Odd Hobbies

What about going to the 'Cons' / conventions Americans seem to have in the sf/f world?  Anyone ever been to one of those?

I do Cons!  Comic*Con, actually  :D  It's a BLAST.  My friends and are making it tradition to go every year.  I've been for the past 2 years...this year will make it 3!  I usually go for 2 days and a night...it's so worth it.  I've met famous fantasy/scifi artists, met fantasy/scifi authors, have seen famous people (like some of the cast from LOST :love5: and Carrie Fisher and people like that....)  There's so much to do there...I can't wait for this year's!

I've taken up rock climbing, which I think is a fairly stupid thing to do because of the potential to bang your knees and fall off stuff.

Aside from that, I'm a big fan of B-movies. I recently scored when I bought Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" on VHS for $3. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it's the sequel to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". There's a giant crab, a giant dodo bird, and pirates! And Yankees and Confederates! And shipwrecked English ladies! I also have a soft spot for noir.

I knit... my Mom is convinced that it is odd.

Before I got my new kitten I learned how to felt (knitting with wool, then purposely shrinking it) and how to knit on double-pointed needles, because I found a cool pattern for a cat bed (and I had a very long time to wait before I could pick her up and I needed something to do with myself). Of course, the pattern called for some eyelash yarn at the top to make it pretty... Crazy little Sina saw it for the first time and immediately tried to eat the eyelash yarn! So, my very ambitious project that I had to learn all sorts of new skills for, it put away in a drawer!

I'm home from the book fair now.  Two hours queuing in a frost.  Six of us non-locals chittering away like magpies for a couple of hours before the doors opened.  How much quicker did we get to the books than my husband and father who don't queue but turn up at opening time?  Oh, about 35 seconds.

I got 7 books.

One I'll probably discard (Mary Stewart - badly foxed).  Two I will put aside for the collector group sale next year (Noel Streatfield and Carolyn Keene).  One goes into a set I'm building for sale on eBay (Helen Dore Boylston).  One will go for sale on the NZ auction site (Angela Thirkell).

And the last two are worth a good few dollars (Elizabeth Cadell) - they'll go on eBay to do their very best to balance my book budget.

Nothing for me.

I don't think I have an "odd" hobbies. Though, my fiance looked at me like I was from another planet when I tried to explain the pbem thing to him when we first met. But, he likes to read what I write and I sometimes show him my favorite stories from other members. He probably still thinks I'm nuts.

I used to dog sled. But, that isn't anything odd... I don't think.

One of my hobbies that wasn't really my hobby has fallen by the wayside. My daughter collected Pez dispensers, so while she was at college I kept buying new ones for her. When I moved, I packed up all of them and stored them in my mom's attic -- about 300 of them. Since then I need to remind myself that I am not buying any more of them.

I don't count knitting as a odd hobby...I do that too! Although lately I've been learning crochetry.  

Now, Triad is what I would call odd hobby.

Back when I had my Windows gaming desktop with me, I used to play 4-6 hours of Guild Wars a day online with my guildies. I think that counts as odd.

I  scrapbook and make cards.

I'm actually going to be taking classes next term in basic card making and I have to do a demo again this term on the basic methods.

Anyone who got a Chrissy card from me last year, got a home made one, made while hubby was having haemodialysis.  Five hours of sitting, twiddling thumbs or playing binni, or poker, or rummy, didn't last long.

So for three weeks I took my scrapping trolley into the haemo ward with us, and scrapped while he had his blood cleaned.

Forty something Christmas cards later he switched to peritoneal dialysis.  And when the local scrapping shop owner saw what I'd done with all my purchases I scored a casual job.

*dances*  But I have to wait until next tern to start teaching.

My hobbies are mostly normal... the weird thing is probably that I like to do them all. :D

I like to knit, quilt, sew, felt, bead, make jewelery, build things... ANYTHING pretty much that has anything to do with creating things. I love woodworking and wish I had a house so I could set up my power tools for that. :D

I just love to make stuff. I sew clothing that I wear, make my own jewlery, knit my own scarves and hats, felt my own bags, make the pillows and curtains in our living room... I would make everything in my life if I had the time and resources!

And, of course, I like to build websites, play with computers, program databases... :p
