Bilpen

Bilpen

"Rikol, start unloading some of the gear, please." Dunrik's voice was
soft but resonant in the empty forge. As his young son began unloading
some of the lightest gear, he studied the area, only the fire pit and
hood stating the potential purpose of the three-walled room. The other
wall was half-open to the outside, he noticed with approval, allowing
for proper ventilation. Even in the winter, the heat from the forge
would be sufficient for work. Mentally, he began arranging the area,
placing the forge there, his tools there... It was very suitable.

Bilpen walked down the hill from where he'd camped on the side of the
new location to greet some of the new arrivals. "Hello there," he
called toward the smithy. "Welcome to Barrier Lake," he smiled as he
strode forward.

Dunrik stepped out at the call, saw the man approaching, and walked
forward, offering his hand. "Thank you. I'm Master Smith Dunrik, the
lad inside is my son and apprentice, Rikol." His gaze flicked over the
knots in the man's shoulder. "Master Bilpen, correct?"

"Very good to meet you Master Dunrik," Bilpen gave a wide grin. His
dark eyes crinkled with good humor. "I'm glad you've come. I have
several apprentices moving the found metal to the side of the smithy
for you. The Miners are in need of awls on a regular basis if you can
make that your first priority." He looked around the very sparse
building. "Once you get settled in of course," he smiled.

"Thank you, and the same to you as well." Dunrik nodded. "It'll take
me at least the rest of the day and tomorrow to get the place in order
and in working condition. I'll need a good supply of bone, wood, and
charcoal for the forge if you can direct me to it. I brought my own
wagon and two solid draft runners, so I'll not put anyone else out.
I'd prefer to stable them close by if possible. If you can give me a
list of what's needed as a priority, then I'll get started on those
items first." He glanced around. "Are we the first so far then?"

Bilpen nodded at each point and then grinned. "Not at all, there is a
small camp just up the hill there. See the tents?" He pointed up the
hill about half a mile. "We're making these buildings habitable," he
pointed over his shoulder at the small collection of buildings nearby.
"We'll move in there once they're ready." He pulled out a scrap of
hide and made a few notes. "Why don't you and your son come up when
you're hungry. My wife is cooking for the camp at the moment. We'll
feed you."

Dunrik nodded. "Rikol and I can sleep in the forge for now until
housing is ready for us. It's serviceable enough, and we'll assist
with building as much as we can." He liked over at the group of tents
and noticed the line of smoke. "Does your wife need any pots? We have
a fair few with us that we brought. And my runners can be used for any
hauling as long as they're treated proper."

"Good to know," Bilpen nodded. "She was complaining that the soup pot
she has isn't big enough for the number of mouths she has to feed
right now."

Dunrik moved to the back of his wagon, waving the man over. He moved
a large crate, the obvious weight of it seeming light in his grip.
Below where the crate had been settled was a massive iron pot. "Would
this be more to her liking? I was planning on giving it to the kitchen
after it was built. It's much too large for just Rikon and myself.
I'd rather it be used for its original purpose than being stored or
used as a planter. "

"Perfect," Bilpen clapped Dunrik on the shoulder. "She'll be thrilled
and I'm certain she'll be a part of the kitchens when they are built.
"Well, I should let you get settled," he said and picked up the huge
pot in both arms. "There will be lots of bread and stew at sunset.
See you there,"

"Thank you, Bilpen. Rikol and I will be there as soon as we get
unloaded." Dunrik took the heavy blow on his shoulder without
complaint or a twitch.

"Tell your wife to put aside any pots or gear that she might need
repaired and I'll work on those as well."

"Aye," Bilpen chuckled. "I'll do that, and you think about nails.
We'll need lots of them."
