Characters: V'rel, Dessa
Description: Vatirel introduces himself to Dessa.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 10 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: L'pin

Vatirel was heading out of the boy's side of the barracks when he saw a
new face just emerging from the girl's side. **A new person!** He
wondered if they were a new Search or a River Bluff arrival.

"I'm Vatirel," he said, smiling at her. "And you are?"

"Hello, I'm Dessa, pleased to meet you," she replied with polite bob
of her head. She had just gotten her things unpacked after arriving
from Emerald Falls Hold.

He noticed the bob and decided not to offer his hand. "You look
familiar. Have you been here a few days?"

"No, I just arrived. But I was here when the Harper Hall was stationed
here. You might have seen me then," Dessa replied. "While I mostly
kept to the Hall's part of the Weyr, I did learn to love the beach."
She smiled a little. She had never really swam before the Hall moved
to Dolphin Cove. It had been one of the things she had missed when the
Hall re-moved back to the Emerald Falls Hold.

"Maybe I saw you around then. So you're a Harper. So is our
Weyrlingmaster's Third, you should chat with him. There always seem to
be a few as Candidates," he added.

"Yes, I am," Dessa confirmed. "I keep them in mind, I've yet to meet
him," she continued. "How about you? Are you Searched candidate or
from Weyr? Do you have a craft?"

"I'm Weyrbred, and a Weaver. If you need clothing help, come to me," he
boasted.

Dessa looked her outfit. There was nothing wrong with her tunic but
the trousers she wore had belonged to her brother (skirts would have
been impractical for the dragon ride). They were too big and baggy.
"You know how to make trousers that fit and look good on me?" she
asked. Her mother had taught her to dress well, she was supposed to
look elegant.

"I could tailor a pair to fit how you'd like. Do you want something
that's functional and doesn't get in the way because it's too baggy or
too long? Something that might accentuate any assets?"

"Yes, some thing practical and pretty," Dessa replied. "I'm supposed
to look good," she continued with a slight shrug. "These I got from my
brother and they gave my mother a fit," she pointed her current
trousers.

Vatirel pursed his lips as he looked over her outfit. They weren't
fitting quite right, it was true. She was very slender, and the men's
trouser cut didn't flatter her at all. "For the pair you're wearing,
I'd bring it in around the waist to accentuate what you have there,
and hem it up a little further so it doesn't drag if you're wearing
anything other then boots. If I was designing something from scratch,
I'd do one of two things with the leg. A narrower cut would show off
how slender you are. Or I could do a straighter cut to make it look
like you're a little broader."

"I would take the narrow cut," Dessa replied after a moment of
consideration. "So, how much would that cost me?" she asked.

"If you're willing to come model the pants for my Master, I'd do it
for a 32nd mark," he said. Then realizing it sounded sketchy, he
elaborated. "I'm still working on clothing so I can progress. Showing
that I can draft a new pattern and put it together and make it work on
a person would go a long way to helping aim for journeyman."

Professional ambition, now that was a motive Dessa could undestand and
relate. "That sounds reasonable, you got yourself a deal," she replied
with a half-smile.

"Excellent," he said, grinning at her. He loved when he could help
someone out and benefit himself at the same time. "Can't promise I can
get them done before the clutching, but certainly before the
hatching."

"That's alright," Dessa replied. "I'll made do until then."

"I'd be happy to take your measurements whenever you have time. Do you
know what your schedule is yet? I mean I know you'll be in classes
with us, not that those are very often right now since the clutch
isn't laid yet, but you might be assigned to craft or chore work at
different times."

"Yes, I have a schedule already," Dessa replied. "I've got mostly
candidate classes and craft duties."

"Then I'll be seeing you around classes. Don't worry, they're not all
terrible," he said. "Say, where were you heading off to?"

"To grab a bite and then to report to the Weyrharper," Dessa answered.

"Well, I can't help you with the latter, but want company for your meal?"

"You're welcome to join me," Dessa said with friendly tone. He seemed
like a nice guy and she needed to start getting to know people. Building
a network of connections was what harpers did. Getting friends wouldn't
hurt either.

"Neat," he said with a grin. "And I'll catch you up on stuff you should
know about the weyrlingstaff before you get thrown into lessons, and..."
