Description: The girls meet the Weyrleader and his mate while walking on the beach.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 10 of Turn 8
Walking slightly ahead of Milga, Veerona carried her pail where she
kept interesting things.
Sometimes that meant a neat shell or a small sea creature she liked.
Other times that meant a rock or other thing she just picked up. Driftwood
was popular too.
Bending down to pick up a shell, she didn't see the people coming down the
beach towards them.
N'vanik walked hand-in-hand with Tal, enjoying a brief escape from
hidework and other responsibilities. Spotting the pair of girls, he
gave them a polite hello.
Milga responded to the gesture but she was wary. After her nightly
incident, she was cautious around strange people. Or just people in
general.
"Vee, don't wander off too far from me," the dolphineer apprentice
cautioned. She was the one responsible for their safety.
"Are you from the Hall?" N'vanik asked. They had been coming from that
direction.
"Yes, we are, sir," Milga replied. She did recognize him now that he
was closer. She had been around the Weyr long enough to know the
Weyrleader by sight. They never talked before though and it made her
nervous.
Veerona stopped walking when the man had said hello. She listened to the
exchange between him and Milga. Young as she was, she didn't know many
shoulder knots yet, especially outside of the Hall, so she didn't know who
he
was. Swinging her pail once, she gave a small noise, then looked up because
he was very tall. "I am. My name is Veerona. My fostermother is the
Headwoman."
It sounded like something she had been taught to say.
Milga smiled fondly at her.
Talryne had never been good with children, but Veerona wasn't _that_
young. "Nice to meet you, Veerona. I'm Talryne."
"And I'm N'vanik. I've heard good things about your fostermother.
You're a lucky girl." Would Nisha be like this when she was older?
"N'vanik....oh then you're a dragonrider! My daddy is...or was...or
something. Never met him though. What is your dragon like?"
Something in the back of her mind made her remember when those dragons
had gotten her out of the cave. That had been a very
scary, unhappy time. She moved back toward Milga after nodding to
Talryne. She did have manners after all.
"Very bronze and very big," N'vanik said with a smile.
Was he going to keep talking to these girls? Well, it wasn't so bad,
right? Talryne turned to the older girl, studying her knots. "So
you're a... dolphineer?"
"Yes, ma'am, junior apprentice. My name is Milga," Milga replied with
a brisk, respectful tone. Nobody could ever blame her for lack of
manners. She was quiet and hated being centre of attention but when
she was forced to spotlight, she was polite and behaved properly.
"Nice to meet you." Talryne was fine talking to people if there was a
_reason_ but just the idea of making small talk brought on her social
anxiety.
N'vanik sensed it and squeezed her hand. "Well, you girls have fun."
After all, they'd intended a quiet walk and he didn't want to ruin
that.
Milga gave a polite nod as reply. She wasn't one for a small talk either.
She was keeping her other eye on Veerona whole the time.
"Bye, bronzerider man and lady!" Veerona said a little quickly before
leading
Milga in the opposite direction. When they were down the beach a-ways, she
stopped walking. "It was a dragon like that who stole me from the cave
and took me to the Weyr when I was scared. Wasn't him...do you think he
steals girls
a lot and maybe that's how come that other lady was scared?"
"Dragonriders don't steal children, they rescued you from the storm," Milga
said
with a patient tone. "And his lady wasn't scared, she was just shy. Some
people
just don't like talking to unfamiliar people," she explained to Vee. Like
her.
"Oh...but we're just...girls." That caused a confused look to cross
her face. Then she shrugged and continued walking with Milga, eager to find
more things for her pail.
