One Big Jump

Writers: Avery, Paula
Date Posted: 24th July 2015

Characters: Ciendra, L'pin, E'lyn, T'dain
Description: Riyanth's class goes /between/ for the first time.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 22 of Turn 8

At least the weather was nice, L'pin thought as they got to the Hall and
began to tread the air. It was bright and sunny, with a breeze to keep it
from being too hot. Rain would have been more trouble to fly in.

"Okay, E'lyn, you're first. Do you have the visual?" he yelled over.

The brownrider's dragon passed it over. He and Chaneth examined it.
"It's good." He raised his arm in the traditional signal to go.

Aralth blinked /between/. It seemed like everyone was holding their
breath - L'pin, the other weyrlings - and counting the heartbeats.
One, two, three, four, fi -

Chaneth made a bugle, having received contact from the watchdragon on
the other side. }:Aralth's has arrived!:{

One whirling down. Eight more to go. L'pin waved at Ciendra next.

"Huh? Me?" Ciendra had hoped she had more time, although she was sure
the extra time wouldn't help her.

** The visuals, please, ** Lialeth reminded her.

Ciendra gather her wits and created the visualization. She made sure
she had no extra, no embellishments nor any clues about time when she
sent it to Lialeth.

Lialeth contacted Chaneth. }: Here, :{ she sent her rider's image to
Chaneth to be approved. The green felt it was very good image.

It was a clear visual, the blue thought with approval. He passed it to
his rider. }:It is solid.:{

"Go ahead," he called over, raising his arm again. Then he held his
breath, waiting.

}: We're good to go, :{ Lialeth reported, pick up speed.

Ciendra took a deep breath and held it. **Then go!** She hold on to
that image like her life depended on it (and in a way, it did).
Lialeth dove into to /between/ and Ciendra found herself enfolded by
terrible nothingness.

}: I'm still here,:{ Lialeth's mind was connected to hers. And then
the three heartbeats were passed and they were out. Sun shone on Star
Stones. Ciendra saw E'lyn and Aralth gliding over them. She let out a
little whoop of victory. They had made it!

}:They are back,:{ Chaneth reported with another happy call.

L'pin sighed in relief. **Tell them they did a very good job!**

}:You and your rider did well,:{ the blue told Lialeth.

The next pair went. Again L'pin waited for the confirmation they came back.

}: Thank you, :{ Lialeth warbled happily and told her rider they were
being complimented. Ciendra was wearing a huge grin on her face.

T'dain popped out of /between/ very close to Lialeth. The bluerider
grinned at Ciendra. "We lived!"

Once the whole class had gone, L'pin brought himself and Chaneth back
to the Star Stones. "How's everyone feeling?"

"Just fine!" Ciendra replied. Now that she had done it, she felt more
confident. She could do it again.

The group was confident, and he smiled. "Alright. We're going to practice
some more local jumps, together as a class this time. Now that you've been
through, it shouldn't be too scary."

E'lyn spoke up. "When do we get to go elsewhere? Like, not the Weyr?"

"First we practice local points, then territory points, then around the
continent," L'pin told the brownrider. "If you're interested in going home,
talk to the weyrlingstaff later and we'll let you know when it's possible."

E'lyn didn't say anything after that but he hung his head.

"Now then, let's picture the Dolphin Hall, since we were just there..."
