Kapera

Kapera

Kapera had been feeling a little restless the last few days, as she'd
found her time being consumed by the puzzle of the bad oil. So she'd
decided to take a break from her worries for the night by reaching out
to J'nus and seeing if he was free.

}:Kopth, my rider wishes to know if yours is available,:{ Riyanth told
the bronze, peering outward from her ledge to scan for him.

**I wasn't ready yet,** she thought at her dragon. She'd still been
looking through her wardrobe for something nicer than the flying
leathers, and determining if she would suggest going out or a dinner in.

The gold snorted mentally. }:You would dither until it got late and
then be annoyed. Just being around his makes you happy.:{

The gold dragon had a point. So Kapera backed away from the wardrobe
and settled for letting her hair down and settling in to wait to hear
back.

}:My rider is free, and says that he will visits yours,:{ Kopth sent
back. On his
ledge, the bronze dragon stretched like a feline and sharpened his
talons against
the cliff face. }:I wish to sit with you.:{

}:I would like that,:{ the gold said, shifting on the ledge so that she
could make room for him. She remembered that she liked his attention and
that she wanted it to stay on her.

}:Oh, his is coming,:{ she added at her rider.

Kapera poured juice to have something to do with her hands. Her stomach
felt fluttery with nerves for some reason.

There was a knock at the door. "Can I come in?" J'nus asked when the
door swung open on its hinges.

"No, I invited you over to turn you away," she joked.

"Too late. I'm here." The bronzerider let himself in and crossed the
room to kiss Kapera hello. "How're you?"

"I've been up too late," she admitted. "Tracking down a puzzle to hand
to Cyradis."

"Yeah?" J'nus settled onto a seat beside her. "What sort of puzzle?"

"D'shiel and I found bad strap oil. I did some digging into it. Maybe
it was contaminated during travel. But turns out it came from Emerald
Falls, and you know how they feel about the Cove right now. So now I'm
wondering if it was deblierate."

Did that sound paranoid? As she said it, that's what the goldrider thought.

"Hmm. Maybe." The bronzerider turned the problem over in his mind.
"There was a lot of sour feelings over that Holdless boy, and I
seriously don't think that a song commissioned by the Weyrleaders has
fixed that. But I doubt it was deliberate... at least not a deliberate
move by the Hold itself. Individual holders, maybe..." He shrugged.
"What are you going to tell Cyradis?"

"I'll show her the bad oil and the records tying it back to Emerald
Falls, and ask what she wants to do. I'm not the one who gets to make
the approach call anymore." Her tone was a mixture of wistfulness and
relief. "I just know I missed dinner poring over the records for this.
Two days in a row."

"That's dedication right there. And maybe I can make it up to you?"

"And just how were you thinking?" she asked with a playful tone.

"Well... I could take you out somewhere. A tavern near Emerald Falls,
maybe?" He arched his eyebrows at her-- a Weyr presence in light of
spoiled oil might be a good reminder. "Or I could bring you something
from the kitchens, hand-delivered and undoubtedly delicious. They
Weyrwoman's Second should never be forced to skip a meal... or anything
else."

"The tavern sounds like it's appealing," she said. "They'd have
something that isn't fish."

"Or maybe a Gather... there's got to be one happening somewhere on Pern."

"It always seems that way, doesnt it?" she asked. "Whatever you desire.
I'm happy to follow your lead."

The bronzerider felt himself puff up a little. The way she looked at
him, her eyes bright and trusting... Kapera was a beautiful woman and
half his age. J'nus would happily take what she allowed him to, until
she grew tired and was done. Tonight suddenly felt fragile. He held
out his hand. "Then follow me."

She slipped her fingers into his and beamed. "We'll have a good night."

On the ledge, Riyanth crooned at Kopth, appreciating the surge of
warmth from her rider's feelings. Kopth gently rubbed his head against
the golden queen's in acknowledgement.
