Description: Brennault meets Tsogath!
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 9 of Turn 9
"If Tsogath sees something, you could decide for yourself if you want
to confirm with a Searcher," A'vel said, starting to walk towards a
free patch of ground where Tsogath could land and take a look.
"And you know, you could try talking to the Weyrwoman yourself. I
mean, are you assigned as a runner here for now, or just staying here
while passing through?"
A'vel mused, considering whether the runner would fit the definition
of 'a weyr resident', who only needed to petition.
Brennault followed beside A'vel with the pep of excited curiosity in
his step. "I'm assigned here – this is considered my home station. For
now, at least," he said. "But my father's station was home for me for
the last nineteen Turns, so 'for now' could wind up a very long time."
He peered about, trying to guess which if any of the dragons he could
spot were Tsogath.
"Still, it would be good to know whether I'm any good for it if I do
decide to try it," he said. "No use wasting anybody's time."
"I hope you like classes, because there's so many of them Candidates
have to do," A'vel said. "I like learning things, it's part of why I'm
a Harper. I bet you'd do fine with all of the physical exercise
classes, since you're a runner. You have to be in great shape," he
assumed.
"Classes aren't my favorite," said Brennault. He really did not enjoy
being cooped up and still for so long. "I don't mind the learning, but
the sitting still isn't great. I'm in pretty decent shape if I do say
so myself." He grinnned.
Tsogath was the grass-green dragon that A'vel led them to. She was
lounging on a low ledge that was currently unoccupied. As Brennault
and her rider came over, she lowered her head and slowly blinked at
them, her eyes whirling a contented blue-green.
"This is Tsogath," A'vel said proudly, gesturing at her.
Brennault had seen dragons, of course, but this was the closest he had
ever gotten to one. Never this close before. He was momentarily
breathless.
"She's beautiful," he managed to say. "Hello," he said to her. He was
not sure just how much dragons really understood, but he spoke to most
animals as though they understood. "Aren't you such a pretty girl?"
Tsogath was curious about the human her rider had spent a candlemark
talking to, and this human was nice already. He was speaking right to
her and he seemed interested. She liked that. The green stretched her
neck so her muzzle approached close to Brennault.
"She wants you to pet her. You can pat the top of her muzzle or
scratch about her eye ridges," A'vel translated.
Brennault was positively thrilled. He already wanted to touch her, but
to receive an invitation! He leaned in and heartily scratched above
her eye. "Awww, you are a sweetheart, aren't you?"
"I'm Brennault," he introduced himself, "and I am so happy to meet you!"
}:That is a good scratch,:{ Tsogath told her rider approvingly.
"She says she likes the scratch. She doesn't need to be touched
delicately, her hide is strong," he said.
Brennault smiled and gave Tsogath a bit more gusto for her scratch.
"Well, you can come to me for scratchies any time you like," he
promised, adding a muzzle pat for good measure.
The green dragon let out a pleased crooning noise and whuffed in
contentment, sending a wave of hot air out and over Brennault. }:He is
very bright,:{ she said.
**Bright how? Like smart?**
}:A bright mind,:{ she said, but couldn't clarify more than that.
"She finds something interesting about you," A'vel relayed. "But she
doesn't have exact words."
Brennault was, as they say, pleased as punch. Everyone who had ever
had the pleasure of spending at least a little time around dragons
surely must have learned to regard their approval as something really,
very special.
"Well, I find you beautifully, wonderfully interesting, too, sweet
girl!" he said to Tsogath. He smiled to A'vel. "Is everyone so lucky
as you when it comes to their dragon?"
"To have such a wonderful lifemate? I certainly hope so, for their
sake. She's changed everything about my life for the better," A'vel
said, reaching out to touch a part of her hide Brennault wasn't. A
smile spread over his face he wasn't conscious of. Thinking about
Impression was just like that for riders.
}:Are you going to wash me?:{ Tsogath asked hopefully.
"She says she wants a bath, so I should probably let you go get
settled in," A'vel said.
"If the two of you don't mind, could I give you a hand?" If he was going to consider riding dragon, he needed to know exactly how much work it was going to entail. Well, as much as he could, anyway. One could not very easily practice fighting Thread on someone else's dragon.
"I understand if you're ready for me to take a hike, though." He winked.
"No, you're welcome to help out," A'vel said. "I just thought you might want to do other things 'round the Weyr and meet other folks."
He didn't _need_ the help in the way that riders of the bigger dragons did. Tsogath was a reasonably small size. But that didn't mean that he didn't appreciate the chance to have another pair of hands.
"Oh, there's plenty of time for all that," said Brennault, cheerfully rubbing Tsogath's hide again. "All right. I'll fetch your soap and... scrub brushes?" He found he was not sure what exactly went into this. "Where do we keep 'em?"
"Scrubbing stuff's kept in a small storage area by the lake. Come on and I'll show you," A'vel said, leading the way.
