Characters: Briata, Talryne
Description: Briata meets Talryne in the weaver room.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik, Y'gel
Talryne took a deep breath and leaned back to study her work. It
wasn't exactly how she'd pictured it in her head but it was coming
along nicely. Movement caught her attention and she looked up. "Do you
need anything?" She didn't recognize the woman.
"I was just taking a look at the facilities," Briata smiled. "I'm
Briata by the way." She held out her hand to the other woman.
"Oh." Talryne blinked. "You're Nisha's fostermother." It took her a
moment to remember to take Briata's hand. "I'm Talryne."
"Oh yes," she understood immediately and resolved not talking about
dragons. The other woman might not be Weyrmated to N'vanik but she was
around enough that Nisha knew her. "Y'gel and I have moved here
permanently I hope. What are you making?"
"It's a scene of dolphins playing in the waves." The tapestry wasn't
half done yet so it was hard to tell what it was supposed to be.
"Oh that sounds lovely," she smiled. "I've never done tapestry, but I
can weave some very lovely cloth." She didn't need to brag about all
the various pieces she'd made for Rhosyn over the turns. Again, that
wouldn't probably go over very well and she'd like to be friends or at
least friendly with this woman.
"Is clothweaving your specialty then?" N'vanik had described Briata as
gentle, steady, nurturing. Although Talryne hadn't met her before, she
felt like she knew Briata, at least a little, and that made her easier
to talk to.
"I design and construct too," she smiled secretively. "Some things the
men like to see from time to time."
It took a moment for Talryne to catch on. "Oh, you mean bedroom wear?"
"Yes," Briata said and nodded slowly. "And on another note, I do knit
a lot of socks."
"There does seem to be a lot of demand for socks, even in hot places."
People still needed to wear them under boots for one thing.
"Yes," she smiled. "Y'gel always tells me that his feet get cold
/between/ when he doesn't have a good wool pair on his feet. Hey, what
colors of dyes do you have locally?"
"We have all kinds. It's a benefit of having the Weaver Hall in our territory."
Briata's eyes lit up. "Oh that is great news. I often had to get one
of the journeymen to work on specific dyes for something someone
wanted made." She did see others around working on various projects
and with materials she'd rarely seen at Riverbluff.
"Of course if someone is particular about an exact shade you'd still
have to get a customized dye made." Talryne absently fiddled with a
bit of thread. "But we do have a wide variety." The Hall usually gave
them a small batch of whatever they mixed up for themselves.
"I was thinking that Nisha should give her dada a Turns End present,"
Briata said carefully. "She is awfully fond of red. So, what do you
think if I were to knit him a pair of red socks. Do you think he'd
like that?"
"Oh he'd _love_ that." It was no secret that N'vanik adored his young
daughter and he'd be thrilled with anything from her, even it was
really "from" Briata.
"Well then," she smiled. "We should dye some yarn and let Nisha pick
which one to give her dada."
