My husband has used up our broadband allowance on planning a 5 week trip via Google Earth but I've wrestled with the now-dial-up-speed internet connection to ask this question:

What's your idea of the dream 5 week holiday?  Where, doing what, with whom?

My husband's holiday (as part of his year-long 60th birthday celebrations) is to take the back-est of back roads (and sometimes no roads) across from Townsville to Darwin in Australia.

Five weeks of camping out with his brothers and among spiders and snakes.   :datz:

Naturally I'm staying at home, though I will admit I did investigate travelling by air to Adelaide and by train (the Ghan) right up the middle of the country to meet them in Darwin for the wedding.

Then I thought, three days of lots of red dirt masquerading as scenery, humid heat when I get there, a wedding for a nephew I've never met, and three long flights home.  I think I'll save the money for a trip I might actually enjoy.

If I could take 5/6 weeks then it'd be one of two things.  To drive route 66 from Chicago to California, or to go to Australia and New Zealand

I would go to Europe, hands down.

Matt and I have been craving a Euro-trip for a long time, but the two main countries that we really really really want to visit are England and Spain.

Another consideration we've had is New Zealand.

I think you guys are really over-rating New Zealand.  It's just like the temperate parts of the US, but smaller.

It does kinda look a bit like Washington in parts...  But the landscape was rather pretty!

I'd still like to go there, though.  I have friends from there and it seems like a pretty laidback, friendly sort of place

I would have died to be a part of that. Those films are going to be remembered for generations. To be able to tell you great-grand-children who would still adore them "I was a part of that, you know"

You don't forget something like that.

The scene of the riders of Rohan and how they ran into Minas Tirith. A lot of those riders were real people.

...I wanted to be one of those that were part of the calvary charge...I want to ride a horse... *sniff*

Yeah, that's what they wanted us for - stupid battle scenes.  In winter.  In the Southern Alps.  Man, a tented camp in winter in the South Island?

I'm going to tell my great-grandkids they had a smart woman for their great-grandmother!

Yeah, I told her that I hate camping, but I'd have sucked it up and done it.

Instead she'll go down in history as the person who didn't want to be a part of LotR

So I take it that your 5-week dream holiday would be camping out on the set of the LotR movie?

Me, I'm thinking a round-the-world cruise.  No unpacking, five weeks of reading, eating, and lazing around.  Getting off to see sights only if I want to.
