Dunrik looked up at the sound of a cart stopping at the forge, wiped
his hands. And featured for his son to remove the bar of metal from
the forge. "Hold off on that for right now. Sounds like we have some
new material coming in." The former mine had proven to be a treasure
trove of discarded, but still useful metal that could be reclaimed;
even in small amounts.

"Master Dunrik," said the large burly man that had arrived with the
cart, removing his hat to slap it across one leg and send dust flying
while he wiped the sweat of his brow with the sleeve of his other arm.
"I believe we have something that will make you a very happy man,"
Bylen gestured to the cart with a tip of his head.

Dunrik peered over the side of the cart, eyeing the metal with a
critical eye. Much of it had some rust, but the large shipment was
welcome, especially since he was expecting a new journeyman to arrive
soon to assist him in the reclamation. "Looks good, Bylen. Did you
bring that new girl with you by any chance? The headwoman has her
logging materials from the mine. "

Oh, the girl! Bylen crammed his hat back on his head and spun around,
remembering she had ridden with him, and a man was supposed to help a
lady down, wasn't he? Only, he surveyed the empty seat, where had she
gone? "Well, she was here a second ago."

"I'm back here." Lusilk's melodic voice was hidden by the pile of
metal. "There's quite a few hefty chunks that we can start unloading
now if you like.

Bylen looked visibly relieved. "There she is," he didn't want to face
the Headwoman if something happened to one of her worker's while under
his watch. The minercrafter moved around to the back of the cart and
unlatched the tailgate so they could begin sliding the larger pieces
off.

Dunrik stepped forward, ready to send Lusilk back to simply jot notes
down, but she stepped in just as quickly to pick up her own
piece.Eyeing the men, she lifted a heavy bar of metal, her chin
raised, and carried it into the forge.

Dunrik turned to Bylen with an arched brow. "Weyrbred you think?"

"Nah, those weyrbred women love bossing men about. I'm betting a
farmer's daughter, maybe, used to manual labor." Bylen said as he
watched Lusilk pick up the piece of metal. He wasn't the type of man
to jump in and tell a woman what to do, if she wanted to wake up the
next day unable to walk from throwing out her fool back, then that was
on her, he thought.

"Well, it's helpful. We need people like her willing to carry a load
or two. If she's strong enough, I won't complain." Dunrik clapped the
man on his back and hefted a much heavier piece onto his shoulder.
"Do you think we'll end up getting more scrap through the week? I've a
fair amount of orders and the few apprentices I have from that village
can't help with all of it until the journeymen arrive. Smithcraft Hall
needs to send a few more sturdy lads our way. "

"I am hopeful that there will be more," Bylen said as he bent to lift
a metal beam onto his shoulder. "We are still digging through the
discarded bits for usable pieces and then we're adding new tunnels in
the mines to see what else we can find."

"Jayzine says that she's expecting another technician and two more
smiths within the week. Three more young boys from the village have
decided to apprentice, but they're not sure which craft." Lusilk
responded as she came out, jotting notes on a piece of hide as she
glanced at what they carried. "Wingleader D'hol told her that he and
K'ran are specifically requesting riders with craft experience to help
as well."

"You're well informed. " Dunrik replied as he carried his load into
the forge, bringing out his son to assist with the unloading. The
young man looked with interest at Lusilk for only a moment before
hurrying to his task.

"I pay attention." Lusilk tried another piece of metal, found it was
too heavy and elected for a smaller, more manageable set of old
tools. "Bylen, she has your new bed ready by the way. "

"Thank Faranth," Bylen said, depositing his load and turning back
toward the cart. "My feet hung off the other one." The miner was
considerably tall and broad of shoulder.

She still had a pallet, but it didn't bother her. She was used to
sleeping rough. "She'll want to see you after this load, though.
Something about the fans in the new hatching grounds." She carried in
the old tools and came back out, writing more notes.

Dunrik frowned. "Those fans should be fine. They're built strong. "
He turned to Bylen. "Something happen? Did those technicians bend my
blades?"

Bylen held up his hands. "Beats me, I delivered them without a scratch
on them." He had stayed and watched the technicians work for a bit,
interested in their tools and such, although his area of expertise was
more along the lines of blowing things up than putting things
together.

Never one to curse, Dunrik's sigh spoke enough of his feelings.
"Well, I can't spare the time to build new ones. Not right now."

Lusilk watched the two men with interest as they spoke, absorbing
everything. Each gesture, each inflection was memorized. It was
habit and she scarcely realized that she was doing so.

"Well, I had better get this cart back. At the moment every cart we
have is a precious commodity since so many things are being ferried
about." Bylen looked over at Lusilk. "You riding back with me?"

"Aye, I know. It's my cart." Dunrik offered a grin.
"Jayzine...requisitioned it with my permission. Just take care of my
runners." He offered his hand to Bylen. "I'll see you the next trip."

Lusilk nodded, lifting herself up into the cart and settling herself
as she waited.

Bylen shook the smith's hand. "I will, they are a fine pair." He said,
speaking of the runners. The minercrafter turned with the intention of
offering his hand to Lusilk to help her into the wagon, but there she
was, perched on the buckboard ready to go. **Independent broad, she
is,** he thought with amusement as he stepped up into the wagon and
took the reins into his hands. "Well, let's go see what Task Master
Jayzine has for us next," he said, shooting a grin at his riding
companion.

"More work." Lusilk replied, finishing her notes without a glance up.
