Once again it was their turn to host the Weyr Conclave so Cyradis had
worked tirelessly with Chaysea to make sure everything was prepared for
two days of meetings and feast that night. She was smiling and
standing at the entrance to the Council Chambers as their guests began
to arrive.
"Thank Faranth Dolphin Cove is hosting this time," M'stan said, a smile
creasing his weather-worn face as he arrived, escorting his Weyrwoman,
Leriyah. "The sunshine and warm weather are far more agreeable than the
frigid cold at Dragonsfall."
Leriyah gave her Weyrleader a sharp elbow in the ribs as she spotted
Dragonsfall's Weyrleaders approaching as well.
"Ouch," M'stan hissed, winking at Cyradis, "it's not as if I was insulting
them personally."
Leriyah rolled her eyes and took Cyradis' hands. "It's good to see you,
Cyradis."
Chioneth was pleased to be out of Dragonsfall, since she'd been cooped up
there during her time on the Sands, and her eyes whirled quickly as she
regarded the bronzes there.
**Behave yourself,** Saibra cautioned her lifemate as she dismounted,
brushed her skirt down her legs, and then turned to walk in with K'reyel.
K'reyel walked forward to greet his brother's weyrmate, although she was
here today in her capacity as Weyrwoman and host. "It's good to see you
today."
Cyradis greeted each of them in turn with a smile and a special word.
Saibra and Leriya she hugged, their Weyrleaders she saluted with a
kiss on the cheek. K'reyel did get an extra warm squeeze of his hands.
"Good to see you too."
S'shin alighted and then escorted his own Weyrwoman to greet Cyradis
and N'vanik. He lifted his face to the warmth of the sun with a smile.
He felt much the same as M'stan about the weather. Rising Moons wasn't
as cold as Dragonsfall, but it certainly wasn't tropical like Dolphin
Cove or Vista Point.
"Weyrwoman Cyradis, so good to see you again," Raelis said. "I hope
Panitath is in good health. She looks wonderful as always."
Daikanth announced her arrival and she spiraled down, Galardja had to
admit Dolphin Cove was a lovely sight from the air.
Casaranth and Kalmath arrived from Dream's End. The pair headed into
the Council rooms. Yvonnes warmly greeted Saibra and Cyradis.
Meanwhile H'lib was very cool to N'vanik, and went out of his way to
be polite to other Weyrleaders.
K'ran walked in and greeted his former peers, feeling a little bit
uncomfortable to be invited to the gathering when River Bluff no
longer existed, but determined to be as polite as possible.
After all the leaders had arrived and seated themselves. S'shin took
his Weyrwoman's hand and looked around the table. "I know I've spoken
with some of you and we've all come to a very similar conclusion. The
current territories are too big. Our Weyrs are too small to hold
enough dragons and our queens are still laying large clutches. We must
replace Riverbluff."
Cyradis nodded. She'd seen the injuries climbing and her own
Weyrdragonhealer had expressed his concerns with them. "It is
necessary to send out teams to find a good location somewhere in what
was formerly Riverbluff Territory." She looked over at Saibra and
K'reyel for confirmation
Saibra nodded. "We've casually flown over some of the territory that
Dragonsfall took over when River Bluff collapsed. There are some
interesting location options, but we would need more dedicated search
teams to really decide on a new place." The Dragonsfall Weyrwoman
looked to the other leaders for their support.
"Far Island would like to return to its normal territory," M'stan
admitted. "We would offer crafters or searchers, whatever is necessary
to help."
"Once a location's been found, we'll need to send over crafters to
manage the effort of building. And we'll need to send at least a few
dragonriders to be responsible for the effort," H'lib said.
"Perhaps those with craft training, or retired riders. At least at
first," Yvonnes added.
T'miel of Vista Point looked over at K'ran. "It would be a good symbol
to have the head dragonrider be the former Weyrleader."
Though K'ran had only been at River Bluff for a Turn before its
destruction, he still felt responsible for it, so he said, "I would be
willing to assist in that, if my Weyrleaders can spare me." He rather
hoped N'vanik and Cyradis would.
"If you want to lead this effort, we'll do everything we can to
support you," N'vanik said. He'd hoped K'ran and the others would be
able to return to River Bluff someday, but a new Weyr might be what
they needed. A fresh start, a place that wasn't haunted with terrible
memories.
"Perhaps we should select a retired goldrider to assist you. We won't
be able to install a breeding queen until there are suitable Hatching
Grounds," Galardja said.
"Yes," Cyradis agreed with N'vanik nodding at K'ran. "Also I'd like to
nominate my 'second Kapera as suitable Candidate once the Hatching
sands are established. Perhaps three mature golds would be good? First
to rise becomes Senior?"
Saibra glanced at K'reyel. "We would also like to send Teseada. She's
been a 'second here at Dragonsfall for a few Turns now, and she's
weathered having a different senior Weyrwoman more than once," her
lips twisted into a wry grin.
Leriyah said nothing, she was quite happy with the goldriders that she
had at Far Island, and had no wish to send away one just to have to
train up another.
"It would be a good symbol to have the former River Bluff leader
working on the building," Yvonnes agreed. "Let me speak with my
juniors and see if one wishes to go as a candidate for the position,"
she added.
K'ran appreciated N'vanik and Cyradis' show of support. He had worried
they would think his duties at Dolphin Cove too essential.
S'shin nodded in agreement especially with the support K'ran had from
his current Weyrleaders. "Then I think we're agreed on the start. We
should all send what search teams are responsible for that area to
find possible locations and then get evaluations from the appropriate
crafts. Once a selection is made K'ran will be responsible for getting
it ready for mature wings and hatching sands built for the Queens to
be sent. First gold to rise will become Weyrwoman and her flight
winner Weyrleader of the new Weyr." He looked around the table and saw
agreement in almost all their faces. "Any other business?"
**Kapera?!?** Galardja pressed her lips together to keep back a
comment. No one else seemed to have an issue with putting forth a
failed Weyrwoman as a candidate to lead the new Weyr. And Teseada? She
was hardly more than a girl. Did they want this new Weyr to succeed or
not? Perhaps she should look in to finding a _real_ candidate for
Senior Weyrwoman.
"Since we're all here, should we discuss current Wing strength and
possible transfers?" N'vanik suggested.
The conversation carried between the gathered leaders, the different
Weyrs putting forth suggestions for preliminary Wings and dragonriders
to be the first wave of helpers in the project. They also discussed
the number of transfers that they would be able to send from each of
the Southern Weyrs and what the time frame of those arrivals would be
to map out how long it would take to feasibly fill the new Weyr. All
dependent on the location chosen by the search teams and local
available resources, of course.
Throughout the meeting, Saibra couldn't help but glance at K'ran,
taking in his demeanor and thinking how much differently this Weyr
conclave was for him than the last had been. The last conclave had
seen the end of River Bluff, and the end of his Weyrleadership, and
now here he was, sitting on the cusp of something new. He deserved it,
as did all of the River Bluff refugees.
