After his third time reading the same sentence, R'taran set aside the
hide and picked up his glass of wine. His mind just wasn't on the
historical account on which he'd been attempting to focus. Instead a
pair of hazel eyes framed by long brown hair and the memory of leading
a certain greenrider to the dance floor drifted into his thoughts.
-FLASHBACK-
Relaxed after having a couple glasses of wine and in good spirits
after seeing his younger brother Impress, R'taran was more than ready
to dance when the harpers started playing. After partnering with a
couple of lower cavern workers, his eyes fell on Aishara's warm smile.
Unerringly he made his way to the striking greenrider, a smile on his
face. "Care for a turn on the dance floor?"
"R'taran, of course I do," Aishara held her hand for him.
"Congratulations, I heard it was your brother who got the bronze."
Taking her hand and relishing he contact, R'taran grinned. "Thanks,
I'll pass that on to him. He's walking on air, but then I remember
that feeling. There's nothing quite like the day you first look into
your dragon's eyes and know you're meant or each other. First flight
might have been a close second, though."
"Yes," Aishara agreed, "I don't know about the first flights though, I
was pretty nervous during it," she continued.
"Really?" He spun his lovely partner to the music and then brought her
back in close. "With your love of riding runners, I would have
thought you would have relished the new adventure."
Aishara realized that they had been thinking quite a different First
Flights. "Well, yes, that was not the first flight I was refering to,"
she said.
R'taran chuckled, "Oh, ho, look where your mind is this evening," he
teased. "That was indeed another monumental first, but I can see where
you might have had some trepidation." First flights could be hard on
greenriders and he found himself wondering how Ayumith's first flight
had gone and who had won.
"Watch where your own mind is going," Aishara slapped him playfully on
the chest.
"Hey! I'm a healthy man in his prime, dancing with the most lovely
lady in the room. Where do you expect my mind to go?" He grinned down
at her enjoying the interplay.
Aishara just laughed and twirled with the music.
The sound of her laughter was better than the harpers' tunes and
R'taran just focused on enjoying the rest of the dance and the time
with Aishara. As the song came to a close he asked, "So did your
father come for the Hatching?"
"Yes, he did. Want to meet him?" Aishara replied.
"I'd like to meet him again," he nodded. "I met him when I was a boy,
but I'm sure he won't remember."
"Probably not, he's met so many little hold boys," Aishara replied.
The dance ended and she pulled him to the side. A middle aged man was
talking with elderly woman, whose white hair was done to elegent,
braided spiral. She held her with grace and dignity, her fingers
gnarled, swollen and obviously painful.
"Granmother, dad. This is R'taran, he's from Emerald Falls too," she
greeted them.
"Sweetheart," the woman smiled at her while Aivorn just made non commital grunt.
"My grandmother Aiele, retired Weyr beasthealer and my father Aivorn,
the stablemaster of Emerald Falls hold."
"It's a pleasure, Ma'am," he nodded first to the stately woman and
then to Aivorn. "Sir, you've done business with my father, Rizpaulen.
He's been working on improving his herds with some quality breeding
stock."
"Ah, yes, Rizpaulen. I know him. So, you're his lot, huh?" Aivorn replied.
Aiele pulled her granddaugheter aside. "Did you lost your bronzerider?
What is he to you?" she nodded towards R'taran who was chatting with
Aivorn.
"He's around here somewhere, I'll catch up with him before the
evening's over. R'taran is just a friend," Aishara replied.
Aiele watched the way R'taran was looking at Aishara and sighed.
"You're so going to break this poor boy's heart," she predicted.
Oblivious to the two women's conversation, R'taran looked over at them
and smiled.
-END FLASHBACK-
The very same smile spread across R'taran's face as he sipped his
wine. Yes, that evening had been a step in the right direction. Now
he just needed to follow-up in some way. He puzzled over what he
might do to gain and hold the lovely greenrider's attention. Perhaps
he should have another talk with R'ehn as the bronzerider seemed to be
a wealth of information when it came to women. One way or the other
he planned on seeing far more of Aishara in the days to come.
