A Fine Clutch

Description: J'nus and R'taran exchange congratulations at the Hatching feast.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 11, day 18 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: P'ton, Kapera

After congratulating his little brother and seeing that his parents
were well settled with a group of Holders all come from Emerald Falls,
R'taran went to get himself a celebratory drink. As worried as he'd
been about bringing Paulton to the Weyr, he couldn't help but share in
his exultation now that the boy had Impressed. Today had also brought
back many fond memories of the day Qharterioth had chosen him on the
Sands. Once he'd procured a glass of wine he noticed J'nus nearby and
decided to congratulate the bronzerider.

"Kopth did well by Riyanth," he stated, lifting his glass in salute.
"'Twas a fine clutch."

"Thank you!" J'nus was beaming, still a little high on the pride
echoing down the bond he shared with Kopth. He lifted his own mostly
empty glass in a salute back. "But a fine clutch is nothing without a
fine set of candidates to Impress from. One is a relation of yours, I
gather?"

"My younger brother, Paulton, well, P'ton now," R'taran answered with
a nod before taking a sip of his wine. "I brought him to the Weyr
just a month ago. This was his first time to Stand." The brownrider's
voice also held a touch of pride.

"First time standing." J'nus shook his head in admiration. "The
dragonriding trait must run strong in your family. They must be
proud."

The bronzerider's words brought to mind his youngest sister, but so
far no one except R'haran and Meledei knew of Toni's Search. Masking
his thoughts R'taran grinned. "Both proud and relieved. My father
had begun to despair that Paulton was was an utter reprobate that
would never make good. Not to mention the herdsman's daughter has
turned up with child and my little brother was one of two prime
suspects."

The older dragonman snorted. A pregnant herdsman's daughter... it made
him think of his own misspent youth. "Lucky lad. Let's hope for
everyone's sake that P'ton learned something from the experience."

"I can only hope, but I've already given L'pin fair warning," R'taran
shook his head. "My brother has always been brash. I'm hoping his
dragon will level him out a little. Of course he's a boy of fifteen
turns, so perhaps he just needs to grow up a little," the brownrider
shrugged taking a larger drink of his wine.

J'nus smiled a bit. "Young enough to still be a lad, and old enough to
think he's a man. I'm sure that the Weyrlingmasters will sort him
out." He made a note to actually go meet the Weyrlingmasters. The
bronzerider hadn't cared much before, but now that this was Kopth's
clutching he found himself feeling invested.

"I have every confidence in them. From what I hear, the last weyrling
class had numerous challenges, but the weyrlingstaff has managed to
help them through. Not a responsibility I'd want for myself - I doubt
I'd have the patience - but I applaud their efforts."

"I don't have the patience either," J'nus admitted. "But I'm glad
someone does. This last class has been interesting already, and they
haven't even reached their Blooding. I'm sure your brother will have a
much easier time of it."

"He has his faults, but he tends to get along with most people, so I
suspect he will." R'taran didn't even like to think about blooding.
In truth he was more than a bit worried about his younger brother. He
reminded himself that tonight was about celebration not worry. "How
does Kapera feel about Riyanth's clutch?"

"Well!" J'nus grinned at that. "She spent so long with Riyanth
grounded, I think she's relieved to have had a successful clutching.
And it was a fair size, too."

"It was at that. Must have been some mating flight," R'taran said
giving J'nus a knowing grin before taking another sip of his wine.

A smile turned the edges of J'nus' lips, but he shook his head. "It
wouldn't be gentlemanly of me to boast." But it was something that he
wouldn't soon forget.

"Of course not," the brownrider replied with a smirk. "Hopefully,
I'll have the opportunity to congratulate Kapera tonight, perhaps even
beg a dance. I know my brother couldn't be more pleased with his
little bronze and though he might be small Cirynath seems to have a
rather strong will."

R'taran's smirk when he talked of Kapera irked him more than it should.
J'nus did his best to ignore it. "Most bronze dragons are guilty of that,"
he said instead, focusing on P'ton and Cirynath. "Which is perhaps a
good thing. If Cirynath is strong willed, then learning to control him will
teach P'ton some discipline."

"He needs it. Well, I should check on my parents. Enjoy the feast, J'nus."

"And to you." The bronzerider lifted his empty glass in farewell, then
turned to rejoin the feast.
