Y'gel

"That sneaky little...so and so!" Lanniya burst out of bed just as she
had gotten comfortable and had almost dozed off. Her hair already
mussed and her eyes groggy, she stumbled into her slippers. **You
could have warned me before now!**

Anaeryth just made a mental grunt before demanding that Lanniya hurry
it along. Lightly clad in just a sleep shirt and shorts, she rubbed
her eyes. **Aughasyth, it's happening.**

}:Yes, we come:{ the big bronze replied.

Y'gel hadn't quite gone to his bed though he'd had a long day with the
Dragonhealing team here at Dolphin Cove. So he leaned over from where
he sat and picked up his bag. Then he made a stop in the kitchen for
a pitcher of hot Klah and some left over bubblies. When he told the
kitchen drudge the clutch was coming she went running to find a cook
to make some fresh ones.

"Can I come in?" he called from the doorway.

Though Anaeryth had demanded Aughashyth's presence, she didn't greet
him with warmth. Instead she gave a soft hiss, warning him away from
getting too close to the Sands. The gold hunkered down and gave a
soft grunt and squirm, wrinkling her nose as she deposited a rather
large egg on the sands.

"Come in." Lanniya appeared, blinking sleepily. "She's already started."

Aughashyth hovered near the entrance to the grounds ready to chase
anyone away should they think they could enter or watch. He crooned to
her, praising her strength and beauty. }:I will keep all away from you
beautiful Anaeryth.:{

Y'gel smiled as he walked toward where Lanniya sat. His hands were
full with a tray and his medical bag was slung over his shoulder just
in case. "How is she feeling so far?"

Lanniya saw the klah on the tray and she went after it like a flit for
a meatroll. Normally she didn't like the bitter beverage, but thought
of it drove her to take a long sip. "Thank you..." She sighed
gratefully and took another sip before she answered him. "She says she
feels full and she wants them all out." She spun as Anaeryth grunted
and her jaw went slack in amazement.

It was an odd feeling, watching Anaeryth deposit that first egg;
warmth and pride, but also the weight of the responsibility now on her
shoulders. Those eggs would hold dragons that she might fly with some
day. Some Candidate would Impress the dragon that her own had created.
Her hands trembled, but her eyes never wavered from the sight of that
egg, even as Anaeryth moved to begin laying another nearby. "Oh my."
She swallowed, her eyes wide. "I..it's beautiful, but it's scary too,
Y'gel."

"It's also a very nice size," Y'gel smiled in reassurance. "I've seen
lots of eggs and these are good, especially for a first clutch."

Lanniya's eyes stayed wide. "So she's doing a good job so far?" She
moved close to Y'gel and took the man's hand, clutching his fingers
tightly. "Look! Another one! It's not as big but it's still not small
either."

"Yes," he squeezed her little hand and smiled. The dimple in his cheek
became much more pronounced, as did the twinkle in his eyes. "She's
doing very well. I think she's a natural."

"And Aug feels like he's about to just burst with pride too." Her eyes
gleamed as she turned to look at Y'gel. "It's amazing. I mean, I know
it's going to take a while, but I don't want to miss any of them."

"Absolutely," he agreed. "They will all be important to this Weyr in
the next few Turns." He watched her as she turned and scooped a new
depression in the vast sands. "You know I think there could be as many
as three clutches in here at the same time. This place is huge."

}: Absolutely not. This is _MY_ place. :{ Anaeryth eyed Y'gel and then
settled back down.

Lanniya glanced at him and coughed. "She disagrees most sincerely."
She kept a hold on his hand. "I'm glad, Y'gel. I'm glad it was you."
She turned to look up at him and her gaze was warm.

Y'gel chuckled, "I was fairly sure she would." Then at her other
statement he looked down at her warmly and patted her hand with his
other one. "I'm very glad too."

}: Me too,:{ Aughasyth contributed as he watched his mate avidly his
head on a swivel to observe both his eggs, his mate and the area
around the entrance. No one was getting around him to sneak a peak.

She waited with Y'gel, sipping the klah and sometimes grimacing at the
bitterness, but drinking it none the less. After a while, it became
almost routine, a soft grunt and a squirm and an egg was deposited.
Only one time did Lanniya worry, when Anaeryth seemed to be having
particular trouble with one egg, but before she could voice her
concern, a large egg was deposited. The time passed quickly for
Lanniya, but even she leaned a little on Y'gel for support and in
sleepiness as the time wore on.

After a time, Anaeryth didn't dig another furrow and instead of
continuing, wrapped her body protectively around the eggs and covered
them with a possessive wing. Lanniya sat up and stretched, then rose.
"Twenty five." She breathed. "She laid twenty five!"

"She's done then," he confirmed. "That is a good number for a first
clutch. With a younger bronze she'd like as not have been in the
teens. "I need to examine her just to be sure she's not ichoring or
needing any stitches after that big one. See if she'll let me examine
her briefly."

Anaeryth's eyes immediately narrowed at the suggestion and her wing
seemed to tighten over the eggs. A low tremble of a growl emerged and
her eyes flickered red for just a moment. }: Mine. They are _MY_ eggs.
He can not come to them. :{

"Uhm..." Lanniya glanced at Y'gel. **He has to check you to make sure that...**

}: No. My eggs. :{

**He's not going to steal your eggs.**

}: No. :{ Anaeryth glared at the pair of them, her tail twitching.

}: Please beautiful Anaeryth,:{ Aughasyth warbled. }:Mine doesn't want
to see our beautiful eggs, keep them covered. He wished to examine you
for damage. He is your favorite healer.:{ He sent her an image of
lifting her tail but keeping the eggs secure behind the veil of her
wings.

Anaeryth grumbled audibly at Aughashyth and kept her baleful glare on
Y'gel as she huffed and twitched the tip of her tail. The large gold
visibly curled her lips in displeasure and huffed again, even more
loudly. }: No eggs. He can't see them. They're mine. :{

Lanniya looked at Y'gel and cleared her throat. "She think's you're
going to look at her eggs. Aug and I are talking to her." She frowned
and looked back at her gold. **He has to check you and he's not going
to look at your eggs. Now stop being silly.**

Glaring with hints of red in her eye, Anaeryth finally moved her tail
just enough to allow Y'gel to look at her.

Y'gel clenched his jaw to prevent any smile. He'd had contact with his
share of petulant queens in the past but the first clutch of a young
queen could set the stage for her entire life. So he turned his head
away from the queen with his hand to the side of his eyes so he
wouldn't appear to try and look at the eggs. They were indeed very
tender and fragile at this stage and he didn't want to upset Anaeryth
any more than was necessary.

Carrying his bag with him he knelt behind her haunch with his back to
the eggs while he checked her cloaca. Other than a small tear from the
large egg he couldn't see or feel any issues. He'd waited almost a
full candlemark so no more eggs were coming. The tear had already
ceased to ichor and wasn't large enough to require any stitches so he
simply wiped a bit of redwort over the area mixed with a little
numbweed.

The entire time Y'gel was on the Sands near her and the eggs, a clear
rumble of warning issued from Anaeryth's throat, even with the
bronzeriders' consideration of her. Her eyes never left him for a
moment while he worked or even when she twitched at the touch of
redwort. She settled as he moved away, but continued watching him
until he was near Lanniya again. She curled her tail back around her
clutch and settled into the sands even deeper, refusing to budge any
further.

"I'm sure they told you but she'll likely be very protective and
prickly until the eggs harden. Aug will bring her food as she needs
it. But I bet you'll hear all of that." Looking at her he realized how
tired she was. "Hey, you need some sleep. Is she going to let you go
lay down or do I need to have them bring you some bedding?"

She nodded; they had told her. She just hadn't expected Anaeryth to be
as possessive. Her dragon was normally far more agreeable. "I am
tired." Lanniya rubbed her eyes. "Could you have them bring me some
blankets? She doesn't want me to go anywhere."

"Sure," he said. "Do you want me to stay with you or..." his voice
trailed off. He was here to support her in any way she needed. The
poor girl had been through so much and he felt very protective like he
did with his own daughter.

Looking up at him, she chewed on her lower lip. "You don't mind?"

"Not at all," he said. He walked toward the entrance and was met by
some of the kitchen staff. Before long he had the bedding and had been
pointed to the area that could be prepared for them to sleep. Furs
were spread quickly and he turned back to see her already asleep
cramped in the seat. He shook his head and scooped her up. Then he
went back to the pallet he'd put together and laid her gently on the
furs. Then he lad down beside her and pulled the light cover over
them. Moments later he too was asleep.

The moment Y'gel laid beside her, Lanniya curled up to him like a
kitten, buried her head against his chest and fell into deeper
slumber.
