Talking as Friends

Writers: Cali, Shelly
Date Posted: 29th March 2006

Characters: Corvera, S'rak
Description: S'rak goes to Corvera to sort out his feelings on J'nus's promotion.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 16 of Turn 3
Notes: Mentioned: J'nus, D'wrayt

S'rak knocked on Corvera's door. Radeth had said she was in her weyr,
and he needed to talk to someone. He was always one to need a sounding
board to work things out and back at Far Island he had always had
Torinica, or J'nto... or Corvera.

Corvera opened the door and smiled brightly to find S'rak on her
doorstep - without wine in his hands. After their last encounter, she
wasn't too keen on alcohol in general and was grateful to see that this
would be a friendly visit. "S'rak - come in!"

"Thanks, beautiful." he said relieved. He stepped inside and gave
Corvera a friendly hug, "Do you have a few minutes to talk, as
friends?"

Corvera nodded affirmatively. "A few, yes. Come in." She gestured
inside to her couch. "What would you like to talk about?"

"Have you gotten to know D'wrayt very well yet?" S'rak asked as he sat
down, "More to the point his decision making capabilities?"

She regarded him a little suspiciously. "I bit, but I haven't yet
formed a distinct impression of him..."

"Well I don't understand the man at all." he sighed, "I just came from
a very uncomfortable meeting with J'nus and Kenza where J'nus informed
me that D'wrayt had just chosen him as the new Cyan Wingleader."

"Well..." Corvera knew she was getting into gray area with this
conversation. "You're new to the weyr, still, and J'nus has been here
for many turns now..." She tried to be as supportive as she could.

S'rak interrupted, "But he was just a wingrider! I know I'm new to the
weyr, and if he had appointed another wingsecond I would have been fine
with that. I have a proven _Wingleader_ record, and when I asked J'nus
what sort of experience _he_ had, he gave me some snap reply like
_enough_. You know what that means, it means _none_, maybe a few
wingsecond fill in days, or _playing_ wingleader during drills."

"S'rak..." Corvera chided him. "The decision was made with
consideration and thought; whatever his reasons, the Weyrleader had his
reasons for his choice and I think you should respect them."

He sighed and looked over at his friend, "I guess you're right." and
then added, "And I _hope_ the decision was made with thought and
consideration. If D'wrayt just gave him the position because they
were friends or something... well, I guess we'll find out at the next
threadfall either way."

"Indeed we will." The Weyrwoman wasn't entirely comfortable talking
about this subject and hopped that this would be the end of it. She
wasn't yet used to having to compromise between an old friend and her
Weyrleader.

S'rak took Corvera's hand and gave it a squeeze. He wasn't completely
mollified, but his talk with her had calmed him somewhat. "Thank you
for listening to me ramble away. Could I maybe interest you in a bit
of a walk, maybe down towards the kitchens? I bet they have a special
stock of sweets stored away for Weyrwomen and ousted Wingleader late
night snacks!"

Corvera rose eagerly - S'rak knew she had a secret love for sweetrolls
and cookies, especially at night. "You don't have to ask me twice." She
giggled.

He loved her smiles and her laughs even more; they were infectious,
and he couldn't help but grin at her as they walked towards the door.
He had started to wonder if he was right to come to this Weyr, it was
certainly not what he had been expecting, but maybe with Corvera here
with him it would all work out... It was at least worth a try.
