Leaving Dolphin Cove was the first big decision that Saidrene had ever
made in her life. Truth be told, she was not sure she could have made
it without K'ran's invitation and then being snubbed from J'ackt and
Alina's special little celebration of their weyrmating. That still cut
her to the quick. She had gone from being an important person in
J'ackt's life, and Alina's best friend, to someone they both had
forgotten about.
Going to Dragonsfall was never an option. She loved her mother but the
idea of being in the same Weyr as Saibra was an unbearable one.
Saidrene loved her mother better if it was from a distance where she
could not judge the other woman's decisions or behavior. Barrier Lake
seemed like the perfect solution. She could go there and make new
friendships, new relationships, and hone her dragonhealer crafting
skills.
Still, the whole morning while she packing Ashareth, her fingers had
trembled and her stomach had been knotted with nerves. What if she
left Dolphin Cove and immediately hated it? What if she got homesick
and wanted to leave? There would be no reversing the decision, at
least not for a Turn. She did not want to be known as an immature
baby.
Besides, it wasn't as if she didn't know anyone at Barrier Lake. K'ran
was there, her lips curved into a grin, she knew him well enough. She
also knew D'hol and F'lin, and she had worked with K'lvin in the
dragon infirmary at Dolphin Cove on more than one occasion. But there
was no replacing Alina. Losing her only girlfriend was hard to
swallow, but if she were honest, she had lost her anyway when she had
weyrmated to J'ackt.
"You all settled?" Saidrene asked Ashareth as the green settled into
the wallow that would be her new weyrcouch until more permanent weyr
spaces were available.
}:Yes, I am fine, and besides, I see Xmrenth. I will go sun with
him.:{ The green's eyes whirled with interest, happy to see so many
bronzes at the Weyrhold.
**You do that,** Saidrene chuckled as she left the temporary weyr. The
Weyrhold was charming, she thought, having been constructed so close
to the lake, and she liked the size of it. It was not too big and not
too small.
Lusilk had pointed out where she could find D'hol's office and she
knocked on the open door when she arrived. "Reporting for duty, sir,"
she smiled.
D'hol looked up and arched a brow. "Saidrene. So my eyes weren't
deceiving me when I got your transfer hides." He waved her in. "Come
in."
"That's right. I've been focusing a lot on my craft and so I thought
why not put it to good use?" Saidrene said as she took the seat across
from D'hol and tossed her braid over her shoulder. She knew that some
dragonriders always muttered under their breath in fear of having
D'hol as their Wingleader but she had always experienced him to be
straightforward and fair, she preferred that to poor leaders who could
not control their wingriders.
He nodded. "You'll put it to good use here. You do understand that
rest days are going to be much fewer for at least a turn, don't you?
We're still building, so even when you aren't in the infirmary, you'll
be put to use elsewhere. You'll learn many more skills and go to bed
tired. Do you think you'll be able to handle that?"
She thought of the reasons she had left Dolphin Cove. "That sounds
perfect. I want to be busy."
D'hol's brow twitched upwards, but he didn't ask. "You will be. And
we'll be flying Thread with Dragonsfall until we're full strength." He
leaned backwards in his chair. "You've not been assigned to a wing
yet, so I'll discuss that with K'ran this afternoon. Until then,
you'll need to contact Jayzine to get your housing and settle in.
After that, you'll be working with K'lvin to help set up the dragon
infirmary."
"If it can be helped, I would rather not be in K'ran's wing, although
I understand if the balancing of numbers requires it." Saidrene
figured K'ran would also probably be on board with that decision as
well, but she wasn't sure how the decision was working around Barrier
Lake.
"Very well. I'll put you in my wing. Since the Queens wing hasn't been
formed yet, it's the only other options. I run a tight wing, Saidrene
and I expect the best out of you. As will Timassa. She's come as my
wingthird and handles discipline unless I need to. You'll report for
drills first thing in the morning until lunch. After drills, you'll be
expected to work with K'lvin for duties there for the remainder of the
day. I'm afraid this will limit any personal time."
A busy day with little downtime to get homesick? That seemed like the
perfect plan to Saidrene and she smiled as she nodded at being put
into D'hol's wing. She hoped it wouldn't be awkward having J'ackt's
aunt as her wingthird but some things couldn't be avoided. "I work
hard, I won't let you down, sir."
"No, you won't." His smile was brief. "Alright then." He rose and
offered his hand. "I'll see you in the morning."
There was an excited glint in her hazel eyes that came with youth and
a new adventure. "Yes, sir," she said as she stood and shook his hand.
