Finally, they'd done it. With a triumphant smile, Aviday looked
around at the weyr she'd been assigned, hands on narrow hips.
Situated high on the Weyr's wall, and only accessible by dragonback,
it was small, it didn't have much much space beyond the furniture and
tiny kitchenette, but it was _hers_. Aviday stared at the blank walls
and rough floor. She could decorate it all by herself too, even though
she had no offers how to start doing that. But she'd be able to
figure that out. It was hers! It was her own space. Delighted, she say
on the bed and stretched out, then just as quickly popped back up into
a sit.
Okay, it was also a little quiet when the wind wasn't blowing. She
wasn't sure how to handle that. Quiet wasn't something she was used
to. Faranth knew that the weyrling barracks and the creche hadn't
ever been very quiet. Well, there were things she could do. She had
friends.
It didn't take more than a moment before she and Kobeth were winging
down to another ground level weyr. "Ranni! You home?"
"I'm here," Ranni said around a grunt. The very very pregnant Weyrling
was bent at the knees at an awkward angle as she stretched one arm
down to try and collect a fallen dust rag.
Aviday bounced in and blinked at Ranni's awkward position. " You in
labor or somethin'? You're not are you? Cause.. " Then she saw the
rag. "Oh, Let me get that." She swooped in and picked up the rag, then
handed to her as she looked around. "Wow, yours is much bigger than
mine. Nicer too. Probably cause the baby and everything, right?"
"I suppose," Ranni said, taking the rag with a grateful sigh. "I don't
know if I get to keep it, though. I mean after the baby goes to the
creche I'll go back to just being a junior Weyrling."
"But not to the barracks. Our greens are way too big. You should see
mine. It's super small, but I love it anyway, cause it's mine. I've
never ever had my own space before. And you have to have a dragon to
get to it, so no mama surprises." Aviday grinned. "You'll get to keep
a weyr, I'm sure. Maybe not a big one like this, but still."
"Oh, well... I hadn't even thought about that." Aviday was right,
Sukiith would be too large to fit into the barracks again. That at
least made Ranni feel relieved. She was okay with a smaller weyr, as
long as she was able to have her own space. "I feel the same way. This
is the first time I've had my own room before and it's.... " Ranni
looked around, soaking it in, "Amazing."
"Isn't it?" Aviday grinned. "And you can even have visitors. Won't
that be awesome? No weyrlingmasters telling us to be quiet, or that
it's time to go to bed, or anything like that. And we're can be as
messy as we want to be."
"Oh, I'm sure you'll be messy." Ranni said with a wry grin.
"I get all the cleaning I can stand washing Kobeth. Besides, " her
eyes gleamed, "there's no one but me there to care, so if I want my
clothes in a chair, I can have them there!"
Ranni could not help the smile that Aviday's antics brought out of
her. Aviday was perhaps the only person who could make her smile so
genuinely. "I'll slip into your weyr once a fortnight and clean."
There were some things about a drudges life that she couldn't let go-
cleaning and organizing were just a couple.
Aviday shook her finger at Ranni. "Oh, no you won't! Cause.. I'll just
get the clothes in a big pile and throw them up into the air, and then
have Kobeth send Sukiith the image." She held out her hands, fingers
curled upwards and began to give a fake menacing laugh. "I will be
messy! No one can stop me!"
Ranni laughed, unable to help herself, but the sound was cut short by
a hiss as she quickly pressed a hand against her ribs. "Apparently the
baby thinks you're funny as well."
"Sorry!" Aviday grinned, not feeling a bit sorry at all. She reached
out a hand, then stopped. "Can I...Can I feel what it's like?"
She did not normally like people trying to touch her pregnant belly,
not even R'nar, which everyone wanted to do, but with Aviday... it was
different. "Right here," Ranni directed, taking Aviday's hand and
pressing it against her side, where a hard round baby head or baby
butt was making itself known.
"Oh...wow..." Aviday lightly laid her hand on the mound, eyes
widening. "That feels so weird. You feel that all the time in there?"
She bent to stare at the belly. "Hi! I'm your Aunty Avi. I'm gonna
play with you and tickle your feet and give you food that your mama
says you shouldn't have, like cookies, and pie and sweets."
Ranni looked down, her facial features softening. "She can have
whatever she wants. Make all the decisions I never got to make."
"Well, of course she can. I'm gonna help you spoil her rotten." Aviday
straightened and then carefully gave Ranni a hug. "You're gonna be a
great mama. And I'll help any time you need it. I spent lots of time
in the creche, you know."
"Good, then you can teach her all of the best hiding places and ways
to sneak treats when no one is looking." Ranni grinned.
"Well, yeah. That kinda goes without saying. " Her eyes glinted
merrily. "And I'll teach her how to be messy."
"Do that and I'll give your mother rides up to your weyr whenever she
likes," Ranni shot back.
Aviday's jaw dropped open. "Now, that's just not playing fair.."
"I tricked a bronzerider into having sex and impregnating me so I
wouldn't have to go back to Sunstone," Ranni reminded her. "Do you
think I play fair?" A mischievous gleam warmed her eyes.
Aviday eyed her. "That's evil, you know. Using my mama like that."
"It's okay, you can clutter up my weyr for revenge."
"I will too. " She tilted her head to the side. "How's it going with
R'nar? You've not said. Is he being nice? Are you guys still gonna do
things when you're a senior?"
"I suppose we could do things now. Sukiith is mature, and it's not
like I'll accidentally get pregnant," Ranni shrugged. "He's nice,
maybe that's the problem, he's always nice. He checks on me all the
time, helps with my chores, washes Sukiith...."
"What's wrong with being nice?" Aviday frowned. "A nice guy it's a
good thing. Lots of riders don't care about a girl who's got a child
by them cause it happens so much, at least not like that. Maybe you
should give him a chance, you know? He seems like he really cares
about you. "
Ranni rubbed her hand over her belly, an action that she didn't even
realize she was doing. "He'll tell me what to do, make decisions for
me. I just got my freedom."
"He can't, you know. All you have to do is say no and he can't do
anything about it. It's not like it was at your Hold cause even I know
that girls can make decisions here. I mean, has he tried to do
that? At all? Our tried to take anything away from you?"
"No," she grudgingly admitted before sighing, her shoulders slumping.
"A part of me knows it's ridiculous. R'nar is a gentleman, by the
book, like the kind you read about in stories. On top of that, he's
stupidly good-looking and a bronzerider. People like him don't fall
for people like me." She'd seen evidence of that plenty of times at
the Hold.
"That's kinda stupid, Ranni. Of course they don't if you don't let
them." She plopped into a chair in an awkward sprawl. "I mean,
you're super pretty and it's obvious that he thinks you're special. So
why not let him try?"
Ranni could no more explain her issues with R'nar than Aviday could
her mother. It was one of those complicated issues that despite her
best efforts to solve, Ranni constantly found herself behaving around
R'nar in a way that she did not seem to be able to control. Perhaps it
was just her subconscious way of defending herself. "I don't know.
Different topic, please."
Aviday shrugged. "What's the first thing you're gonna do after the baby's born?"
"Sleep on my stomach," Ranni said in a wistful tone.
"What?" Aviday stared. "You can't do that?"
"No," she said in a huff. "It's like... Imagine trying to sleep on a boulder."
"I'm never ever having a baby." Aviday shuddered, remembering Ranni's
sickness, her awkwardness once she started to get large, and now,
not being able to sleep like you wanted to? It was way too much. "As
soon as I get a guy who likes me, I'm going on the teas. "
"Yes, well, every old biddy in the Weyr has assured me, numerous
times, that it is 'worth it'. I'll let you know once the baby is
born."
"Nope. Not me. Not ever. " Aviday shook her head. "I like sleeping too much. "
"Trust me, after this one, I'll never forget to take my teas. Ever."
"Me either!" Aviday responded fervently.
