and his aunt and uncle. If he was the only one that didn't impress....

Not Standing left the possibility that he _could_ have been a dragonrider, but Standing and never finding a lifemate hammered home that he wasn't as worthy as his family to partner with a dragon. Even with that underlying fear, however, Kaibren knew that he couldn't waste any more time not Standing, if he hoped to ever Impress.

As he drew up in front of D'kere's office door, his hand paused, formed to place a knock at the door. He could hear through the door the sounds of what he thought was a scuffle. Then a woman's scream.

Alarmed, Kaibren threw open the door. "Weyrlingmaster?"

The scene that met Kaibren's eyes was hard to comprehend. There was the Weyrlingmaster's Second in a fraught embrace with a greenrider. Kaibren's eyes flicked to the way D'kere's hands were gripping the woman's shoulders, shoulders which were partially bare because of her ripped tunic. There was panic and desperation on the woman's face, and clear tear streaks stood out starkly against her cheeks. There was alarm and shock on D'kere's face and visible scratches down his face and neck. The woman's skirts were hiked up around her thighs.

"Oh thank Faranth," Yasmeane sobbed, wrenching herself from D'kere's grasp and throwing herself into Kaibren's arms.

Kaibren's arms went around her automatically, one hand gingerly patting her back. What the feck was going on? "Um, I didn't mean to...." Interrupt?

"Thank Faranth you came when you did." Yasmeane's voice was broken up between sobs. "He was... He... He raped me!"

Kaibren's mouth opened to protest that surely that couldn't be the case, but the disheveled appearance of the Weyrlingmaster's Second's clothing, the flush on his cheeks, and the nail marks on his skin.... They all spoke a different story.

--

Saibra, who had been roused from bed, stood blinking at the three individuals in front of her, her thick robe wrapped tightly around her, the belt tied severely around her waist and somehow making her look like a Weyrwoman even in her pajamas.

"Tell me again," she ordered.

"I was -"

Saibra cut Yasmeane off with a slash of her hand. "Not you." She speared her son with a look. "Kaibren. Tell me again what you saw."

Kaibren swallowed, feeling nervous, even though he was the innocent party. "I was going to D'kere's office to tell him my decision to Stand. When I arrived at the door there were sounds of a struggle on the other side. Someone screaming. And crying. So I opened the door. When I did," he glanced towards D'kere and Yasmeane, "I saw them in the office. She was crying, her shirt was us," he gestured towards his own shoulders, "ripped around the neck. The Weyrlingmaster's Second was gripping her by the shoulders... uh... roughly... and he had the scratches and marks on his face and neck. Her skirts were, um, raised up."

Saibra's expression never changed. "And then?"

"Then Yasmeane threw herself at me and said she'd been raped."

"I was! He raped me! Look!" Yasmeane held up her arms, which showed bruises in the shape of fingers, and then she raised her skirt enough to show bruising on her pale thighs.

"Weyrwoman, I most certainly did not -" D'kere began.

Saibra held her hand up again to silence both parties. She massaged both of her temples as she thought through the situation that they were in. Senior Weyrling accuses Weyrlingmaster's Second of rape. That was a serious accusation against a leader in the Weyr.

"It is late and emotions are high." Saibra said, finally breaking the silence. "Yasmeane, you will go immediately to the infirmary. I will send word. Master Jadirah will give you a physical." Saibra trusted Jadirah to be impartial and tell her truly if this was rape or not. "You will stay the night in the infirmary. You will not go anywhere else in the Weyr. Isaroth is grounded."

The Weyrwoman turned her cool gaze next on D'kere. "Bronzerider, you will return to your weyr for the night and you will stay there until you are sent for in the morning. Kenirath is grounded. I will speak with the Weyrleader and we will get to the bottom of this in the morning."

"I warn you both," Saibra looked first at Yasmeane, "if this is a vicious lie you will be severely punished. Or if this is what it appears," she looked then at D'kere, "you will find yourself on the first wing out of this Weyr."

Yasmeane wiped tears while D'kere stared resolutely at the Weyrwoman.

"Kaibren," Saibra said, finally speaking to her son, "you will return to your cot in the creche. You will not talk to _anyone_ about this. I am sure the Weyrleader will want to question you tomorrow once we've had a chance to discuss things."

Kaibren nodded, staring at the floor and pointedly avoiding looking at Yasmeane or D'kere.

"You are all dismissed." Saibra said, and then added. "Kaibren, escort Yasmeane to the infirmary, on your way to the creche."

"Yes, ma'am," Kaibren murmured, gingerly placing a hand on Yasmeane's elbow as they left the Weyrwoman's office.
