*******

After leaving K'ran's office, Saidrene stormed to her weyr, threw all
of her flight gear onto the floor, ripped off Ashareth's straps and
snatched up her bag of fresh clothes. She'd accepted the possibility
of facing repercussions when she'd gone to K'ran's weyr, but after the
night they'd spent together, a part of her had really thought that
she'd gotten away with it- "Yeah, right."

She had hoped to go by Alina's to tell her how drills had went but by
the time she took a good scrub in the bathing pools and gotten a bite
to eat, it was time to go on her sweepriding duties. Once those were
over, she'd grabbed dinner and then headed off for her night watch
duty.

**Night watch duties and sweep? He could have just came out and said
that he didn't want me coming back to his weyr ever again,** she
thought darkly as she waved off the rider who'd been on the shift
before her and took his seat. She propped her booted feet against the
stone wall of the watch while Ashareth settled into the watch dragon's
ledge.

Saidrene huffed out a sigh and crossed her arms over her chest, trying
to get comfortable for the long night ahead.

There was one interesting thing that happened that first candlemark of
watch. A member of the weyrlingstaff, a young brownrider from
Riyanth's last clutch who was a Turn too young to join the fighting
Wings, arrived back at the weyr late. Specifically, he arrived just at
the time of curfew.

}:Asharath, hello,:{ brown Vedrath greeted cheerily, unaware of
N'kalt's desire for him to keep silent to the watchdragon until it was
too late.

Saidrene sat up in her chair a bit as she watched Vedrath land. She
wondered what he had been doing out so late.

}:Greetings Vedrath,:{ the green replied in turn as Saidrene charted down
the dragon's entrance to the Weyr along with the candlemark time.

Now that curfew was settling in, there would be very few dragons coming
and going. Riders who were not bound by curfew would be enjoying their
nightly activities. **Sleeping or enjoying their weyrmate,** she humphed
reclining back in the hard wooden chair again as she propped her feet up.
She tilted her head back and gazed up at the stars which were lightly
visible through the sparse cloud cover. It was going to be a long night.

}:How is it here at the Weyr? My rider's cothold is _very_ boring,:{ the
young brown complained.

"Shhhh..." N'kalt whispered aloud to Vedrath. **We're gonna get in
trouble,** he added mentally. But the damage was done. He could just hope
Saidrene hadn't noticed it was technically past curfew...

And then it was quiet a little longer. Maybe another half-candlemark, or
so. But then a bronze dragon emerged from /between/, swooped above the
Weyr for a moment, as though taking stock, and then dropped down to by
Ashareth. Rogueth leaned over to touch noses with the green as his rider
slid off. He was showing none of the reluctance or irritation his rider
had earlier.

The arrival of the bronze had startled Saidrene, and she quickly pulled
her feet down and sat up straighter in her chair. Taking the clipboard,
Saidrene jotted down K'ran's arrival to the Weyr. She wondered why he was
here? To check up on her and make sure she wasn't doing her duty?

K'ran nodded at Saidrene as he entered the little watch shelter.
"Saidrene. How has the traffic been?"

"Not too bad," she said, forgetting about N'kalt's odd after-curfew
arrival in light of K'ran's unexpected appearance.

"Good," he said.

A moment of silence hung between them, drawing out longer and longer, as
he struggled to find something to say that wasn't just, 'carry on'.
Technically, he had only needed Rogueth to greet Ashareth to check in. he
hadn't needed to land. But he'd been drinking at the Amber Hills tavern
with his brother, trying to get his mind off them together last
night...and she was still on his mind when he got back...and Rogueth had
been settling down to land before he even really knew it. If he just left
now, wouldn't it look like fleeing? Wouldn't it _be_ fleeing?

Saidrene felt awkward just sitting there, should she stand? She wasn't
really sure what to say to K'ran because she felt as if she had made her
intentions clear the night before, and she also felt that he had made his
clear when he had assigned her night duties. "Is there more, sir?" she
asked.

He cleared his throat. "Just wondering if you had anything additional to
report about the traffic," he said, as though he hand't just asked that.

"Um, well," her brain searched for something to fill the awkward tension.
"N'kalt and his brown came back after curfew, that's about it."
"Interesting. I'm sure the weyrlingmasters will call him out on it."

Saidrene nodded, mouth closed, fingers drumming on the table as she
searched for something else to fill the silence. "Is that all, sir?" she
asked again.

"Yes." He paused, then said, "I'm sorry if you're taking this personally.
The watch duty on you and B'turan, I mean."

A single eyebrow arched. "Shouldn't I be?"

"Rapids has been suffering under a lack of discipline and internal
cohesion lately. The pair of you being late is another symptom of that.
Good reason or not, order must be maintained," he said, a little tightly.
Was he trying to justify it to himself or to her? He wans't quite sure.

"Yes, sir," Saidrene replied, not being outright defiant or rude, but
there was certainly a dry quality to her tone.

"Have Ashareth let Rogueth know if anything unusual comes up.
Otherwise...have a good watch, greenrider," he said. Nodding at her, he
walked over to Rogueth and mounted up to head back to his weyr.

}:Goodbye, Ashareth,:{ the bronze said in a much warmer mindvoice.

Saidrene gave a sardonic salute to K'ran behind his back. "You too,
Wingleader," she murmured after him.
