Dunrik looked up from his unpacking at the knock on his door. "Rikol,
see who that is, please."
"Yes, father." Rikol left behind his own crate, rose and walked to the
door of the small apartment that had been built on next to the forge.
It was nice and simple, adequate for their needs, and more over,
quiet. He opened the door and smiled at Jayzine." Headwoman...please,
come in. Excuse our mess, we're unpacking.
Dunrik looked up, laying aside a large carved box and straightened.
"Headwoman. This is a surprise."
"Good evening Dunrik," she nodded to the younger man. "Do you need any
help with this?"
"Oh, no ma'am." Rikol answered. "We couldn't ask you to help. You're very busy."
Dunrik, patted his son lightly on the shoulder, but turned to Jayzine.
"It's appreciated, Headwoman, but my boy's right. There's no need for
you to trouble yourself after you've been working hard all day." He
offered her a chair. "Please, have a seat and I'll get you a drink."
She smiled and sat where he'd indicated. "Why thank you very much.
It's fairly rare for someone to turn down my help."
"You're most welcome, Headwoman. I figure that you do enough during
the day without having to help us with personal matters." He moved to
pour her a cup of juice, chilled from cold water collected from the
nearby river. He handed it to you. "Now you just relax. Did you have
need of me? What can I help you with this evening?" Rikol, knowing
well to not interrupt adult conversation, return to unpacking his
crate, moving with steady purpose.
"Actually I was wondering if you knew the game of chess. " she said.
He blinked in surprise. "Why, yes, Headwoman I do. My wife and I used
to play when we were first married. Of course, I've had little time or
partners to play chess with for the past few turns. Rikol doesn't seem
to care much for the game."
Rikol looked up, smiled in agreement, then continued unpacking his belongings.
She nodded and her eyes smiled. "I have a very fine set, quartz and
obsidian. Master Bilpen was kind enough to make me a new board for it
and I'm wanting to try it out later if you'd like to come by my
office.
He rubbed his chin, then nodded. "I think that would be alright. I'm
not very good, mind you. I'm out of practice."
"I'd enjoy the company to pass the evening in a nice game. I'm happy
to teach you what I know," she offered.
Dunrik nodded. "I'd like that. I don't get much time to really relax
with all the work that's piled up. A man needs a break now and then.
When would you like to play?"
"Well, I know you need to get settled in, Perhaps tomorrow evening
after dinner?" She smiled and stepped back toward the door way.
"Alright." A smile spread on his face. "It's a date..." He paused,
"Well, I mean, not a date, but, uh..." He scratched the back of his
head, a flush spreading over his cheeks. "I'll be there."
She half smiled and turned her eyes down as she turned to leave. "I'll
expect you then tomorrow," she said and blushed a little herself.
