Ma'din

Ma'din glared at the man who faced him, arms crossed firmly across his
chest. "Feck you, old man, why should I care? Why did you even bother
to ask me out here?" He spat on the ground. "I should have ignored
you." He glanced around at the empty clearing, brightly lit by the
moons.

D'hol took in the glower calmly, unconsciously mirroring his eldest
son's stance. He had known Ma'din wouldn't ignore him, but what they
had to discuss and how they would most likely need to discuss it,
couldn't be done in the Weyr proper. Ma'din's reaction to what he had
had to say also didn't surprise him. "You've been wanting to lay hands
on me since you saw me." He flicked his fingers at him in a beckoning
gesture. "Here's your chance."

"You think I'm stupid?" The blue eyes narrowed suspiciously.

D'hol smirked, purposefully goading the younger man. "Are you? I'm
right here. No one else is. That's the whole point." He glanced over
at Yumath and Ma'din's brown, both watching, though Yumath was more
perturbed at the entire situation.

}: I dislike this. I think your plan is ill advised, Mine. If he hits
you in the stomach… :{

**I'll block.**

}: Aznith's is younger than you and Aznith says that his rider is very
quick. Aznith doesn't like this either. :{

**Thanks for reminding me. ** The reply was dry and sarcastic. **Trust me.**

Ma'din snarled and stalked forward, fists clenched. D'hol tensed, but
held his ground. "You really want me to put you to the ground, old
man?" D'hol's answering smirk instantly infuriated Ma'din and the blow
that he threw was quick and meant to be devastating.

D'hol blocked the punch, jabbing lightly at Ma'din's short ribs and
giving him just enough of a tap to cause pain. Ma'din winced and
before long, the pair began exchanging blows in earnest. Ma'din was
indeed younger, and quicker, but D'hol was far more experienced and
less impulsive. Blows did land, despite the effort to block; D'hol had
to twist more than what was comfortable to avoid blows to the abdomen
and take the glancing strikes on his ribs. Ma'din couldn't avoid some
of the D'hol's strikes either, and before long, both had split lips,
bruised jaws, and matching swelling eyes.

The dragons were getting more anxious, and Yumath was ready to summon
Chioneth, despite the possible consequences, when a solid blow put
Ma'din in the dirt. Aznith stiffened, but paused when he heard a wry
chuckle.

Ma'din looked up at D'hol, spitting blood and wiping his mouth. "I
guess you can still pack a wallop." He wiped at his lip, still
chuckling. There was a measure of hard-won respect in the words.

D'hol looked down, blood trickling from a cut along the corner of his
eye. "You finished now?"

"Think so." As D'hol offered a hand, Ma'din swept his leg, catching
D'hol behind the knee and bringing him down hard on his back. The
grunt exploded from the older rider and Ma'din lifted his head. "Heh.
Now I am."

D'hol laid on his back with a scowl. "Should have known better."

"Yeah, you should have." Ma'din grinned from his prone position and
took a long breath, rubbing his ribs. "I think you cracked a rib."

"You rattled my teeth." D'hol worked his jaw from side to side, testing it.

"We're both going to have sharding black eyes."

"Hmm…Yeah. I'm sure there'll be trouble over it."

"I'm used to it." There was a pause as Ma'din turned his head to look
at D'hol. "I want to see my sister."

D'hol grimaced as he rubbed his own ribs. "You'll have to talk to her
mother. It's up to her."

"You'll clear it with Saibra, then?"

"As long as you swear you won't take her out of the Weyr without
permission, then yes."

Ma'din grunted. "Yeah. I can do that, I guess."

"Still up to Cyradis though."

"I'll ask nicely."

D'hol snorted. "Got it all out of your system?"

Ma'din grinned at his father. "Yeah. We're good."
