Abrei

Syntara adjusted her fighting straps in the few moments before the leading edge of the threadfall reached the Torrent Wing; she was distracted enough today without having to toy with her straps mid-fall.
Faylith's flight a few days ago had made everything even more confusing, now not only was she involved with Ar'lis, but she had gotten R'yin into the mess as well.

}: Now is not the time to think over such things, Syntara :{ Faylith chided her. }: Threadfall requires your full attention. It's what's happening in the air that you should be thinking about, not what happened on the ground.:{ Syntara smiled to herself; Faylith was always right, always the voice of reason in her head. But somehow, she couldn't bring herself to block out everything that had happened on the ground.

** Once the fall starts, I'll be fine. ** Syntara always did well under pressure and she knew once she got into the rhythm of the fall, she'd be in her own world, in total control.

Before she had too much more time for reflection, the thin, silvery strands of thread reached her wing. And she was right, before she had time to think about forgetting everything, she already had.

Syntara's mind was completely focused on the task at hand: left, right, flame, more firestone, new formation. Everything was going according to plan when Ar'lis snuck back into her thoughts. She tried to get him out of her mind, but she couldn't until a more powerful force took control of it - pain.

The greenrider cried out in pain before she had a chance to truly register the sensation. She looked down at her throbbing hip and thigh and saw it: a single, pale bit of Thread, mercilessly gnawing at the skin and tissue it landed on.

Syntara gasped. ** Faylith, wait!** But it was too late. Once again, Syntara's mind was too slow. By the time she realized that Faylith would go /between/ to kill the thread, and what that would do to her body, the jump had already been completed.

She reappeared in the air over River Bluff Weyr barely conscious. She felt Faylith's worry for her and did her best to hold herself in place until they reached the ground. Just as the green landed with her injured rider, Syntara gave into the pain and slid into unconsciousness.

Abrei had an apprentice keeping an eye on Syntara, and when the greenrider finally woke up, the Weyrhealer arrived at her side only a few moments later. "How are you feeling, Syntara?"

Syntara was a little surprised at her surroundings and it took a few moments for her to remember what had happened. "Fine." She said quietly.
There were still too many pain numbing drugs in her body to tell for sure. "Am I _not_ fine?"

"You're fine now," Abrei replied calmly, laying a cool hand on Syntara's forehead briefly. "Do you remember what happened?"

"I missed a patch of Thread. It scored me. Then Faylith went between and I don't remember after that." She said it very calmly and detached, as though it had all happened to someone else instead of herself. "What are my injuries?"

"Your dragon went /between/ quickly enough that the damage to your hip is limited. We'll keep you on medication for the pain for a while and you'll need to be off your feet, but you should heal from the Threadscore without incident." Abrei hesitated for a moment, unsure how to break the next bit of news when Syntara hadn't mentioned it. Did she even know? It hadn't been on her chart, but that didn't mean much at this stage. "Do you remember anything else?"

"No." Syntara went quiet. There was something Abrei wasn't telling her.
She knew what it was the Weyrhealer was trying to avoid telling her. "So in a weeks my life can get back to the way it always has been?" She hoped the healer would understand what she was trying to ask.

"I'm sorry," Abrei said a little helplessly, laying her hand on Syntara's. "There was nothing we could do. Going /between/ at this stage is chancy enough, but when combined with your injuries..."

Syntara nodded and, to her surprise, blinked away tears. She didn't think hearing the words would hurt so much. "Thank you, Abrei." She took a deep, sharp breath. "What kind of a recovery am I facing? Will I be able to fly anytime soon?" She did her best to sound optimistic.

"It will be a few sevendays," Abrei replied, resting a hand on Syntara's shoulder. "Possibly sooner... it depends on how your injury heals and how long it takes to recover your strength. We'll only keep you in the infirmary for another day or two, just until we're sure there aren't going to be any complications."

"All right." The greenrider felt exhausted rather quickly, whether it was from her injuries or the fellis she wasn't sure. Her eyes grew heavy.

Abrei watched Syntara a moment before speaking in a quiet voice. "Is there anyone who needs to know? I can send an apprentice to fetch him if you want."

Syntara shook her head. "No. Nobody needs to know." And that was the truth.

"I'm sorry," Abrei said again, giving Syntara's shoulder a soft pat.
"I'll send an apprentice by to check on you a little later and see if you need anything else for the pain. If there are any other problems, just let someone know."

The greenrider nodded a second time and let the fellis in her system pull her into the darkness of sleep once more.
