**Flashback**

"You know, you are welcome to stay," Saibra said with an easy smile as
she came around Rogueth's flank, giving the freshly healed scars a
healer's glance once more before patting the bronze lightly.

"Even if I'm not the leader of the Weyrhold project anymore, I find
myself with a certain level of proprietary interest over it. I mean, so
much of the design of making it function for riders...I want to see how
the project pans out, and I'm honored D'hol still chose me as his
second," he said to the Weyrwoman.

"Besides, you have a solid staff, surely you don't need me here."

"I do have a solid staff," she agreed, "but I would never pass the
opportunity for experienced leadership." Many of her staff were now much
younger, what with several of the experienced riders having gone to
Barrier Lake, including Teseada. "Give my regards to D'hol and Kapera,"
she nearly added Saidrene's name to that list, but wisely held her
tongue since she had been sworn to secrecy.

"I certainly will. I'm sure they'll appreciate you dropping in at some
point when you have time to see how it is and what we've accomplished."

And with the pleasantries and thanks over, he mounted Rogueth to go and
head home to Barrier Lake.

-

Saidrene sighed a little forlornly as she pushed food around on her
plate with her fork. She didn't regret her decision to move to Barrier
Lake, but she really missed Alina. She had yet to make a girlfriend at
Barrier Lake that she could really talk to, or even have lunch with for
that matter.

A sudden furry of activity near the Dining Cavern doors caught her
attention, and then several people started gathering around the
entrance. From a distance she could tell that they were greeting
someone, and she could see them clapping someone on the shoulder.

She caught sight of a familiar flash of hair- Kapera. But who was with
the Weyrwoman? Leaning in her seat, to see around the people who were
also craning their necks in interest, Saidrene's mouth fell open when
she finally made out the familiar figure of a well known bronzerider.
K'ran.

**He's back!** she thought in a mixture of excitement and anxiety.

K'ran greeted a number of people as he made his way back in. Everyone
seemed happy to see him, and it was good to see wingmates, and friends,
and all the people he knew. But his eyes were scanning for a particular
person, and when he saw her, he changed the tack of conversation and how
he was angling to shift over in her direction. And finally, he was
there.

"Saidrene, how are you and Ashareth?" he greeted as soon as he was in
range.

A part of Saidrene wished that she had hidden behind others in the
crowd. She wasn't ready to face K'ran, not knowing that she could be
carrying his child. "K'ran," she greeted back, slightly brittle from
nerves, "we're well. You look good. How is Rogueth?"

"He appreciated being fussed over by all of the dragons, for awhile.
His hide is healing well. You're welcome to take your own look, if you
like," he said, giving her a little grin.

"I would love to," Saidrene said with a return of his grin. She had
realized how much she had missed his quiet confidence until he was
standing in front of her.

"I imagine quite a lot's changed here in a few sevendays. Construction
continuing? Everyone settling into the new leadership?"

"Yes, lots of construction, and since D'hol and Kapera become
Weyrleaders, everything has really just fallen into place. It feels more
like a normal Weyr now with a normal chain of command." Saidrene, of
course, hadn't been as involved in the work as she had been before,
mostly because of her morning sickness.

"I'm glad for them," he said. Even if he wished he was in D'hol place.

Saidrene could see that there were other riders waiting to catch a
moment to speak with K'ran. "Why don't I come over later, after you've
had a chance to catch up with everyone?"

"I'd really like that. I wish I had time to catch dinner with you now,
but I seem to be pretty popular."

"It's okay, I'll catch up with you later." Saidrene assured him, knowing
that when she did they would have _plenty_ to talk about.

**Present Day**

Saidrene watched as K'ran walked through the Dining Cavern towards her,
weaving through tables on his way to where they normally sat together
for lunch. **He does cut such a fine figure,** she thought, her eyes
traveling over the bronzerider, her thoughts probably written on her
face. It had been a couple months since his arrival back at Barrier
Lake. A lot had happened since that day and the present.

"Saidrene," K'ran said as he brought over the trays to set them down.
"Sorry if I'm a bit late. A few people wanted to speak with me."

"It's fine, I was just thinking about the day you came back from
Dragonsfall. I was mortified when you saw me and came my way." Saidrene
confessed with a grin as she sprinkled some seasoning over her plate.

"Mortified, really?" he asked.

"Yeah, I was sure 'I'm pregnant' would be written all over my face."
Saidrene said, picking up a crunchy vegetable and munching on it.

"It wasn't, to me. I wasn't able to see it then. I'm so glad you kept
the child, you know."

That really made her smile, the affirmation that K'ran _wanted_ the
baby. "Me too." She reached across the table for his hand.

"You know that regardless of everything else that's happened, I'm still
here for you and them. I promise."

Saidrene's heart swelled as she looked at K'ran. The quietly handsome
bronzerider deserved a better woman than she, the greenider thought,
someone more mature, more intelligent, more studious- the way he was.
Perhaps after the baby was born he would focus more on being a father
than a lover, there was no guarantee there would be a relationship
between them, they were very different after all, regardless, she was
happy to have his attention as long as he would give it.
