"May I?" Eirock asked once Bryvin seemed to have finished reading the
papers. Shocked by Taril's words he wanted to see the documents.
Would Yriadha really have been so brazen? Had the loss of her son
imbalanced her somehow?
It wasn't hard for Yriadha to find out from the drudge why she was
being summoned. The drudge didn't know the specifics, but she was able
to tell the Headwoman who was in Bryvin's office. The discovery that
Humari was again with Taril lit her with a fury that she had to
quickly tamp down. How had that crippled merchant managed to find her
daughter? The man was far slicker than she gave him credit for. She
had made the mistake of underestimating him and it would not be a
mistake she would make again. Her mind worked quickly and before the
drudge could scamper off, Yriadha sent her off to fetch someone. It
was her trump, she thought grimly as she made her way to the Lord
Holder's office.
As she arrived, she smoothed her skirts, took a deep breath and rapped
firmly at the door. She kept her face impassive as she was summoned
inside and stepped in, immediately giving Bryvin a formal curtsey. Her
eyes swept over the others in the room, lingering over Humari, who
shifted uncomfortably in her chair, and then back to the Lord Holder.
"You summoned me, Lord Bryvin?"
His eyes narrowed, "I did," he said evenly. Then he nodded to the
document in Eirock's hands. "Would you care to explain this document
and your actions with regards to Humari?" He purposely didn't name the
young woman as either Taril's wife or her daughter.
The narrowed gaze made her eye twitch, just barely and for an instant,
she was worried. But her smooth expression never wavered. "The
marriage is invalid. Humari was unable to consent to her vows due to a
mistake by her sister with fellis. It is unfortunate considering her
condition, but perhaps fortunate because of the evidence that I have
gathered against him." Her chin lifted. "I would not have my daughter
wed to a criminal, my Lord. Had a known what he is capable of, I would
have never allowed her to marry him and would have waited for someone
more...suitable."
Taril snorted. Suitable? What she meant was 'had less of a backbone'.
Still, he bit his tongue and kept his expression bland, although a
whisper of unease ran down his spine. He _was_ a criminal, but he was
careful-- what sort of evidence could Yriadha possibly have?
Bryvin looked briefly at each of the others in the room to gauge their
moods then he turned his back on them and walked to the window. His
hands clasped behind him. Everyone was tense and he was not in a mood
to be kind to any of them. This dispute should not have risen to his
attention. He was certain Eirock would haven handled everything
correctly if he'd been informed of Yriadha's intentions prior to her
actions. Her barb aimed at Taril meant less than nothing. The merchant
was smart and well connected and Bryvin doubted Yriadha could have
done any better for her daughter, but that was neither here nor there.
"Very well," he said and turned back to face them. "Here is what is
going to happen. Humari is going to go home with her husband. While
her declarations on the official day of their wedding are suspect. Her
declaration before me today is not. She has said she wishes to return
to Taril and I will grant her that wish."
He didn't even glance in the Headwoman's direction. "I am sorry my
friend," he extended his hand to Taril. "We all know women need men to
help them take care of their business properly. They go about it all
wrong." His mouth twisted up into a cruel smile. "If she had filed the
documents according to custom this matter might have gone
differently," not that he believed it would. But he wanted all of them
to know he was _not_ condoning the way Humari's mother had behaved.
"I declare your marriage valid." He nodded to both Eirock and Jakin to
handle the formalities and get him the documentation to sign.
Humari heaved a sigh of relief even as she looked at both her mother
and Taril in askance about the claims of him being some sort of
criminal. The statement made her mind latch on to the statement made
by her brother, that Taril was not a man to trifle with. Her brows
furrowed as she began to thank Bryvin, rubbing her belly with
discomfort.
