Genna

Genna

"I would rather be sitting in my weyr, next to a fire, wrapped in a blanket and hot drink in my hands," Aileyan murmured and shivered. It was cold outside and snowing. Yesterday they had a blizzard, so everything was covered by white. The cold and snow meant that Thread was freezing too. There was still sweepriders out there, making sure the Thread was really dead when it fell and to warn them if weather suddenly changed. Rest of them just waited, in their riding gear, in case they were needed.

"I hear ya," Genna agreed wholeheartedly, shivering just the same. "I'm sure they'll bring out some hot klah soon, though, 'cause we won't be much good to anyone frozen solid." If no one thought of that, she'd be sure to have Lissath pass on an innocent suggestion somewhere. "You know, for a moment when they said it'd be too cold for Thread, I was delighted. I didn't stop to think it meant sitting around waiting for the weather to turn."

Aileyan agreed with her with some wordless murmurs. "You would think you get used to this," Aileyan said with a nod and pointed towards the sky and falling snow. "Of course, it sometimes snows in Emerald Falls Hold too, but never this _much_." At least she couldn't rememer it snowing this much there. Most snow in Emerald Falls had turned into a slush very quickly.

"I was born in this climate and I never got used to it," Genna replied with a sigh. "I mean, I love snow, when you have time to go outside for a walk or play with it. But when you're just sitting around in the cold, waiting... Ah well, there are worse things. At least there shouldn't be any injuries this Fall."

"Well, there's that. I don't evy those who are doing the sweeps right now," Aileyan said. Queens wing rarely did sweeps like this.

"That'd be much worse," Genna agreed. "How is Ravyan doing?"

"He's doing good. He does have a bit of a head cold, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed he doesn't pass it on me," Aileyan smiled when she talked about her son.

"Isn't there some unwritten law that mothers don't get sick?" she joked. "Or is it just them hiding it so well when they have sick children to care for?"

"It's the latter," Aileyan replied with a smile. She found Genna easy to talk to. She didn't feel need to stay back from her.

"Thank you for killing the magic in that," Genna said with a wink. "How old is he now? Has he started Harper classes yet?" She found with most parents conversation came easy when talking about their offspring.

"He's five now, so yes, he has classes," Aileyan replied. It still amazed her how fast the time had gone. It felt like she had Impressed only yesterday, yet it was six Turns ago.

"Does he want to be a dragonrider, like his mother?" Genna asked curiously. She wasn't too great with the younger kids, but she loved their naive enthusiasm when it came to talking about their desired future professions. It was absolutely endearing.

"Sometimes, sometimes he wants to be harper, or cook and one day he wanted to be canine. He went all fours and barked whole day," Aileyan replied.

"I would have liked to see that!" Genna laughed, imaging the scene. "I'm sure he'd make a great canine." She winked at the greenrider, so she wouldn't think Genna was mocking her or her son.

"It suddenly ended when I served him food from the floor," Aileyan giggled.

"Was it raw meat, by chance?" Genna asked with a giggle. "Ah, I'm not that great with kids, but they can be very amusing."

"No, just regular stew. But eating it without utensils? He feels he's too big for that," Aileyan replied. "And yes, they are so amusing."

Genna chuckled some more as she could certainly imagine the boy's indignation and being 'forced' to eat with his hands. "Do you get to spend a lot of time with him?" Thinking about how she spent her time off, she figured Aileyan probably didn't get much time for herself if she was also partly raising her child.

"As much as I can, being a dragonrider is full time occupation," Aileyan replied and peered at the direction of Kjarliheth. The green was just a dark shape seen thru the snow.

"Exactly," Genna agreed yet again. "I wouldn't know where to find time to be with my child, should I ever have any. I admire you for managing that! It must require more than a little sacrifice."

"It's choise you must do, I don't feel it's a sacrifice," Aileyan said seriously. True, she didn't have much free time...or social life.

"Well, if I ever can help with something, let me know," Genna said. "I'm not that great with children, I admit, but I'm sure there are ways in which I can help out."

"He has a fostermother, you know, and very good one too. But thank you for your offer, you're very kind and generous," Aileyan said, gently declining her offer.

Genna nodded, accepting the decline gracefully before being distracted by a couple of kitchen workers coming in with huge pitchers with steaming hot klah. "At last," she cried out, having the decency to look ashamed when she saw the exasperated expression on one of the kitchen worker's faces. They'd probably been working hard to get it fixed up on top of their other duties.

"Thank you," Aileyan said to the kitchen worker who gave her a steaming mug. "I so needed this," she remarked.

Genna took her own mug and made an extra show of her gratitude, to make up for her impatient outcry from earlier. "Me too. This cold has almost got me hoping the weather turns so we can fight to warm up!"

"Well, I don't mind waiting, but it could be little warmer," Aileyan said.

"But then if it was warmer, we'd be up in the air in the middle of Threadfall," Genna laughed at the paradox of the situation. "Ah well, it's in people's nature to complain a little, isn't it? We do have a clutching to look forward to, however! Have you joined any bets on how big it'll be?"

"I don't bet," Aileyan replied with faint smile of amusement.

"I especially don't when it comes to clutches," Genna laughed. "People expect me to know about those things, but I'm always wrong!"

"Me too," Aileyan said. "I rather just watch and enjoy."

"We are a lot alike, you know," Genna laughed, agreeing with the greenrider yet again. "I can't help but agree with you on everything. It's funny how circumstances like these have you getting to know people better than you would normally."

Aileyan just nodded in agreement.

Genna looked at Aileyan in silence for a moment, deciding then that she really should spend more time getting to know her wingmate. Aileyan may not be a person to draw attention to herself, but it was clear they had more in common than she had thought at first.
