Description: Bryvin finds out what has happened to Humari
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 7
Notes: Part 1 of 3; Mentioned: Bortem, Xeladrie
After the evening with Xeladrie, Bryvin had some business to handle.
He'd promised her he'd look into the reason Humari hadn't been
attending her and the first place he decided to start was with her
husband. So, he sent a note around to the docs to see if the merchant
could come up to the hold.
The message didn't get a reply until much later, when Taril turned up
at Bryvin's door trailing his wife and the Harper Jakin. "Oh good,
you're still here," he said as he entered. "I was hoping you'd be
working late. I have Hold business for you."
Humari dipped an immediate, but awkward curtsey, her advanced
pregnancy making her ungainly. "My Lord, " she murmured politely,
glancing at Taril with surprise at his familiar way of speaking to
Lord Bryvin. "Forgive our intrusion."
Bryvin rose from his seat and immediately went to Humari. "Are you
alright," he asked with concern. "Xeladrie was quite worried about
you." He led her to a chair. "Please," he said and turned to Taril.
"What kind of business?" He looked curiously at the Harper.
"I wish to bring a formal complaint against Headwoman Yriadha. She
has--" Taril wasn't quite able to keep the anger from his voice, but
was able to stop himself before explaining to Bryvin just what she'd
done. That was Jakin's job. He nodded at Jakin to continue.
The harper took the cue and stepped forward. "By your leave, my Lord.
Today, Headwoman Yriadha held Humari against her will as she had
hidework signed that nullified the legal marriage between Taril and
Humari. There are three main issues with this: one, that she did so
without informing Taril of her intent or giving him time to respond,
never mind the fact that Humari is pregnant with Taril's child. Two,
that Yriadha is basing this annulment on something her other daughter,
Torinya, has claimed and cannot be verified. Three, that she, in
essence, kidnapped Humari and held her captive against her will-- her
own daughter, and a holder under your protection." He held the
hidework he'd been carrying out to Bryvin. "I can personally attest to
the veracity of Taril's complaint on my honour as a harper. If you
will hear the complaint that Taril brings against Humari, I will
happily go over each point in more detail, as well as the contents of
the pre-nuptial contract that Taril and Yriadha signed."
"Thank you, Lord Bryvin." Humari sat in the proffered chair with a
thankful smile."Your wife is very kind. I am fine, just tired." She
rubbed her back, the long walk and the stress from the past few days
had made the muscles sore and they throbbed periodically.
Humari listened and softly interjected, her voice pained but honest.
"The problem is, I was given fellis on my wedding day." She glanced at
Taril. "I don't think I could have worn that dress without it." It had
been extremely tight and painful on her back the entire day. Without
the fellis, she didn't think she could have stood the pain and the
memory of her vows was hazy from the dosage. She didn't think her
admission would help their case, but it was ingrained in her to be
honest.
"Thank you Jakin," he nodded. Bryvin remembered something about her
stiffness when he'd danced with the bride at their wedding. That might
have been part of it what she'd explained but he still needed some
further clarification. "So do you confirm that you were withheld from
Taril against your will Humari? Did you wish to return to him?" There
was a great deal wrong with this situation but he wanted to make
certain he'd heard from each of the party's in their own words. Much
hung on her next words.
Humari glanced at Taril and then looked at the Lord Holder with
serious brown eyes. "I did want to go home to him, Lord Bryvin. I
didn't want to stay with my mother." Her voice was soft, but firm. "My
place is with him."
Just then there was a knock on the partially opened door. "I have
those - oh, my apologies for the interruption," Eirock said, noting
the serious mien of those in the room.
"Come in Eirock," Bryvin motioned. "Have you had a petition filed by
the headwoman annulling the marriage of her daughter to this man?"
Then he looked at the Harper. "Whose signature was on Yriadha's
documentation?"
Stepping inside and closing the door behind him, Eirock was able to
hide his shock as he turned his attention to those gathered in
Bryvin's office. His eyes flicked to Taril, though carefully
composed, he was radiating controlled anger, and then to Humari who
looked unwell. Finally, he turned an inquiring gaze to Bryvin,
watching carefully for any non-verbal communication as he shook his
head. "I have not," he replied evenly before turning to Jakin to hear
the harper's response to the question.
Bryvin's eyes tightened though he kept control of his temper for the
moment. Yriadha's hubris was getting out of hand and he would have to
take her down a few pegs if she'd done what he suspected. But he
would have the name of whatever unfortunate had signed her document.
He held out his hand wordlessly to the Harper.
As the men talked, Humari shifted uncomfortably in her seat, glancing at
Taril. What would all of this mean? She didn't want to cause too much
trouble for anyone. She just wanted her mother to leave her and Taril alone.
She didn't want to have to fear her own family any more.
Taril spared her an encouraging look before turning back to the Lord
Holder and Steward. "She's gone ahead and tried to legally dissolve my
marriage as-- as a _surprise_." He spat the last word. "Tried to steal
my pregnant wife and turn my child into a bastard, just because she
thinks she can wed Humari off to someone more profitable. If it
weren't for Bortem's quick thinking, who knows where she'd have been
whisked off to. This is a Sea Hold."
The document was placed into his hand and he lifted the page to look
at an unfamiliar signature. His attention went back to Taril when
Bortem's name was dropped. So comment led him to the conclusion that
Taril had some kind of hold on the man. "Good for him," he said mildly
to preserve the illusion.
Bryvin looked directly at Taril for a moment longer before taking a
step to the wall and pulling on the bell-pull to summon a drudge. When
he heard the scratch at the door he called for it to be opened. "Get
the Headwoman," was all he said. Taking a seat at his desk he looked
over the document. It didn't have any stewards marks to say it had
been properly noted and filed.
