---
Silain fetched the blankets and stacked them around the patient. Then
he pulled the cooled ones away so the fresh heat was right again's the
skin.
Y'gel pulled up a long suture and sharp needle for her to begin sewing
him up. "I can do this part if you wish." He was fairly certain human
skin wasn't as tough as dragon hide.
Solmon peered at the mass and turned it in several different
directions examining it. "Yes, we have blood but not abnormal tissue.
It's a fat deposit." They'd never discovered what caused these kinds
of deposits but they were very rarely on the inside of a person.
"We'll examine it carefully after we're done here," he added and
placed it into a waiting basin.
Riyanth had kept a close mental touch on the bronze dragon, knowing
from her rider how important it was to hold any bronze at the Weyr to
life. The bronzes could be her mates, they were hers, she would not
let them slip. And even more than a natural possessiveness a gold held
for bronzes of the Weyr, she also still held affection for Yumath
specifically as the bronze who had last mated her. She remembered they
had made fine hatchlings.
When she saw Yumath's eyes change color to a shade of alarm, the gold
dragon clamped her mental hold down, and shifted herself to reaching
out her neck to rub her face along his. They could twine neck and tail
on the ground, he could shelter under her wing, if it _kept him here_.
}:Yumath, your rider will be fine,: { she assured.
On the ground in the waiting area, Kapera twisted her hands together.
She could feel Riyanth becoming more protective of Yumath and worried
it meant the surgery was going poorly. If it was, would a Healer or an
assistant come out and tell them? Or would they be too busy saving his
life?
Urlene glanced up at Y'gel. "The membrane first. It has to be stitched
for healing or he'll herniate. It's delicate." At Reptin's warning she
laid her inner wrist along side, D'hol's side. The skin was too cool
for her liking, despite the heated blankets, and was beginning to feel
clammy. "He may be going into thermal shock. We have to hurry. Silain,
more blankets and we need a brazier to raise the temperature in this
area. Reptin, keep a finger on his pulse. I need to know if it starts
getting erratic. "
Moving quickly, but keeping her nerves steady, she directed Y'gel to
hold the membrane together with a gesture. As she began stitching as
quickly as she dared, she glanced at Solmon. "Just in case, would you
please prepare the foxglove, Master Solmon? The syringe is on the
table and I yield to your experience with the dosage." The drug was
potentially lethal and though she had the knowledge to do so, she had
never had to give it.
Outside, Yumath felt the bond fade further and his hide began to tinge
with gray. There was a flutter in his chest that he knew instinctively
was not his own. Close to complete panic, Yumath roared in distress,
eyes whirling faster as he tried, but could not completely reach his
rider. Struggling against the mental restraint that Riyanth pressed
upon him, he spread his wings, muscles coiled in preparation to leap
into the air. He felt an answering mental pressure and buckled, sides
heaving as he leaned against his mate with growing despair. }: He is
leaving...Mine is leaving...:{
"Pulse is erratic," Reptin warned, "and he's getting cooler to the touch."
Solmon's eyes sparked with approval. She was handling everything
flawlessly. He'd noted the change in color and the clammy feel to the
skin. He'd been about to suggest the Foxglove but as she'd mentioned
it and he'd already spotted the vial, he just turned and prepared what
he estimated to be a proper dose for this man's mass.
Y'gel heard Yumath before Aughashyth could relay the information.
"We're losing him," he said.
Solmon held out the prepared dose to Urlene. "Ready," he said.
Still with her eggs, Panitath clamped down on Yumath to reinforce
Riyanth's control. }: Yours will live:{ She voiced for her rider.
Silain rushed back into the room with more heated blankets to pack
around the bronzrider.
Determination flared in Urlene's eyes after Y'gel's statement. "No,
we are not. Solmon, please hold the muscle together so Y'gel can
finish closing him up." She took the syringe and looked up at Reptin.
"Keep your finger on his pulse. This has to go in gradually. Let me
know the moment his heart beat strengthens. Silain, be prepared with a
heated blanket to cover his chest And bring the brazier." She turned
D'hol's arm to find the vessel in his arm, took a breath and inserted
the needlethorn of the syringe into his arm, slowly depressing the
plunger by increments.
Silain had the brazier outside the room waiting just in case so he
grabbed it and another blanket. Then he returned to the side of the
table.
Reptin's brow was furrowed with intense concentration as he monitored
the Wingleader's pulse. "Pulse has stabilized."
Urlene exhaled and quickly removed the syringe, putting it aside. "We
still need to get his internal temperature up so it doesn't happen
again. Y'gel are you close to finishing?"
"Two more stitches," he said as he whipped them carefully into place.
"There. Done." He swabbed the stitches with numbweed as he would have
on one of his own patients, placed gauze over the wound, and then
nodded to Silain.
The journeyman lifted the heated blanket up to the mans chin and then
added another fresh one on top of that.
Urlene picked up the other ready syringe, the one she had prepared
with the precious antibiotic. She injected it just as carefully, but
could feel a familiar tremble begin at her knees now that the surgery
was complete. "Reptin, I want him watched carefully. Any hint of
fever, any hint that his body temperature is not stabilizing, I want
to know about it immediately. I don't care what time it is. He's to
have no visitors until I clear it." He looked up at Y'gel and Solmon.
"Thank you both. Y'gel, if you'd inform the Weyrwoman, I'd appreciate
it. I'll inform the ones in the waiting area." And then, she knew,
she'd need some time alone before the remains of the adrenaline really
kicked in.
Yumath lay still against Riyanth's side, his own heaving, but the
panic in his mind subsided. He felt the bond again; it wasn't as
strong as it had been, but it no longer pulsed or faded. He rubbed his
cheek against the gold hide, soaking in her comfort and her warmth. }:
My mate. :{
Riyanth felt Yumath spread his wings and tense. She _leaned_ into him
mentally, with all of the power of a gold dragon's will. }:Your rider
is staying and so will you. He needs you strong for him. He needs
_you_ to keep him here,:{ the gold told him. Physically, she
reinforced her command by spreading her wing farther over him, by
stretching her neck over his and using her muzzle to press against
his, as though she could physically hold him to Pern.
It seemed to take a long time before Yumath began to tremble less and
lost the edge of panic. Riyanth crooned aloud. }:Yours is safe. You
are safe. You stay.:{
