Kapera

Kapera awoke reluctantly most mornings, having to be chased out of bed
with Riyanth nudging her to wakefulness. She found that she had to be
awake earlier at Dolphin Cove because so much was done in the early
mornings before it got too hot, and it was her least favorite change.
At least there was time in the afternoon for rest in a cooler, darker
location.

She always woke easier when with someone else, so she roused a little
easier and sent down a message for breakfast. It was delivered and she
brought it back in and set the table, hoping her company wouldn't mind
the presumption.

R'enh had slept well and enjoyed the company immensely. In fact, he
couldn't remember enjoying a woman's company more in the recent past.
"Good morning," he said as he came up behind her and peered over her
shoulder. "That looks wonderful," he added and wrapping his arms
around her waist, kissed her cheek.

"I figure we could use the breakfast." She leaned back into his touch with
a pleased soft noise. She could get used to this kind of attention - his
arms around her, his lips against her. He was a nice man, and she thought
she understood him.

He reached around her to pull out a chair for her and then slid into
the next one. Smiling he reached for the pot of klah and poured them
each a cup. "I want to thank you for last night Kapera," he said. "I
hope you know I didn't expect that when I came to meet you."

She was touched by his simple courtesies. "If you'd known me at
Dragonsfall you would have, and it would have been true."

He smiled sadly and nodded. "All of us have gone through those times.
Then, one day, we find a reason to be something else. I found out that
special relationships are just more fulfilling in the long run." He
reached for a piece of fruit and a small pastry.

"Do you have one now?" she asked after taking a drink from her own klah.
"Or several?" Because this was a weyr and she couldn't imagine total
exclusivity.

"I don't have a weyrmate," he said wondering if that was what she was
asking. "Though I have had in the past. But I do have several friends
I like to spend time with. Aishara, I'm sure you're familiar with, and
Cosani but neither of them want or need a great deal of my time.
They're both quite independent spirits," he smiled at her. That was
one of the things he liked best about them actually.

"Beauty of the Weyrs, isn't it? All these lovely people and the ability to
spend time with them all." Kapera might be trying to be more selective
about her partners, but she didn't want to be chaste forever.

"It is," he said. Kapera seemed to have her act together and that was
very attractive to him. Some of his own early history had been spent
with another gold rider with many more interpersonal challenges then
she seemed to have. Some people in his experience, were just
difficult. It didn't mean that he cared for her any less but it had
probably been part of the reason he'd come to Dolphin Cove instead of
River Bluff. Right at this moment in time he was very grateful for
that decision though perhaps he didn't run through all of that in his
inner voice. "But right here and now," he smiled. "I'd just like to
think about you."

Her eyes crinkled as she smiled. "You have a point. Why waste time talking
about others when I could find a little more out about you?"

She finished a pastry before speaking again. "You and Mnoranth are quite
the flyers. Are you proud to be wingsecond to the Weyrleader?"

"Thank you. We are quite proud," he smiled. "It's a big job," he
nodded. "of which I'm sure you're aware. You couldn't have come to
Dolphin Cove at a better time. And you've done a great job with the
wing while Cyradis has been laid up." He'd noticed, N'vanik had
noticed. Hopefully Cyradis had noticed.

"It's not so bad, to have responsibility again," she admitted. "She runs a
tight Weyr, and Meledei deserves credit too."

He smiled and picked up her hand. "I'm glad you say that about
Meledei. I think she has a lot of potential." He knew he was probably
telling her things she already knew but he had to say it. "She had a
bit of a rough patch there and I'm sure Saibra leaving has left its
mark. She's still got growing to do but she's very dedicated."

She curled her fingers around his. "Dedication is important for a
goldrider. For any ranker, really. But it's a hard lesson to learn. She
has a good start."

He squeezed her fingers. "Thanks," He had a special place in his heart
for the younger goldrider and was glad to see her benefit from such a
positive attitude.

R'enh leaned over and kissed Kapera's temple. "You're a special woman
Kapera," he said. It was obvious she was special in many ways or she
wouldn't be riding gold yet he'd met goldriders with far less empathy
for those around them.

"You're far too kind," she told him. "So tell me, anything interesting in
your story?"

"Oh I think everyone has an interesting story," he smiled. "I was
young and cocky and survived a threading that should have killed both
me and Mnoranth. I was very lucky and made a lifelong friend in the
days following."

As a goldrider, her wing flew low enough that she'd never had to worry
about Threadscoring as a real possibility, but she'd seen the scars on
other riders. And on him, lsat night.

"Friends help you get through a lot, don't they? Who's the nice
person?" she asked.

He didn't know if he'd really classify her as a 'nice' person but
they'd learned a lot from each other over the turns. "Rhosyn
actually."

"The River Bluff Weyrwoman?" she asked with a raised brow. "How long were
you out?"

"A couple of days, when it was safe to move me she had them bring me
to her weyr." He half smiled. "Nobody really tells her 'no.'" His
thoughts turned inward. "When I woke up she was right there taking
care of me."

"The extra attention must have helped you heal up well," she said. He
certainly seemed as though it hadn't destroyed his life. Not like with
some people she'd seen.

"We've been good friends ever since. I'm not certain how you can put a
label on that. But enough about me," he smiled. "Do you have any close
friends?'

She considered the question for a moment. "The closest person I know here
is J'nus. We were friends at Dragonsfall. Other then that, I'm close to
R'iss at Windswept."

He nodded. "It's good to have people who know you well and accept who
you are without trying to change you." **Aishara is like that," he
smiled at the thought. **and to a certain extent Rhosyn.** "So have
you known them a long time?"

"J'nus for a few Turns. R'iss Impressed when I did, so a very long time.
It was nice to have a good friend through weyrlinghood. I should invite
him here, he'd love a visit."

"Thats good Kapera," he smiled. He lifted the back of her hand to his
lips. "I hope we will become friends too."

"I as well. It would be lovely to have people I know better," she said.

"Consider us at your disposal," he meant the global us to include
Mnoranth who was still enjoying his snuggle with the queen. He leaned
back in his chair with half a smile. "I believe I'm going to create a
dance just for your and we'll learn it for your next hatching feast.
Would you like that?"

"I think that would be marvelous. That's such a kind offer of you." And
wouldn't they both look amazing like that?

"Not at all," he said. "Now, I truly enjoyed our time together but I
do believe we have wing meetings shortly and I should change my
clothes." He grinned at her and winked.

"Wouldn't do to have you show up all wrinkled and unkempt," she agreed,
laughter in her tone. "I'll see you later, then."
