Lusilk

Lusilk tucked Silgan into the bed, a gentle smile on her face for the
small boy. He looked up at her, eyes sleepy. "Mama?" It was a soft
whisper. "Are we gonna stay here?"

"Yes, lad. As long as we can."

"Is the bad man still coming?"

"Not here." She bent to kiss his cheek, but a rustle of leathery wings
stopped her. Her head jerked up to see the small brown firelizard
staring at her, a carefully rolled hide clutched in his fingers. She
bit back a curse. Shaffit, she'd told him that she'd retired! She was
done! She snatched the hide from the firelizard with a snarl.

Silgan saw the firelizard; he knew what it meant and large eyes grew
saddened. "You're going to have to leave again, aren't you?"

She relaxed, fixing her angered expression before facing her son. "I'm
sorry, Silgan. I know you don't like it. I'm trying."

"I know." The voice was sad. "Will I be staying with the other
children this time?" His voice sounded hopeful and it nearly broke her
heart to hear it.

"Yes, I'll arrange it."

"For how long?"

Her eyes closed. "You know I never know. I'll try not to be too long."
She opened the missive. It was short. "Come." **Come,** she thought.
**What am I a canine?** Usually there was more to the message from
this particular person. There was definitely a lesson to be taught
here, owed debt or not. "I'll go speak to Jayzine, Silgan. I'll try to
be back as soon as I can, alright? Remember..."

"I know, mama. No talking."

She truly wished that she could allow him to be a regular child, a
normal child. She looked at the firelizard. "Message received, now go
back before you're noticed." She turned to Silgan. "I love you. I'll
go speak to Jayzine right now."

She kissed his brow, rose, and then hurried to Jayzine's rooms,
knocking lightly on the door.
