"How is the nausea today?" K'yne asked as he escorted Erivana across
the Weyrbowl toward the infirmary, hand at the small of her back.
The greenrider breathed out a sigh as they walked. "I don't want to go
to drills anymore, or even ride Seryth," she admitted.
The brownrider winced. "That bad, huh?" K'yne hated feeling helpless
while Erivana was sick.
"It's not my favorite. I was going to talk to the Healers about it at
this appointment." She was finding it the worst part so far.
There was no one else in the waiting area when they arrived in the
infirmary. His eyes glanced around the infirmary to find it quiet,
with a few healers passing between the infirmary beds.
"Can I help you?" the apprentice at the front desk asked with a bright
smile.
"We're here for Erivana's appointment," K'yne told her.
Erivana added, "It's with Master Jadirah," in case the apprentice
didn't know. "Do we wait out here, or..."
"I have a room ready for you," the apprentice said as she stood,
pushing away from the desk. "Right this way," she led K'yne and
Erivana back to a small examination room. "There's a gown there
waiting for you, if you would change into that and then have a seat on
the examination table, Master Jadirah will be right with you."
Erivana waited for her to leave, then changed into the gown. She was
still feeling a little embarrassed to change in front of K'yne,
despite the fact that he'd won her flight and seen her naked before
and that that was why they were _here_ in the first place. They hadn't
slept together since then. Being seen by the Healer and examined was a
bit physically uncomfortable but far less bad, because she'd known the
Healer in question since she was a girl.
She'd just sat down when the Master Healer entered. "Erivana, sorry to
keep you waiting," she apologized. "K'yne, how are you?" she added, to
not eclude the brownrider.
"Master Jadriah," K'yne nodded his head to the woman. He moved to a
place by Erivana's head to get out of the healer's way.
She looked at Erivana. "Shall we get the awful part done with first,
then we'll talk about the rest?" She knew the greenrider was terribly
shy about the exams.
"Please," Erivana said. She reached a hand up to take K'yne's.
Jadirah kept up a patter while she washed her hands and got ready.
"Haven't seen you in here as a patient, so I gather you're staying out
of being injured. I'll have to give you an exam some time, I try to
get all the handsome bronze and brownriders at my table," she said
with an exaggerated wink at him.
K'yne chuckled, his hand wrapping warmly around Erivana's. "I do my
best to avoid the infirmary at all costs. No offense to any of the
fine people that work in it."
"It's a shame, you're missing out on some of the loveliest ladies," she
teased.
Erivana's hand tightened around K'yne's as the exam happened.
"Things are looking good so far," Jadirah said as she stood up and
went to wash her hands again. "You're progressing as expected. Any
major complaints?"
"Vomiting, still. Nausea with a lot of foods."
"I can write you some herbal drinks for that. Anything else?"
"Having to pee a lot," she added, blushing a little.
Jadirah came back over with a listening tube and held it against
Erivana's belly. "This is going to be cold," she warned, then frowned
in concentration.
K'yne watched with interest, thumb stroking over the back of Erivana's
hand. He'd been worried that something might be wrong with how sick
Erivana had been not that he was any sort of expert on pregnancies.
Jadirah looked up, eyes sparkling. "There's a heartbeat," she said.
"Oh, I'd like to listen," Erivana said. Then she bit her lip, looked at
K'yne. "You should go first, you're at a better position."
"You sure?" He asked, but at her look, he let go of her hand and moved
around to where Jadirah was holding the listening tool. Putting his
ear to it, K'yne found himself holding his breath as he waited, and
then... there it was, a strong, fast fluttering beat. The brownrider's
stern, angular features melted into a smile.
Erivana saw his face totally change when he heard it. **He looks softer
and more approachable this way,** drifted across her mind. "You're
gorgeous," she blurted out before she could stop herself.
Jadirah decided to turn away and say nothing about what she just heard,
but her lips quirked. She'd heard from Erivana that they hadn't been
planning this, that
there was no affection between them beyond just friendships; it hadn't
been like her and A'kades' decisions to have children. But she was
amused by how the greenrider suddenly looked so young and so
transported by K'yne's soft expression.
K'yne's eyes flew to Erivana's, something unreadable sparking in the
blue orbs. For a moment it was easy to forget that they weren't alone
in the room. "Your turn," he told her, straightening and gesturing for
Jadirah to fix it so that Erivana could hear.
The Healer did, gesturing at Erivana to adjust how she was lying and
holding it up for her. "Here you go, my dear."
Erivana listened, and listened, and heard it. Her eyes widened and she
looked across to catch K'yne's, brown and blue meeting. "Oh. That's
our baby. _Our_ baby," she repeated with some wonder.
"Yeah," K'yne agreed, "our baby."
Jadirah said, "Why don't you keep listening for another few moments, while
I go get you some teas for the nausea?"
Erivana nodded. "Thank you, ma'am."
"Not a problem," Jadirah said, stepping out of the room to give them
privacy to keep listening. She was beginning to wonder how long this was
going to stay a companionate arrangement between them. The looks they were
exchanging just then...was that just wonder, or was something forming? She
resolved she'd ask Saibra about it some time.
