P'ton was pleased that the lecture had been limited today and they
were moving into the more practical aspects of first aid. They were
working in partners for the exercise and he grinned at Ciendra when
they paired up.
"So do you want to be injured or to play Healer?" he asked, teasingly
putting an emphasis on the final two words. Of course Ciendra seemed
rather shy so she might never had "played Healer," and might not pick
up on the innuendo.
"I've had first aid lessons during my candidate classes, so I can be
the patient," Ciendra replied with sober tone, totally missing all
hidden meanings. "You didn't have many candidate classes before
Impressing, did you?"
"Not many," he confirmed. "Okay, so I'm the Healer. They wanted us
to start with the arm injury, right? So tell me about your injury,
greenrider," he said in a mock serious tone," placing a gentle hand on
Ciendra's shoulder as if he were a concerned medic.
"I have a Thread Score, right here," Ciendra said and used the
charcoal they were given to smudge a spot in her arm, to indicate the
injury and how large it was.
"Okay, so first I examine the wound, douse it in cold water to cleanse
it and to be absolutely certain there is no active Thread. Then I
slather it in numbweed and um, let's see...bandage it up until a
Healer can have a look?" He reached for the bandages even as he asked
his question.
"You forgot a stage. Use redworth before numbweed. It prevents
infections and protects healthy skin from numbweed blisters," Ciendra
pointed out but with a kind tone.
P'ton smacked his forehead with his palm. "That's right! So redwort,
numbweed, and then bandage." He very gently reached for her arm,
outlining the suppose injury with a tender touch of his finger before
he starting to wrap the imagined wound. "So what do you think of
weyrlinghood so far?"
"I'm enjoying it. I mean, it's hard work and there are evenings when
I'm so tired I just drop to my bed, but I wouln't want any other
life," Ciendra replied. "Lialeth is everything I dreamed of and so
much more."
"I know exactly what you mean," he answered with feeling as his
thoughts went to his own lifemate. He finished the bandage and cocked
his head side-ways. "It's a little lumpy, but I suppose it would due
until a healer could see to you. So what's your favorite part so far,
outside of Lialeth of course?"
Ciendra looked over the bandage too. "It will prevent me bleeding out,
that's what counts. I don't know," she answered to his question.
"We've had a lot of theory in classes and then stuff like this, which
is important I know but I was glad to at least start with the
firestone sacks and drills. I'm anxious to move more into ground
drills and our flying preparations," he confided.
Ciendra nodded with undestanding. "The only things that make me
worried is the /betweening/ and Blooding. Thank Faranth they've still
months away."
"You'll be fine. We've got good instructors," P'ton stated
confidently. "And I'm sure we'll have drilled so much that when the
time comes it will be like second nature."
"Yes," Ciendra nodded. "And we should be concentrating on the today's
lesson," she reminded him gently and started to unwrap the bandage.
"My turn," she smiled.
"I'll let you take a hard one. How about the chest wound?" he
grinned, before grabbing his chest as if in terrible pain.
"Shall I cut off your shirt to get access to the wound?" Ciendra
asked. She could joke too, she was just most of the time too shy to do
it.
P'ton grinned, extremely pleased by the teasing from the sometimes
timid young woman. "Hmm, perhaps I'd best just remove it. If I go
begging Chaysea for more clothes so soon I might end up on the wrong
end of a wooden spoon. But we can pretend we're ripping it from my
writhing, pain wracked body if that makes you feel better," he said
with a wink.
Ciendra just sighed and shook her head: "You're impossible." As a
revenge, she wrapped the bandage around his chest too tightly. And
perhaps her fingers lingered on his back bit longer than was
nessessary.
Her revenge was bittersweet. The binding was uncomfortable, while her
tantalizing fingertips on his back were quite the opposite, reminding
him that she was a very pretty young woman. Quickly pushing that
thought aside to reconsider in another couple months , he managed a
wry grin. "Your patient won't have to worry about adequate pressure
on the wound, though breathing might be everso slightly challenging."
"Don't annoy your healer," Ciendra retorted and started to unwrap the bandage.
