J'ackt

Faranth, he was tired of just laying here. J'ackt grimaced as he
shifted on the cot, trying to find something, anything, that was
interesting to look at. His shoulder and side ached and itched, but
he wasn't supposed to scratch, and Zith had informed him that if he
tried to leave again without the Healer's permission that he would
tell Panitath immediately. Traitor.

"I'm here to bust you out," a voice suddenly whispered from the other
side of the curtain, and then a familiar head of inky black hair poked
through. "Okay, well, maybe just cheer you up, but I brought
supplies." Saidrene's eyes were lively as she stepped in with an
armful of "things".

She was greeted with an eager smile, then a groan of disappointment.
"I've been trying to get out, but fecking shards, they've even got
Zith keeping an eye on me. And I don't even want to say what Urlene
threatened me with." His brow furrowed and he tried to sit up a bit
straighter. "What you got?"

"A few things," she said, depositing them at the foot of the bed to
display one at a time. "Item number one, I spent quite a bit of time
on, I'll have you know." It was merely a sheet of paper, but she
unfolded it with a mischevious grin. "I have taken the liberty of
drawing you and I as stick figures." She handed him the drawing. "In
scene 1 you will see you scowling while Stumpy eats your shoe. In
scene two, I am whacking you with a wooden sword. And uh," she lowered
her voice conspiratorially, "in scene three, we're doing some very
questionable stick figure things. I made sure not to label us with
names in case this incredibly important document fell into the wrong
hands."

He stared at the drawings for a long moment, and his lips trembled as
he attempted to keep a straight face. The frown on one of the circles
nearly covered half of the face and the dashes over the eyes... He
glanced up at her and spoke vey slowly, his voice trembling with
difficult restraint. " Uhm..you and a sword? Hitting me with it?" He
took a breath, bit his lip hard, but the third finally broke him. He
sputtered, choked, and finally erupted in a belly shaking laugh. "I
look like a runner!"

Saidrene was pleased that the drawings had the effect on J'ackt that
she'd desired. She had worried that he mind find them annoying rather
than humorous. "Well, some men would take that as a compliment," she
gave him a toothy grin.

He continued to laugh, then held his wounded side. "Ow...oh
Faranth..." His chest shook with mirth as he eyed the picture again,
then wiped at his eyes as they watered. "That hurts...but.." he
continued to snicker. "Faranth, Saidrene...you don't bend that way.
I've tried!" He erupted again in more laughter. "Oh..shards...feck it
all..."

"Now, contain yourself or you'll have that Urly-woman over here
glowering at us and kicking me out." Saidrene stood and retrieved
another item from the foot of the bed. "I brought you this, too. It's
not funny, but it might give you something to do when you're bored."
She handed him a box that was made of various pieces of wood of
different colors. "It's a puzzle box. If you move all of the
compartments correctly it'll open up. And I left you something inside
to give you incentive to figure it out."

He tried, he really did, but the massive stick appendage nearly
brought him to tears again before he was able to control himself. He
took the box and peered at it, then gave it a careful shake. "What's
in it?"

"I'm not telling. It's a surprise," she said, waggling her eyebrows.

"Oh, come on..." He shook the box harder, trying to figure it out. If
only he had his knife with him. "Fine...I can figure it out." He
paused glancing up at Saidrene. "Hey, can you check on Stumpy? A
drudge is supposed to be feeding him for me, but I want to make sure
he hasn't destroyed my weyr."

Saidrene cocked her head to the side. "Alina's been taking care of
him. At least, a whole lot of his hair was in her weyr."

That brought him up from testing a few of the sliding blocks and he
frowned. "Alina? Why is she taking care of Stumpy? She can't stand me."

"I don't know, I didn't even bring it up. I just figured you must have
asked her to look after him." Of course, she'd had other things on her
mind when she'd been talking to Alina, namely K'ran.

"No, I haven't spoken to her in months." He would have to give that
more thought later. Why would she even bother? Maybe she just liked
his canine. He shook it off, then eyed Saidrene. " Okay, I know that
look. " He set the box down. "N'vanik win Ashareth's flight again?"

The greenrider laughed, caught off guard by the question. "No, he
didn't. Why would you ask that?"

"You look like Stumpy after he's found a new boot."

It was Saidrene's turn to guffaw at the mental image. "Oh, that's what
I look like, huh? Be glad you're injured, bronzerider, or I'd pinch
you in your tender spot." She shrugged her shoulders a little and gave
in to his question. "Ashareth rose on the same day as your..." she met
his eyes, "accident. K'ran and his Rogueth won."

"You like my tender spot." He laid back, the previous laughter now
making his side ache. "Accident my ass." He snorted, then arched a
brow. "I know. I couldn't get Zith to budge. He'd won one the day
before; I guess he thought I needed a break." He doubted he'd be up
for anything enjoyable like that for weeks. Urlene had just snorted
and walked off when he'd asked. "K'ran huh?"

"Yeah, it was, uh, a good flight." She had a hard time hiding how good
it was on her face, even though she tried.

That brought a smirk. "I can see that." He tilted his head. "Saidrene,
you're drooling."

Her hand automatically flew to cover her mouth. "Shut up!" she laughed.

"Not a chance. Lucky bastard." The last was given as a muttering grumble.

She patted his leg through the blanket. "And here I was trying to cheer you up."

His eyes narrowed. "If you go a bit higher up..." He paused then
grumped again. "Never mind. I'm not exactly in any shape to do
anything even if you did." He sighed and then eyed her again. "So, are
you going to jump him again?" He stopped and held up a finger. "Wait a
minute...You did already, didn't you? That's why you're still drooling."

Saidrene bit on her bottom lip in an obviously guilty face. "I
sorta... showed up at his weyr... last night."

His brows rose. "Really? And you jumped him, huh?" He smirked. "Good
girl. I've taught you well. Go get 'im."

She shrugged a little. "He's my Wingleader, it's against the rules.
I'll probably be in trouble for it. I guess I'll find out at
wingdrills today."

His smirk widened to a grin. "Feck the rules, remember?"

"I'll remember that when I've been transferred to the Queen's Wing on
night duty for the next month." Saidrene smiled.

He snorted. "K'ran's a man and bronzerider at that. Not going to
happen. Maybe he'll go back for more." His grin remained. "Like I did."

"I guess we'll see." She honestly wasn't sure what to expect. "I'd better get going, Ashareth says we're going to be late for drills. Is there something you'd like me to bring you the next time I visit?"

"A way out. " J'ackt began toying with the puzzle box again, brows knit as he began to concentrate. "I'm ready for my own bed."

"Soon enough," she said. "But maybe I can bring your pillow from your bed? I never sleep as good without my own."

"Sure. That would help, thanks." He studied the box and then glanced up. "Hey. Kiss, then go."

Saidrene bent over him, long hair cascading down like a curtain, and dropped a kiss to his forehead. "Like that?"

"Tease." He tilted his head, managed to quickly kiss her lower lip, then patted her bottom affectionately. " Go on before I get us both in trouble. Thanks for the box and the drawings. They're going right on my weyr walls."

"You're welcome. And try to behave yourself while I'm gone," she winked.
