My New Relationship

After 3.5 years with the same old antiquated cell phone - which I have to say was quite cool back in the day, but now looks like something I dug up in an archaelogical dig - it was time to go out there and get a new one.  My old one had a lot of features that I loved - I could set each indivial tone to a different volume setting (my ring was quieter than my mail, my alarm gradually grew louder every couple seconds until I turned it off), it had perfect sized keys so I rarely ever hit the wrong one my mistake, plenty of room for all my decorative sumo straps, and my favorite feature was that it had a spring action top, so with a click of a button it would just flip open for me.  It was like those old communicator things from StarTrek, so if my phone started to ring I could just press the button, watch it fly open, put it to my ear and talk away...  The good old days...

But it could not send or recieve some files, see most websites, send information from phone to phone, or take video.  It was, sadly, time to retire my dear friend.

Please allow me a moment to say goodbye...


Farewell, dear Panasonic P252i.  We had some good times.  You have so many admirable qualities.   I wish I could hold onto you forever, but your battery dies faster now, your paint is chipping, your picture quality is just not up to standards anymore.  It's not that I'm shallow.  My needs have just changed, that's all.  It's not you, its me.  But I will always remember you the way you were the day I bought you.  Oh, how you dazzled me.  But now it's time to say goodbye...


Hello Nokia NM705i.  Please... be patient with me...  I'm just getting out of a long term relationship with P252i.  You have to understand that my ex and I will always be friends.  We have a connection that is just magical.  But you're the one I put in my pocket and carry with me now.  It's going to be an adjustment, for both of us.  But it will come in time.  You'll be hearing a lot of swearing as I fumble through the motions, but please understand, the issues are mine, not yours.  But I will try.  I will try not to compare you to other phones, even my beloved P252i.  I will learn to understand your needs and your qualities as I fit you into my life.  I will not try to change you by sticking stickers or dangly straps on you - you are perfect the way you are.  Welcome to my life, NM705i.  We are going to have many adventures together, and many long talks.  This is just the begining of a wonderful new relationship...

I have been experiencing a similar relationship issue on discovering the Palm no longer support my Tungsten T3.  This PDA does everything I want it to and is still working perfectly, scheduling every moment of my day, carrying my book lists, acting as a travel alarm, games console, cut-rate Kindle so I can read Word files of my old-fashioned books, and even working just fine as an emergency torch.

And now Palm makes phones with Internet and PDA functions.

I don't want a phone.  My phone is a phone and gets used for nothing else.  That's the way I like it.  Different device for each job.  I compartmentalise - so sue me.

What do you mean Palm Desktop won't work right on Vista and YOU HAVE NO INTENTION OF UPGRADING IT?  You sold me a device that will work for 10 or 15 years and four years later you want me to just shove it in a drawer and buy something new?  Huh? Huh?

Well, I'm off to find some new Internet friends - ones who can't bear to part with their T3s either.  And I bet they know how to make Palm Desktop work in Vista.

I'm not changing my phone. I'm quite happy with it and I don't need all the new functions. I use to make calls, send sms and play Village.
I have Sonata Arctica as a ring tone and picture of my children as a background. What else I would want?

I just got a new phone too!

I changed my Nokia (hey Paula Finnish phone, not a Japanes one!!!!) N80 for the N82 (basically a none sliding version of what I had plus a better camera.) Allegedly this one has a sat nav, but I'll stick to the old fashioned version also known as a map! So long as I can make and recieve calls and text messages I don't really care, that's just what the company offered me as an upgrade.

Yeah, I loved my phone... But people kept trying to send me information that I couldn't read.  And also there are mysterious paint bubbles around the ear piece that makes me wonder just what kind of crazy radiation that thing can send out...

I almost got this motorola phone, but they told me they were having reception problems with it way out in the country (which is pretty much everywhere around me...).  I think my brother had the same one back in the states.

I hate razors with a passion. Matt and I got one, and not only did the reception suck, but the phone was making calls every thirty minutes to a number in California, even when we were sleeping! In the end the ghost phone (as we loved to call it) cost us a few hundred minutes, and few hundred dollars.

Maybe it was the flasher in the picture making the calls?

No, actually the phone was calling back to motarola or something like that to keep everything update. Matt and I referred to the mysterious phone number as the "Mother Ship"
