Rapids was drilling in the evening, so they weren't busy when the
humming began. K'ran headed back to his weyr, picked out a nice tunic
and pair of pants, and changed into them. Then he threw a riding coat
over to stave off the cold of /between/, before going to the ledge and
strapping up Rogueth.

The bronze was surprised as he started being strapped up, as he had
been expecting to just go witness the Hatching and not to leave.

**We are getting Jayzine,** K'ran told his bronze as he mounted up.

Rogueth beat his wings a few times to gain height from the ledge
before taking K'ran's visual and blinking /between/ to Emerald Falls
Hold. He spiraled down for a landing. K'ran dismounted and nodded at
the guard who'd come out to see what was going on.

"Wingleader K'ran is here to pick up Headwoman Jayzine for the
hatching," K'ran explained.

"I'll go get her," the guard said, taking in his knots and attire and
rushing off to go find the Headwoman.

Jayzine had prepared in advance knowing the Hatching could happen so
when the guard arrived she nodded and told him to let the Wingleader
know she'd be right down. She quickly dressed in the gown she'd
prepared for the event and smiled at her reflection before pulling her
cloak from it's peg and hurrying to the front door. "K'ran," she
smiled when she saw him there.

"Jayzine, I was hoping you'd be able to go," the bronzerider said,
bowing. "Shall I assist you in mounting, or will you be all right?"

"Please," she said. "I haven't been on a dragon but about three times.
My duty to you Rogueth," she said as she approached.

Rogueth made a pleased whuff at Jayzine. Then he hunkered down to make
sure there was plenty of ease for her to mount.

K'ran helped Jayzine mount, careful to be very respectful as he helped
her up. Once they were seated, he said, "Ready to between?"

"Ready," she said as she wrapped her arms around his waist and steeled
herself for the blackness.

Rogueth gained the right height, K'ran pictured the Weyrbowl, and they
went /between/.

Re-emerging into the air and brightness was a relief, even if it was a
bit shocking to emerge into the warmer air at Dolphin Cove compared to
what it had been at the Hold. Rogueth dodged the other dragons and
then he was spiraling in for a landing. K'ran dismounted first and
helped Jayzine down.

"Here we are, and the humming's still happening. We've got time for
the good seats still."

Her eyes glowed, she was actually going to be a guest at the hatching.
"Which way," she said and started following the crowd.

He kept a hand on her elbow as they headed along with the crowd and to
the Hatching Caverns. By virtue of his rank knots, he was able to help
them find a good pair of seats.

"There's a few of our River Bluff girls here. Maybe one of them will
Impress to the gold," he said, feeling possessive of those candidates.

"What wonderful seats," she smiled up at him. Looking around she saw
familiar faces peppered through the crowd. Catching eyes here and
there she smiled and waived. "This is so great," she tucked her hand
into K'ran's elbow as the candidates filed in and the eggs began to
rock.

"Yes, we're very lucky," the bronzerider agreed. He scanned the crowd,
noting how busy the cavern seemed compared to prior memories of his
time here. Was it just that there were more people at Dolphin Cove
with the addition of the River Bluff wing (and the lower caverns
staff, and their families)? Was it that there'd been more Searching to
find good candidates for the gold egg?

He recognized a few of the candidates below. "Oh look, there's a few
of ours - River Bluff ones, I mean," he said.

"This cavern is huge," Jayzine observed as she gazed around. It was
big enough for multiple clutches. She refocused on the candidates and
could pick out several that she knew. "Oh yes," she nodded. "I'm so
glad they still get their chance."

"It is huge and yet I've never seen more than one clutch on here at
the same time," K'ran mused. The bronzerider had meant to say more,
but the first egg cracked open and spilled out a little blue and he
got distracted by that. Triggered buy that first one, more eggs began
to split and make their way to Candidates.

A wobbling little brown dragonet made his way across the Sands to
Raiturik. He'd just Turned 20 and had been afriad that last clutch at
the Bluff would be his last chance, so K'ran was happy for him.
Rogueth helpfully provided him with the name.

"He's R'urik and the brown's Surmiath."

"He's a good young man," Jayzine nodded. "Hard worker with a good head
on his shoulders. I guess brown makes sense," she smiled at K'ran.

"I'm glad for him. Maybe I'll tap him for Rapids when the time comes."
It would depend on what his wing needed. He didn't want to be
favoritist with the River Bluff people, but he always seemed to need
browns and greens.

"Oh," she said as a pretty little green bumped into a girl in front of
them. "Isn't that Famera? She's only just thirteen."

"She'll be in the weyrlingmaster's wing awhile then, but good for her
to Impress, she won't have to wait," he said with a smile.

The gold egg was rocking more heavily and he looked at the people
surrounding it. There were a few girls from River Bluff there. "Oh,
look, she's going to be beautiful."

A hand rose to Jayzine's mouth as she watched. She hadn't been able to
actually see the last gold hatch at Riverbluff so this was a very
unique experience. Soon the Impression was made and she cheered madly
with the rest of the crowd as the new gold pair were led off the
Sands. "That was amazing," she glowed.

"Impression is a special moment for everyone, but golds seem so much
so. I suppose as a bronzerider I have a reason to value it..."

"Of course you do," she smiled and bumped her shoulder against him
lightly. "And you always will."

"It's funny how our dragon's desires wind up blending into our own. A
bit hard to explain or understand sometimes. Rogueth's interested in
chasing golds, it's what bronzes do, but I always used to be
uncomfortable around goldriders."

She wouldn't ever know how that worked other than by his words or the
explanation of others, of course. "I'll take your word for it," she
said. "But I've always found them good hard workers."

"Oh, they certainly are. The Weyr couldn't survive without them - not
just because of clutching but because without the Weyrwoman I'm sure
the Lower Caverns would have a hard time running," he added, in case
she thought he was being inadvertently insulting. "But they just have
such an aura of authority, it's a bit intimidating,"

"Is that why?" She put a hand on his arm. "I'd imagine that part to be
their lifemate. Which you would feel, of course, and I would not." She
looked up at the Senior Weyrwoman and her 'Leader. "They look a very
competent pair."

"Oh, they are. It was why I was happy to bring Rapids here, afterwards
- I know I came to River Bluff from Dragonsfall, but I spent two Turns
here at Dolphin Cove. Served under a few different Weyrwoman. Cyradis
has stayed longer than the others, and N'vanik - well he's a far
better Weyrleader than anyone would have expected. It's a good Weyr. I
wish you were here, though I imagine you're finding joy in your work
at Emerald Falls?"

She looked up into his eyes. It was funny really that while seated he
was so much taller than she yet when they were standing they were
almost of a height. "I do like Emerald Falls," she said. "But it's a
Hold and different from the Weyr." She searched his eyes for a deeper
meaning and found she couldn't really tell. "I would like to come back
to the Weyr at some point."

He could understand after being the main Headwoman, that the idea of
being only an assistant to the current one at Dolphin Cove would be a
disappointment. And yet he wished she'd taken the demotion so he could
have someone else he knew nearby.

**She must be happy at Emerald Falls, doing work she's good at,** he
told himself, and wondered why he was thinking so selfishly.

"If I hear of something that suits you, I'll let you know," he said.

"Thank you," she said sincerely. Then she realized the people around
her were rising from their seats. The hatching was over and she'd been
more engrossed in their conversation than she had been in watching the
baby dragons. No, she hadn't felt this kind of interest in any man
since before Miyon. Perhaps the Weyr was rubbing off on her after all.

He hadn't realized they'd missed the last few Impressions. "We'll find
out who the last to Impress were at the feast. Would you do the honor
of dining with me there?" he asked.

"I would be very happy to," she smiled gently. Her gaze never left his eyes.
