Genna

Genna

It took a few more seconds, but then Lissath and Genna blinked out of /between/ to his right. Genna smiled as she felt the wind in her face again, away from the cold of between. So this was Lemos?

"So, do you want to go in the woods or to the Hold proper? If we go to the Hold proper, I imagine there might be some greetings and such. If we go to the woods first without anyone seeing the dragons....we could leave 'em and then go towards the outer bits of the Hold to look around without being crowded." He had heard about what had happened to Genna at Emerald Falls. He didn't understand it really but hadn't got the nerve up to ask G'nir. Maybe that would be better for her. Also, it meant more freedom to do what they wanted instead of having to meet people they didn't know. **I could protect her if something happened, after all.** He might be on the small side, but the farmboy-turned-rider was solid and with all the lugging around of Iroth's stuff, he'd developed muscle already.

"I would like to be anonymous for a day," Genna called back with a smile. "Let's head to the woods first!" She'd have to remember to hide her knots in the fold of her tunic, should they get closer to the hold. She couldn't exactly take them off, but it wouldn't hurt to cover them up a little, so no one would notice.

Taking the cue from her, he gave Iroth the signal and the bronze used the meadow to make an easy landing, ending up near where the trees began. R'gelen didn't dismount, though, watching for anyone or anything approaching as they waited for Lissath to land, keeping safety in mind.

Lissath landed smoothly, eyeing R'gelen curiously at the way he kept mounted. Genna vaguely understood what he was doing, though, and was touched. She gave the terrain a quick surveying glance herself before dismounting.

Seeing Genna get down, he finally did himself when he was satisfied the coast was clear. Taking off some of his heavy flying gear, he stuffed it into the carisaks attached to Iroth's harness. Standing there in his trousers and a light tunic, he ran a hand through his curls and then walked towards Genna, turning into the boy he was. "So what do you want to do first? Can we go hike? It's great weather!"

"A hike sounds great," Genna agreed at once, "let's go explore these woods for a while, eh?"

As they set off on a path into the woods, Genna remembered to keep track of their path. They could always call their dragons to pick them up, of course, but she felt safer roughly knowing where she was. Lissath settled into a comfortable spot just beyond the start of the treeline. There was enough shade, so that the sun didn't reflect on her golden hide or that of her bronze companion. That way they could both enjoy an afternoon of quiet relaxation.

}: It's nice sometimes, to have an afternoon away from everything, isn't it? :{ she asked Iroth conversationally. }: Not too often though, or it gets boring. And it's nice to have one companion at least. :{

}:We go away alot. Mine likes to see all the things he never saw when he was smaller. I have strong wings to take him wherever he should want to go.:{ Iroth thought about and how Lissath had formed her question. }:When we are older we will have more things to do so it is better to do it now. Did you explore before you were in a wing?:{ Despite himself, Iroth had come up to curl next to the queen, enjoying the warmth and comfort. He was watching, though, and ready to move if needed. His had warned him and he had the inherent instinct to protect his queen as all dragons did.

Genna, meanwhile greatly enjoyed the hike. The weather was just fine, the woods diverse and R'gelen's boyish enthusiasm infectious. It was as often her own initiative as R'gelen's when they went off in a certain direction because it looked interesting in some way. When, after quite a long hike, they came across a clearing in the woods where the sun warmed a nice small field, she gestured at the bag swung over her back. "Shall we stop here for a bite to eat?"

"Oh? Well okay sure." Now that he was paying attention, he heard his stomach rumbling. Coming closer, he helped her get the pack off and began to make the things ready. Wondering if it was the right time, based on the candlemarks they had just walked companionably together, chatting, he decided he should ask. "So, what's it like to be a wingriding goldrider? I mean...I know I'll have more responsibilities someday. Does it get to be too much?"

"It does, at times," Genna nodded. "Especially at first. I had some difficulties reading and writing at a greater pace, so that took me some time to settle in to. A lot of my duties involve records." She let out a little sigh at that last word. "But you get used to things and you learn to balance it all a little better. It does get easier the more experience you have. And I'm sure you have plenty of responsibilities already, don't you?"

He looked down and then back up at the trees as he started to peel a redfruit. "I help with the weyrlings, ride sweeps, have watch duty, transports sometimes, and I get to help G'nir. I run personal errands for him and get to walk around with him sometimes." His voice held a tone of awe that anyone could have heard and it was clear that the young rider looked up to the former Weyrleader very much. "Trying to learn as much as I can so when I do become a wingrider I'll be ahead."

"Oh, wow, working with G'nir," Genna said, sincerely impressed. "You know, he always kind of intimidates me. He's got such a presence, I can't help but respect him, you know. I'm sure he's a valuable source of information! You'll be more than ready when your time comes."

"I have a healthy respect and I know what it feels like to get a bad look." Shrugging, R'gelen smiled then. "Honestly, though, once you get to know him he's really not scary. He makes a lot of sense." He didn't have illusions, though. If he screwed up, he was sure the Weyrlingmaster would be on his butt quicker than a trundlebug on a tuber plant. "Course my mother is probably tons more scarier than him so that's just me." That brought up another curious question. "So umm we learn about them in weyrling class and stuff but you probably get to meet them and know them better. Someday, if I end up...well I'll have to meet them then too. What are the other Weyrleaders like?" He really wanted to know what she thought about his Aunt, but he didn't come out and say it.

"Well, not as scary as I always think before meeting them. It really is a matter of getting to know the person behind the knots. They are all just people, like us, only more experienced." Genna seemed thoughtful for a moment. "I guess if you assume the right attitude, there is a lot to learn from every one of them."

"Probably is. Every place is different too, needing different people." He turned back to what he'd been messing with. His mind went to Iroth, checking to see if his bronze was up to no good. When there was nothing out of place in the emotions he felt, he brought his attention back to Genna. Not a bad birthingday trip, at all.

"Very true," Genna agreed as she pried in the pack she'd brought along. "I brought you a small birthingday gift. It's not much, but I hope you'll like it." She had gone to the Tanners and found a very nice, dark belt with bronze-coloured detailing. It was wrapped in a colourful cloth and tied with string.

A small look of disbelief covered his features. R'gelen hadn't been expecting any presents. Of course not many had come his way besides a small package from his parents and he'd planned to meet Corofel in a few days' time when he could. "Oh thanks! I mean...you didn't have to." Opening it up, he saw the belt and immediately turned it over and over in his hands. "That's....better than anything else I have."

"Good, then you'll wear it," Genna laughed. "And it's okay, I was very pleased to be invited to your day out and I wanted to do something in return. I hope you'll have good use of it."

"Hopefully I'll start growing more soon. I'll definitely need a good belt then." At least that was his hope. He didn't want to be this small forever. Everyone had assured him, though, he would hit his growth spurt within the next few turns. He hadn't expected he was going to enjoy spending time with Genna so much but turned out she was an allright person after all. Inviting her had been a good choice. "I figure we'll need to head back in a candlemark or so. Better eat as much as you want now." The less they had left, the less they had to carry. The young bronzerider reached to grab a redfruit slice.

"Good idea," Genna agreed, picking up a meatroll and biting into it with fervor. "This was a really good trip, R'gelen, thanks again for inviting me."
