Description: T'nep's Meith gets looked over by Dragonhealer K'lvin
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 1 of Turn 9
**It's better than sitting in your weyr.** K'lvin reminded himself for
the one hundredth time as he nodded politely and waved off an overly
concerned Weyrling. He'd seen the boy in the infimary with his dragon
countless times, always because he got nervous any time his dragon was
the slightest bit uncomfortable. K'lvin made a note to speak to
K'sedel about the worrywart.
If he couldn't be apart of a fighting Wing any longer than at least
working in the dragon infirmary made K'lvin feel of use again. That
and occasionally riding Search with Riveenata tended to be the
highlight of his days.
Next on the list, he looked down, was a routine Weyrling check-up.
"Good morning, sir," the weyrling said, giving the retired rider a
quick salute. "T'nep, weyrling to brown Meith here for a check-up."
"Yeah, yeah, at ease," K'lvin said, waving off the salute. "I'm
K'lvin." He cut through any pleasantries and began eyeing Meith
critically. "How has Meith's appetite been?"
T'nep stifled a sigh. He was a very young weyrling, and he tried his
best to seem as adult and mature as all the other weyrlings, but
invariably, people still treated him like a kid. "He eats well, sir.
He eats once a sevenday. Sometimes twice."
"Good appetite then," K'lvin remarked, looking for any irregularities
with muscle and fat distribution. "Would you have him lift his wings?"
He asked T'nep. K'lvin could have had Xmrenth ask but he hated
bypassing a rider in that way.
"Yes, sir." The brown leaned back on his hind legs and stretched his
wings out wide to be admired by the dragonhealer. At least that was
the purpose in Meith's mind.
**My wings are very big compared to some. Make sure and tell him
that,** the brown said to his lifemate.
**I'm pretty sure that's obvious. We shouldn't brag,** T'nep said
sternly, not wanting to get into trouble in one of his final
inspections of weyrlinghood.
K'lvin calculated Meith's wingspan and then did some mental math,
"Good span." He gestured for Meith to close his wings. "Are you
excited to be joining the Weyrling staff?" he asked. He knew that some
young riders were disappointed not to go into the fighting Wings, and
then there were others who enjoyed being a part of the staff that
helped the next group of Weyrlings.
"I would rather be fighting, sir. Meith's big enough for it." And it
wasn't his brown's fault he was so young.
This brought the hint of a smile to the corners of K'lvin's mouth,
"Yeah, that's the way I feel too, but sometimes a good dragonrider
just has to follow orders."
"Yes, sir." T'nep said, understanding that it was a situation that
couldn't be helped. "But when our time comes, we'll be ready."
"Of course you will be," K'lvin agreed. "Okay, mind if I see you two
in the air together?" It enabled the dragonhealer to access any
physical weaknesses or deficits that Meith might have in the air.
"Yes, sir. Do you want us to just circle, or just jump up and down a
couple times?"
"A circle will be fine," K'lvin instructed.
"Aye, sir." T'nep was well practiced at mounting his Meith now, and
was able to do so in a fluid motion. He gripped tightly with his
knees as the brown sprang into the air and after a few beats for
height settled into a lazy circle over the ground.
}:He's a very nice man to want to look at me,:{ the brown beamed
proudly, enjoying what he saw as admiration.
K'lvin studied Meith through two lenses, first as a dragonhealer, and
then secondly as a former Wingleader. He remembered doing this same
thing with Senior Weyrlings, trying to determine who he might want in
his Wing.
"Meith looks good," K'lvin said when they landed. "Keep taking good
care of him and I can foresee nothing but good things for the two of
you."
T'nep let out a grateful long sigh. They passed inspection. He
wasn't sure why that worried him. Meith was perfect. But he was
always afraid he wasn't doing something as well as the others in his
weyrling class. "Yes, sir, we will do our best."
"If you need anything feel free to have Meith speak to Xmrenth."
K'lvin looked over at his bronze, who was lounging in such a way that
he only had to tilt his head marginally to watch the proceedings of
the check-up.
"Yes, sir, I will right away!" T'nep checked with Meith to be sure
there was nothing the brown was concerned with now, and was satisfied
to hear that the brown only wanted a good bath and oiling.
K'lvin watched the young pair walk away. He was certain he would hear
high praise about them in the future.
