Saidrene

Saidrene couldn't seem to stop the tears that coated her cheeks,
which only served to frustrate her more as she wiped them with stiff
jerks of her hands. She had never truly been able to say goodbye to
J'ackt before, because she loved him, and the thought of being without
him was nearly unbearable, but she also could no longer live with the
thought of just being a friendly acquaintance in his life. He had made
his decision with Alina, and now the three of them had to live with
those consequences.

A shrill scream from right outside her temporary weyr made her jump. A
hand flew to her throat. A mating flight? In the scant few days she
had been at Barrier Lake there really had not been any flights. There
was still a limited number of dragonriders and everyone was incredibly
focused on the work that needed to be done around the Weyrhold.

Her cheeks flagged with color when she realized that it was Ashareth.
Throwing open the door to her small space, she groaned when she saw
her green's lithe form snatching up a herdbeast. **Why today of all
days?** she pleaded with Ashareth as she stumbled in the direction of
the newly constructed feeding pens.

The green did not answer because at the moment she was not the flirty,
playful friend that Saidrene was familiar with, in that moment,
Ashareth was a feral creature, driven and fueled by the lust that her
body demanded be slaked. Even as she curled her hands over the
railings of the feeding pens and watched her dragon eat, Saidrene
heard the answering call of male dragons.

K'lvin had been in the dragon infirmary, helping supervise some of the
construction workers as they debated on how to make the areas in the
infirmary large enough to house dragons, when the challenging bugle of
the green rang out. He hadn't even had a moment to think about it
before his feet were carrying him in the direction of the pens, his
sleeves rolled up to his elbows as he watched Xmrenth fly overhead and
settle to wait for the green to finish feeding.

About to throw the straps over Zith's neck and shoulders, he was
nearly flung back as the bronze lifted his head and bugled. **What the
feck are you...**

}: Ashareth rises! I chase! :{ The big bronze shook off the loose
straps and prepared to leap into the air towards where he saw other
males gathering.

**Wait, no! You're not going to chase. We're leaving, right now.
She doesn't want us!**

}: I chase! I still catch her again!:{ Ignoring the mental cues going
at him, Zith joined the other males, shouldering in to peer at
Ashareth with increasing lust.

K'ran was having a meeting with a Master Technician to talk about the
state of wiring for the new weyrs for the chromatic riders when he
felt a sudden surge of heat echo through his body.

}:_She_ rises,:{ Rogueth informed K'ran, already winging to the
feeding pens and taking down a wherry to blood.

**Who -** he thought, but he got the impression as soon as he thought
it, from a strange double-vision glimpse of pale green wings
stretching and vivid dark hair spreading out and around.

**Saidrene,** he realized. **Rogueth, wait - **

}:I chase,:{ the bronze informed again as he sunk his teeth and
drained the blood.

'I'm sorry, the dragons call, I have to go," he said, pushing back
from his desk and getting up to head over with some difficulty.

Ashareth hissed at the waiting males as she tossed her herdbeast aside
and leaped abruptly out of the pens without warning. Her hide itched
and burned and the only thing that felt good was the wind blasting
against her as she ascended quickly through the skies. On the ground,
Saidrene's last thought was that she did not even know where the
flight rooms were, but that quickly became of little concern as she
completely gave herself over to her dragon's flight.

There were a surprising number of bronzes in flight after Ashareth.
Rogueth snarled at them. He had flown this green last time. He would
fly her again. He needed to catch and claim her. The rivals were
wrong. Unworthy of her. He bugled and sent her that message in
emotional impressions and images of them twining.

Xmrenth soared passed a smaller blue dragon as the pack jostled for
position in the air behind Ashareth. The green had not yet even looked
behind her to see which males were chasing so intent was she on flying
and undulating with the wind.

Zith's focus was intent on Ashareth; he knew her and had known her all
of their lives. She had been close to him, he knew how she flew, and
the emotions from his rider sung to him. He _wanted_ her.

As J'ackt joined the other men gathered around Saidrene, his jaw set,
but he was resigned. He should have left by now, but the desire for
her still remained. He ignored the other riders, though he knew some
of them.

Rogueth's desire to catch Ashareth was hot and burning. He had overseen her flying in Threadfall and in wing drill, he knew she was sneaky, and agile, and a good flyer. But he had caught gold! He too was sneaky and agile and a stunning male to choose. He remembered catching this green. And he knew his rider cared for hers, even though there was reluctance in his feelings outside the flight. Maybe winning would resolve that issue.

Saidrene weaved closer to K'ran in the mix of men as Ashareth dove past Rogueth, nearly brushing wingtips with him as she did. Now that she was looking at the pack of males, Ashareth could not deny that it was the best pack that had ever chased after her before. Her rider's emotions were a confusing mix, simultaneously wanting more than one of the bronzeriders. At least two of the bronzes had flown her and her rider before. Ashareth snorted and dove into the cloud cover. If a male wanted her, he would have to catch her, she decided.

Totally enmeshed with Zith, J'ackt wove through the chasing males, never allowing himself to fall out of Saidrene's line of sight. All of his instincts wanted the young woman/dragon, but emotional pull was there also; he'd claimed her before, and he was determined to again. Zith, knowing Ashareth well, adjusted his flight path, skimming just under the clouds to wait until she emerged. He saw several others dive into the clouds and gave an inward chortle at their folly. She'd lose them in those mists easily.

Rogueth went high above the clouds, looking down into them for a gleaming green blur. He saw motion and the way the cloud cover eddied and swirled as dragons passed through it. Tail-tips, or the leading edge of wings, were visible here and there. But none of them belonged to the green he sought. Unless - there, was that her? There was a particular area of heavy motion. He took a chance and dove down, encountering a blue and brown flying close together. But just ahead of them, there she was! Snarling, he was seeking to make his way through to get her. If he could just be free of their wings... he lunged for a space and grabbed outwards.

Ashareth careened through the skies. She could feel the last reserves of her energy beginning to fade as her wings were beginning to feel warm and achy. She made to look over her shoulder to see which males were left but suddenly talons were clutching her, and although she tried to pull away, a strong bronze neck was wrapping its way around hers.

On the ground, Saidrene similarly found herself entangled in familiar arms, being kissed by familiar lips.
