Ma'din

Faranth, he was tired. The night watches that K'reyel had handed to
him did get wearying, but he would be shafted if he was going to waste
his rest day by sleeping all day. He had someone to see. Ma'din
strolled down the hall, a hurried drudge directing him where he needed
to go. As he approached, he paused, his mouth spreading into a grin.
Right there in front of the door he had been directed to was just the
person he wanted to see. He crossed his arms and called out. "Hey
there, squirt. Didya miss me?"

"Ma'din," Kielya squealed and ran to jump into his arms.

With a laugh, he caught her up and hugged her. "Glad you see you too."
He carefully set her down and poked her nose lightly. "Came to see
your mother." He gestured with his head towards the door. "She in a
good mood?"

Kielya hugged his neck and then shrugged. "Something bad happened and
she's to do stuff with her job but her mom part is nice today."

Bad stuff? His brow knit, his mind immediately going to...no, she'd be
more upset if it were D'hol. He brought his smile back for her.
"Well, maybe her _mom part_ will talk to me, hm?" He offered a hand
and knocked on the door, then looked down at his little sister and
winked.

"Come," Cyradis called. She turned over her message to Corowal and set
down her pen as she saw the door open. She'd heard Kielya's voice in
the hall so she already had a welcoming smile.

Ma'din let Kielya drag him inside, his expression amused. Squeezing
her hand lightly, he released her to give a slight bow to Cyradis, but
kept his eyes on the woman, studying her. So _this_ was Kielya's
mother. She looked so...little. "Weyrwoman Cyradis?" He rose, hating
the deference he was expected to give. Shards, he didn't even bow to
Saibra. But, from the advice he had been given, he had to suck it up
and play nice for once.

She paused and her smile froze for just a moment before she smoothly
stood and invited him to a seat on the couch "Ma'din," she asked.
"Very nice to meet you," she said graciously. She was expecting him to
call on her for one thing and he was the spitting image of D'hol at
that age other than the hair. Her lips tilted up. "I see D'hol gave
as good as he got," her dark eyes twinkled.

"Kielya," she nodded to her daughter, "why don't you get those
pastries and see if your brother would like one?"

"Oh sure," she skipped over to the sideboard and grabbed the basket.
"Chaysea makes the best cinnamon buns," she confided as she held it
for him to choose.

"Thanks." He took a seat and for once, sat up instead of lounging. He
rested his elbows on his knees, examining his surroundings with quick
flicks of his eyes before returning to Kielya. His eyes were warm on
the girl as he plucked a pastry. "Thanks, squirt."

He held it, not eating as he looked up at Cyradis. His lips lifted
ruefully. "Yeah, I suppose the old man can still make an impact when
he wants to."

Cyradis laughed. "Oh my, you have a gift for understatement," she
grinned at him. "Would you like some Klah or tea to go with that?"

He glanced at Kielya and then back up at her. "Its neccessary, I
guess." He leaned over to Kielya and mock whispered. " I got in a
fight with a cranky old watch wher." He lightly tapped the fading
bruise on his cheek, then looked up. "Uh, klah is fine, thanks. "

She got up and grabbed a cup and the pot pouring and then returning to
him with it. "I understand you wanted to spend some time with Kielya."

"Thanks." Her words made him sit up as he took the cup in his free
hand. **Here it comes.** "Yeah, I do." He took a sip of his klah.
"D'hol said it was up to you. I guess he's not really that involved."
Not a surprise, all things considered, Faranth knew he hadn't been
with him. " But he did make me swear on Aznith I wouldn't take her out
of the Weyr....without asking."

"Oh did he now?" She half smiled. "He's been pretty protective since
he found out she was his." She shrugged. "I made kind of that same
demand on him at first. So he's probably just passing it on to you."
She took a sip from her cup. "I'd just like to know where she is and
where you want to go if you'd like to take her somewhere else. It's a
mom thing," she smiled. "Panitath has always been very protective of
my eggs," she laughed.

Ma'din's brows shot up. Was he? As much as he adored Kielya, the old
feeling of resentment flared once again in him. It wasn't her fault,
he reminded himself. "Oh. Guess he's softening about his flight babes
as he ages." He shrugged, pushing that old anger aside. "I can do
that. "

She tilted her head with a puzzled look. "D'hol and I were involved at
the time of her conception," she said slowly. "Yes there was a flight
too but I was also Weyrmated at the time. When it came down to it I
didn't choose him and he left before I ever found out I was pregnant."
She stopped, that was far more than she'd intended to share. It
didn't matter at the Weyr most of the time but Kielya was a love child
even if she was also a flight child. She saw the flashes of emotion in
Ma'din and thought she could guess at the reasons why. "So I guess
we're agreed then," she wanted to reach out and touch him but figured
it wouldn't be welcomed. "Just keep Panitath informed of where you are
and we'll be fine."

"Wait, what?" Ma'din stared at Cyradis, brow furrowed so deeply that
they shadowed his eyes. "I thought that..." He flicked a gaze a
Kielya, who seemed to get taking all of this in stride. He bit his
inner cheek hard as he struggled to remember to be polite to this
woman. He almost wanted to laugh; the old man had been tossed aside,
had he? And by a weyrmated gold rider, oh that was just too rich. And
it explained quite a bit. He tucked the information away for later
thought. "I'll do that." He struggled visibly to keep his face even.
"Is once a sevenday all right to see her?"

The hopeful look on Kielya's face was almost too much to bear but she
chuckled and nodded. "But" she held up a finger and her daughter's
face fell. "If she's got Harper lesson work, she has to finish it
first. Alright?"

He inclined his head. "Sure." And if she needed 'help' with those
lessons, he'd be just as willing to assist. What were big brothers
for? He smiled, teeth flashing, but wasn't quite able to make the
expression innocent. "So, do you know if my dear old sire is busy at
the moment?"

"Yes!" Kielya pumped her fist. "He's in his office," she piped up.

Cyradis chuckled and held out her hand. "Very nice to meet you Ma'din.
My greetings to your lifemate."
