Saidrene

}: Mine is coming to see yours. :{ There was a pause. }: About now. :{

J'ackt didn't give that much more of a warning as he knocked on
Saidrene's door to her weyr. "Saidrene? Are you there?"

"Here," she called, surprised that he had even bothered knocking. The
greenrider was in shorts and a strappy tank top, sitting in the middle
of her weyr with her riding straps, thread, needle and oil.

He opened the door and slipped in, closing it behind him. He glanced
down to where she was sitting and arched a brow. "You need new ones."

The greenrider's lips quirked a little, "These are my practice ones,
with a little mending, they'll be fit to fly." Saidrene flicked her
hair out of her way, trying to keep the long, black curtain away from
the oil pot. "What brings you by?"

"They need to be replaced." He insisted as he plopped to the ground
beside her in a sprawl. "You can fall during a practice too." He then
shrugged. "Just wanted to. Missed you."

Saidrene cocked an eyebrow, but didn't comment, and instead kept
working on her straps, "How are things with Alina?"

He watched as she sewed, studying her motions. "Good, I think. But
she's still afraid of me in some ways, I think. She's skittish. How've
you been? Why haven't you come to see me?"

Alina, skittish? That sounded about right. "That works both ways you
know, you haven't been to see me either, besides now." Saidrene
shrugged her shoulders, "Haven't had anything to say, I guess."

"Never was a problem before." He mused, then nodded. "But you've got a
point." His eyes lifted from where she worked the leather. "K'yne
wrote me. Sent me a necklace, but I sent it back."

Saidrene's brow furrowed as she worked the needle through the leather,
"A necklace? Why did you send it back?"

His lower lip pursed. "He said it was my Mam's." His brow furrowed.
"If it was then..." He paused, trying to explain it. "If he loved my
Mam and she gave it to him, she'd want him to have it, not me."

"Your mam loved you a lot, she would have probably liked knowing a
piece of her was with you but it was a nice gesture at least."
Saidrene looked up, "You haven't seen him since Dragonsfall have you?"

He shrugged a bit. "No. I haven't."

"Has he tried to see you?" she asked.

"No." J'ackt looked up at her face. "Why would he?"

"K'yne is stubborn, real stubborn, he doesn't normally let anyone tell
him what he can and can't do or where he can and cant go. My mom hates
his guts and he still followed her to Dragonsfall so he could be near
me and Kaibren." Saidrene set her needle aside. "He's always wanted
children," she shrugged. "I think, once the shock wears off, you will
find yourself seeing him more, even if you don't want to."

J'ackt frowned. "I thought your mom and him were friends or
something." He made himself comfortable, half laying down and propped
himself on his elbow. " I'm not a child and honestly, I don't think
that'll happen."

Saidrene shook her head, "I don't know all the details of it, but my
mom couldn't stand the sight of him for a long time. I think it's
because he loves her, the weyrmating type, but she doesn't feel the
same way in return. I think something happened between them after my
dad died and it put a rift between them. She's seemed friendlier
toward him though ever since she got serious with R'enh."

J'ackt went silent for a long moment. "So he probably never really
loved my Mam then."

"What makes you say that," she didn't follow the train of thought.

"if he's been in love with Saibra all this time, how could he have
loved my mother?"

"All that took place after my dad died, and I was... eight I think? So
he would have been with your mom way before then." Saidrene picked at
her fingers. "Isn't it possible to love two people?"

That made him pause in thought as he considered it. He exhaled through
his nose, silent for a long moment before he looked over at her.
"Yeah, I think so."

"I think he must have, or the news about her death wouldn't have been
so hard for him to hear." Saidrene concluded.

"Maybe." He had to admit that, if only a little bit. "Does he ever
come here to visit you?"

"He use to, but he's got a Wingsecond spot and since finding out about
you he hasn't been. I think he's trying not to seem like he's pushing
you for contact." Saidrene stood to clean her hands. "But I've been to
Dragonsfall a couple times to visit him and my mother since she's
pregnant."

"He can come and visit you without bothering me. I don't want to keep
you from your family, Saidrene." He then paused and tilted his head.
"I kind of didn't come here without a specific reason. I was wondering
if you could do me a favor."

"Sure," she said automatically. "What is it?"

"Cut my hair for me?" He pulled at a lock of hair at his brow. "It's
time for a good hacking, but last time I did it, it was kind of
jagged."

Saidrene smirked a little at the request, "Let me get my scissors."
She fetched them and a straight razor as well. "I'm sure there are
some lower caverns girls that would be tripping over themselves to cut
your hair, you know." Saidrene grabbed a towel and draped it around
his shoulders.

His brow arched as she draped the towel. "I don't know that I'll trust
them with blades anywhere near my head." His lips quirked upwards.
"Some hold grudges, you know."

"Ah yes, I could think of a few that might have a bone to pick with
you." Saidrene grinned a little as she wet his hair and combed it out.
Her fingers provided a shield against his skin as she began cutting
the hair over his forehead.

"And I know what bone they'd want, too. No thanks. I'd like that in
one piece and just where it is." The reply was dry, but he held still
as she snipped. "Just chop it off short, if you want. It grows so
bloody fast that it won't take long to come back."

Saidrene's brow was drawn down against her eyes as she concentrated on
neatly trimming the blonde hair, shortening the bangs close to the
scalp as he said, but leaving enough of them to stick up a little in
the front. "This'll feel better under your riding helmet for sure."

"Hope so." He held still while she cut, falling silent as she worked.

"All done," she said, running her fingers through his hair and
ruffling what was left to get rid of any stray hairs.

"Thanks." He sighed and then leaned back, resting his back against her
knees. He'd always enjoyed the sensation of fingers through his hair;
they calmed and soothed him. His eyes closed, his lips slightly
curled.

"Any time." Saidrene said, meaning it. She never wanted their
friendship to fade, even if the dynamics of it had changed.
