Description: Y'gel gives Rogueth the clearance to start flying again.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 1 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik, K'lvin, Panitath,
K'ran was relieved that it was time for Rogueth's next follow-up
appointment. Being grounded for the past month and a half had been so
wearying to him. It had been frustrating on a personal level, and he
was worried about how it had been affecting his wing. If Rogueth was
finally going to be cleared to fly again, it would solve a lot of both
of their problems.
Rogueth had slowly made his way to the area of the dragonhealers'
infirmary. Now he waited alongside his bronze for his appointment,
knowing they were running early.
Y'gel grinned as he strode across the cavern toward the bronze pair.
"Good thing you're early," he nodded. "I was going to call and see if
you could come." He pointed toward the side where there was a bronze
sized couch. "Right over there if you don't mind."
The bronze obligingly shuffled to the couch. Grounded dragons were
never really graceful, and wounded ones were even more lumbering, but
Rogueth was moving better now than he had right after the accident.
"I wanted to give Rogueth extra time to get here if he needed it.
Also, I was a little impatient," K'ran confessed. He knew Y'gel would
understand that feeling.
"And no wonder," Y'gel nodded. "A fighting dragon on the ground is not
doing his job and that is very hard. For you both I'd imagine." He
put a hand on K'ran's shoulder. "Let's take a look," he said and
walked over to where Rogueth lay.
His deft hands knew the injury and he felt the area of the break.
Dragon bones knitted quickly and he could tell this was almost healed.
He stepped back and smiled at both of them.
"It feels like it's almost healed. I'd say you could begin some flying
and /between/ shouldn't be an issue since there are no open wounds."
He held up a finger. "Be very careful on the landings though. Extra
backwinging would be good for a very gentle touchdown. Practice take
off and landing in the bowl before you actually go back into drills.
Alright?"
Rogueth held himself very still as the Weyrdragonhealer felt his way
along the bronze's leg. His eyes were whirling quickly as he and his
rider waited to heal the results. The moment of injury was fading from
his mind but the pain of it had taken longer to forget, and the
frustration of being grounded was the worst part of all. Every time
the Wings rose and Thread fell the bronze was agitated.
"You hear that? I guess all of that swimming in the sea to strengthen
it without putting weight on it did some good," K'ran said to his
bronze with a smile.
He nodded at Y'gel's advising. "If we're clear to /between/, would
regular flying to a few new locations count as practicing for a few
days before rejoining the drills? I'd like to refresh myself on the
visuals of major points in the territory."
Dragonriders remembered the critical reference points drilled into
them, of course, and they had an overview of their whole continent.
K'ran had served at Dolphin Cove before, but he'd been at two other
Weyrs since then and he wanted to make sure that he knew where he was
going to be flying over.
(And he had particular visits he'd like to make now that he didn't
need to borrow a ride.)
Y'gel nodded. "Yes, just pay attention and if Rogueth feels tired,
rest." Of course a bronze would try and put his energy but they
needed to make sure he didn't take it too fast. "Come back in a few
days and we'll see if he can go back to drills."
"I won't let him overtire. Though I know he'll try," K'ran said.
Rogueth had chased Panitath when she Rose, compelled by the attraction
of a gold in her glory. The effort had been very tiring and K'ran had
brought him in the next day for a once-over to make sure it hadn't set
him back.
Y'gel chuckled. "Of course he'll try," he said. "He's bronze and in his
prime."
"He'll be eager to lead the Wing again, I know. It's been hard for him
to be at a new Weyr and not in charge of it, I didn't realize he'd get
used to it so fast. But I'll keep a hand on him."
Once again he nodded in agreement. "My Aughashyth has never believed
he was any less than other bronzes despite his injury. A fact he
proved to himself and me when he won gold." He shrugged. "Rogueth will
recover completely, just don't let him rush it."
"I'm glad. I was worried the break would go bad or heal bad.
Especially since he'd already had a bit of an injury from his days in
the egg."
"I could understand that worry," he nodded. "But he'll be fine. You
heal up too and before you know it you'll be back leading your wing."
"Speaking of the wing, actually. How's Ihlath?" The young green had
been scored in the last Threadfall, taking a tangle across the
hindlimbs and tail.
"Mostly flesh injury though I did have to dig into her tail to get
some fragments that burrowed. She'll not /between/ until that part is
healed." Y'gel's concern for the young green was evident. "But I
believe she'll recover well." He nodded. "I have another question
though," he started. "About K'lvin. Do you know him well?"
"I'm sorry to hear she's grounded for now, but it's good she's not
losing anything." It was always a shame when young dragons were
wounded.
"We worked together a fair bit as Wingleader and Weyrleader. I'd say I
worked with him more than many other River Bluff riders." Seven months
hadn't really been long enough to know too many people too well.
Y'gel knew the subject might be a little premature but K'ran had been
his Weyrleader and they'd had a good working relationship. While he
knew N'vanik on a personal level, they'd not yet become fully working
partners. "I hear his illness," he didn't know if that was quite the
right way to discuss a heart condition. "May keep him from Threadfall
in the future. But I also know he's a dragonhealer. He and Xmrenth
could be of great assistance here. I'd like to approach him if you
think it's appropriate."
K'ran knew that not everyone had gotten a full set of assignments yet.
With a whole Wing's worth of riders and a number of support staff,
people were still being slotted into duty rotations. He knew in
general what retired riders did, but not exactly what they'd deemed
K'lvin capable of doing for now.
"Approach him for what, working with you full time?" he asked. "Has he
been doing any shifts with you yet?"
Y'gel shook his head. "Oh no," he said. "His hands were full with his
wing at Riverbluff but he did know his way around my reports on his
riders and asked very intelligent questions that only a dragonhealer
might think of. I looked in his records and he's a Journeyman. His
skills could be valuable."
"I would talk with him about working for you now, then," K'ran said.
"It sounds like he'd be useful and another bronze to calm the injured
would be useful, right?"
"Very," Y'gel smiled. "I'll have to see how receptive he is to a part
time job." Then he put a hand ot K'ran's shoulder. "Take care of
yourself. I don't want to see you back in here with some sort of
stress injury." He turned his look on the big bronze. "You either," he
said.
