Ma'din handed Kielya the fishing pole, the fat bait wiggling on the
hook, then wiped his hands off. He drew up a knee to rest his forearm
on and cast out his own. He didn't really fish often, didn't see the
point when Aznith could simple swipe them up, but he supposed it was
calming. He glanced at his little sister and frowned, churning over
thoughts in his mind. "Hey, squirt? You've been spending a lot more
time with D'hol, haven't you?"

"Yeah," she said holding the pole in both hands over the water.

He watched his line, glancing occasionally at her through the corner
of his eye. "What's the deal with him and your mom?"

She shrugged one shoulder. "Sometimes they like each other, sometimes
they don't." She imitated Ma'din pulling back her rod and tossing it
back in again.

"Not surprises there," Ma'din mumbled, then tapped her arm."Wait for a
while and see if you get a nibble, Squirt." He drummed his fingers on
his knee. "Does she ever talk about D'hol to you? About what he does
in his wing."

"Okay," she said and let her line lie there in the water for a bit.
"She says he's a good wingleader and my da K'deren thinks so too."

"Yeah, heard about that too. He's in one of the higher wings. " Ma'din
tugged lightly on his line, just to attract a potential bite. Kielya
was a child of the Weyr, she would know what the result of flying
Thread could be and the dangers of it. "So am I. You ever worry?"

"Sometimes," she gave her one-shoulder shrug again, "But momma says
that worrying won't change it so it's better to just wait and see and
feel bad if something bad actually happens." She was pretty proud of
that word 'actually'. Her Harper had been teaching some bigger words
and she was trying to use them. "Do you worry?" She looked up at her
tall brother. All her brothers were tall actually. Well except for
Kendren but he was still mostly a baby.

"Good way to look at it, Squirt." He ruffled her hair. "Aznith and me,
we're too good to have to worry." He winked at her. "But you know,
even if anything bad does happen to someone you care about, and it
does happen sometimes, Squirt, I'll be here for you, okay? Not
planning on going anywhere."

"Yup," she smiled up at him again then her head whipped around "Think
I got a bite," she squealed.

"Okay, hold on." He moved in beside her and watched the line, speaking
quietly to her. "Don't reel in yet. Make sure that fish is on there
good and starts pulling."

She waited until she felt some tugging then she jerked up on the line
and began reeling it in. "Ohhhh," she giggled.

Ma'din grinned. "There ya go, Squirt! He's a fighter, ain't he?" He
didn't help her as some might have, letting her have all the pride of
the catch. "Let him struggle a bit and make him fight. He'll be all
tired out and then you can plop that bugger right in your basket."

"Yeah," she grinned and then did what Ma'din said but she got so
excited she began jumping up and down as she tried to reel it in.

"Easy there, Squirt! Keep a good grip on your pole and reel that
sucker in nice and easy. You got 'I'm, just pull him in!"

And just like that the fish came out of the water and Kielya whooped.

Ma'din gave an answering whoop. "Ya did it, Squirt!!" He hugged Kielya
and helped her haul the fish closer with the line. "He's a big one
too. Good job!" He grinned at his little sister with pride.

"Do you think Chaysea would have them cook it for me?" She raised
hopeful eyes to Ma'din's.

"Chaysea? Who's that?" He snorted, then pointed to himself. "Shards,
Bite Size, I can cook it for you. But first..." He pulled his belt
knife. "I'm going to teach you how to clean the sucker."

"She's the headwoman and she's nice," Kielya said a little offended by
his tone. "But you can cook?"

"Sure she is, but this is our time." He grinned as he settled back on
his haunches. "Sure can. I'm not completely useless around a good
fire."

"Really?" She was beginning to think maybe her brother was the
smartest man she knew. "Even mama doesn't know how to cook."

"My mama worked in the kitchens." Ma'din explained. "Yeah, I can cook.
And you should learn too. It can come in handy sometimes." He lowered
his voice to a whisper. "Especially if you don't like what the Dining Hall is
serving."

That brought out a giant grin. "Oh I really like fish but not
vegetables so much."

"Me either." He winked at her. "Let's clean him and then I'll show you
how to cook him just how you like."
