R'enh

R'enh

Zaeryn was focused on her work. When other people focused, they might
be aware of things around them and might even be able to listen to
conversations. However, when Zaeryn was concentrating, the world could
fall down around her ears and she'd still be working.

The bracelet was almost done, but it was intricate work, placing gems
and setting them into place.

A finger reached out to push one of the pins back into the steady
board or the bracelet would have slipped out of place. "That was
almost bad," he said softly.

Zaeryn startled. A set of tweezers and a semi-precious stone clattered
on the worktop as she dropped them. "Shells!" she exclaimed.

"oops," he said and his hand darted to catch the stone before it could
fall and run under some furniture where they couldn't find it. "Didn't
mean to startle you." Sincere blue eyes looked in to hers.

"Of course, why would anyone startle someone on purpose?" From anyone
else it'd be a rhetorical question. From Zaeryn, however, it was
sincere.

"Oh I have on occasion," he chuckled. He looked at the stone in his
hand. "This is a beautiful stone," he said.

"It is," she agreed. "I like the way the white vein contrasts against
the blue of the rest of the stone."

He nodded and put out his hand for her to pluck it from his palm.
"Yes, it is unique. Do you have any more?"

"Only the ones already set." She pointed before taking the stone back.
"Shame. I'd have liked something with one." Not that she could afford
it right now.

He leaned closer to look. "That would be beautiful in a wrought worked
pendant. Do you know where the stone came from?"

"The ground," she replied. Remembering that people didn't like when
she said that, she added, "From a mine in the North. They turn these
up occasionally. Sometimes I get a few from a friend up there."

He almost snorted at her first comment but settled for a grin. "We
could go get some if you'd like," he added and shifted his weight to
bring his knots into the light which was mostly focused down onto the
work she was doing.

"We?" She noted that he was a dragonrider, but never had grasped the
preoccupation with rank. Obviously she understood the relationship
between rank and skill level in an occupation, but why people found it
intimidating was beyond her.

She also knew that 'we' could mean anything from 'you and I' to 'me
and someone else', or 'you, me and someone else'. It was never goof to
assume.

"Yeah, we." His brows twitched together. "As in you and me get on a
big bronze dragon and go there to get some stones." Alright maybe he
was going about this wrong and the woman was simply obtuse.

If there was any negative nuance or condescension, it was lost on
Zaeryn. "That would be nice," she said. "I just need to put these
things away or they might not be here when I get back."

"I can help if you'd like," he smiled. "Do you have something warm to
wear for the trip?"

"It's all right, I like everything packed up a certain way, to make it
easier to find and use again." She didn't like things to be out of
place, it stressed her. "And I have a flight jacket, it hangs up
inside the cupboard." She gestured toward the side of the room.

He stepped over to the cupboard she indicated and pulled out the
jacket he found there on a peg. Then he held it out open for her to
slide into when she was ready. "Here you go," he said in an amused
tone.

Rather that slide into it, as most people would have, Zaeryn smiled
her thanks, took the jacket from him and shrugged it on. "All right, I
guess I'm ready."

R'enh was rather more amused than irritated by the woman's behavior so
he just shrugged and led the way to where Mnoranth awaited in the
Weyrbowl.
