Saidrene

Saidrene

F'lin hadn't felt much like socializing since he'd arrived at Dolphin Cove Weyr, but the needs of the body trumped that of the mind. He found himself walking into the Dining Cavern after drills, searching for familiar faces and finding far too few. He started across the room to the line for food, and hurried his steps to catch up to a familiar black-haired woman picking up a plate. Saidrene. Someone he actually knew, and wouldn't mind spending some time with. "Care for company?" he asked as he sidled up behind her.

Saidrene cast a glance over her shoulder, and then smiled when she recognized the bronzerider, "F'lin, where have you been hiding? I almost worried you'd shipped off to Dragonsfall." She took up a spoonful of boiled greens and deposited them on her plate.

He shook his head. "No, just settling Rapids Wing and the other dragonriders from home. It's been a long few sevendays." Which was an understatement. He reached for the spoon that Saidrene had used and served himself some greens he didn't feel much like eating.

"You should come out and have fun then, take away some of that tension." It was practically emanating from the bronzerider. Saidrene had become a master at hiding from her real emotions by choosing to have fun, especially with the awkward and rocky friendships she had with J'ackt and Alina. It worked... most of the time.

The bronzerider managed a crooked smile. "Maybe once things even out some, you can show me around. What do people do here, anyway?"

"Well, there's the beach, of course, and," she leaned toward him and spoke out of the side of her mouth, "I look great in a bathing suit." She placed a thick cut of meat on her plate and added a roll to the side. "There's also fishing, runner riding, and a good alehouse not far away."

"You make the beach sound good." It wasn't the beach at River Bluff, though. F'lin felt a pang as he added a slice of meat to his plate. He skipped the roll. "What do _you_ like to do?"

"I enjoy swimming with Ashareth, and I fish. My da used to take me when I lived at Far Island. Swimming is fun, but fishing is relaxing... When Ashareth remains hidden like she's suppose to and doesn't scare all the fish away." At the end of the tables Saidrene balanced her plate in her left hand so she could pick up a cup of klah.

"Saidrene, the fishing greenrider. Practicing for when the Pass ends?" F'lin said lightly.

Saidrene rapped her knuckles on the table, "If I make it till then, why not? I am positive I can figger' a way to attach a net to Ashareth and fish."

"That I'd like to see." He shook his head. "My Da was a fisherman. It's not an easy life if you don't have a dragon, but he liked it well enough."

The greenrider nodded, "I imagine it's not." Saidrene glanced over at F'lin, "So I guess you've heard that Lanniya is leaving?" The news was so recent that it hadn't made it very far in the gossip rounds yet, she'd heard it rather early, from her mother since the young goldrider would be moving to Dragonsfall.

"Yeah." He looked down at his place. "She told me. I suppose your mother's looking forward to having her?"

The greenrider lifted her shoulders, "Yes and no. My mom is... thirty-seven? And her 'second is only a few Turns older than me and Lanniya is a teenager still. I think she was hoping for another experienced goldrider, to be honest."

"Didn't the other Weyrs offer anyone else?" F'lin asked.

"I think it was more a matter of Dolphin Cove not needing a fourth gold. They can't kick out whoever Impresses the latest gold egg on the Sands, and Cyradis needs an experienced 'second like Kapera, so that leaves Lanniya being the one asked to leave. Dragonsfall has familiar people, Lanniya's boyfriend guy, and the space, it became the natural choice. I don't think my mother could have reasonably said no." Saidrene was glad to be a greenrider and not have to worry about politics.

Not boyfriend... **Weyrmate.** F'lin felt a twinge of guilt, which he tried his best to bury. "Fair enough. But Dragonsfall's not for you, not even with your mother there?"

Finding out she was related to J'ackt had made her consider moving to Dragonsfall, but not her mother. "No, it's not for me. Me and my mother have a better relationship this way. I'm sure she'd rather have me there, but I like having a little space. Maybe someday down the road I will want to live in the same Weyr as her again. Right now though, Dolphin Cove is my home. What about you? Think you'll stick around or do you foresee a change in locations down the road?"

F'lin sighed. "Depends if River Bluff ever gets opened again. But for now... I'll stay where my Wing is."

Saidrene wondered if people really thought that would happen. From the gossip of how bad things had been how could they ever go back and inhabit those old ruins?

"Hey, I am your Wing now," she gave him a little salute, "Wingsecond."

"Which is exactly why I'm staying put." F'lin smiled at her. "Can't leave my greenriders lonely."

"That's right, what would we do without you to look after us?" she said with a teasing tilt of her head.

"Probably get into trouble." He gave her a crooked half-smile. "And I'm very sure you'd do your part."

Saidrene's laugh was a little dry, "Oh, I am very good at finding trouble, if not making it."

"Which is why I'll keep my eye on you." And maybe also because the greenrider was pretty and fun, and F'lin could use a dose of light-heartedness every so often.
