Usually F'lin lingered in the dining cavern to catch up with friends and wingmates, but he hadn't felt social that evening. Instead he used his Wingsecond knots to get a drudge to pack a tray for him, and now he sat on the edge of Seneth's ledge, watching the night deepen around the Weyr. Lights glowed from dragon ledges and spilled into the weyrbowl from the candidate barracks and ground-level weyrs, and from here he could just pick out the roar of the sea. Seneth dozed behind him, his thoughts filled with Anaeryth, just as his rider mulled over Lanniya's visit earlier that day.
It would have been so easy to take her back to his weyr. He wanted her there now, but a cooling off period would let them both make a sensible decision. Shards, he shouldn't have invited her back next sevenday. Lanniya hadn't been subtle about her desires, and it did make a difference to hear that K'ale knew what she was up to, but still. Lanniya was trouble. He was still angry that she hadn't confided in him before stupidly /between/ing through time to rescue her family. And she hadn't told him that she and K'ale had come to an understanding allowing relationships outside of the two of them. She was reckless and mercurial. Getting caught up in her wake could endanger everything he was trying to build for himself.
}:But you like her,:{ Seneth shifted behind him, his hide scraping against the stone as he resettled himself.
**Shards and shells, I wish I didn't.** F'lin took a pull from his beer bottle. It would be easier if she wasn't funny and kind, and fun to be around. And if she didn't have such a great body. He tried really, really hard not to think about the way her hips felt beneath his palms or the little dimples low on her back.
}:I will catch Anaeryth when she next rises,:{ Seneth added, a bit smug.
F'lin snorted at that. **She's not at Dolphin Cove anymore. She's not yours to chase.**
}:I will chase her and I will catch her,:{ Seneth replied calmly. }:You chase on land, I will chase in the air.:{
F'lin shook his head again. It was simple for dragons. Catch the gold, sire a clutch. And Faranth knew that he wanted that for his dragon. Finally catching gold would solve a lot of his problems. If his dragon sired a clutch, it would prove that he was worthy of his knots once and for all. First a junior queen, then a senior one... maybe in a turn or two, if he worked hard and was lucky... and then there was Lanniya herself. Rumor had it that if the goldrider liked you, it was easier for a bronze to catch her gold. And maybe if Seneth caught Anaeryth in a flight it would shake loose their... whatever it was. Crazy lust. Or just plain crazies.
}:You are making things too complicated again. You wish to fly her, and she wants you to.:{ Seneth exhaled, ruffling the back of F'lin's hair. }:We could go there now.:{
**That would be a really bad idea.** But oh-so-tempting. F'lin took another drink from his bottle of beer, then grimaced. It was getting warm. **But you're right about one thing-- this is complicated.**
Seneth rumbled his disagreement and sent a wave of images at his rider, mostly of Anaeryth in the sea.
F'lin closed his eyes and let the images wash over him, and when Seneth stopped he let his mind wander back to the night that he and Lanniya had spent together, before she'd been transferred. Maybe a night or two together would get her out of his system, even without Seneth winning Anaeryth's flight. He could go back to building his knots, to build his Wing, and eventually, some day, rebuild his Weyr... maybe just a night or two, and he'd be able to escape her and the drama that followed her like storm clouds. Maybe this time would be different.
Maybe it wouldn't. But he'd play it out and look forward to what happened next.
