Odd Hobbies

Not that I think my hobby is odd, but then all my friends share mine.

I queue at book fairs.

It's a consequence of being a book collector, but not all collectors want to attend the charity book sales that spring up in all the big (and many small) towns in New Zealand during 'the season' (Apr - Oct).  Some collectors just don't think that what they collect will be donated for the charity to sell, some don't like the crowd and the uncertainty.

But others of us are the problem gamblers of the book fair world. We can be found queuing for up to 5 hours for the *chance* that something we want is in there.  We travel all round the country, the same crowd, and stand and chat for hours before the local people turn up to queue.  It's a social activity for us, nearly as much fun as the book fair itself.

Okay, that's mine.  What are your less-than-usual hobbies?  What do you do that makes most people go 'Huh?' when you try to explain?

I have no unusual hobbies -- I'm a very normal person.

Unless, of course, you want to count my collection of windchimes. That's not really unusual, is it?

And aside from Triad, my main hobby is playing Runescape. I lead a very dull life.

I cross stitch and watch sumo.  Those are my two odd hobbies.

I don't really have any odd hobbies...  But I do draw when inspired    And my winter hobby is skiing.

I do tatting (a form of Victorian lace making), belly dance, SCA, and research history (or anything else that sounds interesting). I also write extensively and read, but that hardly seems weird in Triad.  :cyclopsani:

Well I do a LOT of weird things (or so my friends think) but m ost of them wouldn't be considered hobbies.  My normal hobbies are drawing, writing, reading, sleeping, eating and daydreaming.  But I do have some odd hobbies:

I like to read in awkward positions.  I'll flip myself upside down in the chair, or sit in it like a cat, or have half my body under the covers (like left and right not top and bottom) the other half on top of them.  And my personal favorite: I read with one eye open.  I don't know why, I just do.

I sing with my MP3 player even when there are people there and I'm supposed to be quiet.  I just like music.

I like to multitask.  I'll be doing my homework, replying on Triad, reading a book, watching T.V., AND eating supper all at the same time.  Sometimes I sing to my MP3 player too, if I'm feeling ambitious.

I like to craft weapons.  Not REAL ones, but wooden replicas.  Then I spar with them with my friends.

And my personal favorite:

I spend HOURS philosophizing with my friends about the inner emotions of fictional characters and the underlying principals about fictitious worlds.  And if theres no one around to talk to I'll explain it to MYSELF.  Take just last night; I was watching Avatar: The Last Airbender (the ONLY cartoon I watch anymore) and the episode actually had nothing to do with what I was pondering about , just the world in general.  So I got into a heated discussion about the Avatar State and how Aang's predecessor's can control it because they mastered the elements the conventional way and how that Aang had to use the funky Chi way because he was pressed for time.  And that the other Avatar's could have personal relationships and he couldn't because they had mastered the elements (and thus the Avatar State) natually and didn't need all this Chacra mumbo-jumbo.  And if you want to have ANY idea of what I'm talking about I'd suggest watching the episodes because it won't be the same if I explain it.

What about going to the 'Cons' / conventions Americans seem to have in the sf/f world?  Anyone ever been to one of those?

Yup, I do the con stuff :D  We have a few small ones in the Kansas City area that I go to, but I'm most looking forward to DragonCon in Atlanta.  I believe a few others from Triad are going as well.  The costumes I doing this year are Menolly, The Black Cat (from Spiderman), Teyla and Elizabeth Weir (from Stargate Atlantis) and my husband is going as Sheppard and McKay (also from Stargate Atlantis).

But yes, I have as much trouble explaining this to people as I do explaining the book fair queuing thing.

Yeah, people have a hard time understanding my McKay/Weir shipping obsession when I explain it to them too.   I think my friends think just about everything I do is odd...
