Kaiafel leaned over and looked at the little boy's masterpiece. He
nodded approvingly. "That's pretty good. Is that Kalamath?"
"Yes, it is," Ravyan replied. He was developing in to rather good
drawer, whether or not he got from his mother or sire was up to
anybody's guess. "Can't get the colour right," he added with some
frustration. Closest he could get was yellow-brown.
"Try just a little black?" Kaiafel suggested. He wasn't sure if that
would work, but Kalamath was definitely darker.
"Hhhmm," Ravyan said and picking up the colour, tested the compination
of colours at the edge of the drawing. "Nope, went all black."
Kaiafel did not want to seem wrong in front of his little brother,
even if he might be. "You're pressing too hard. Just a little light
layer."
"Do you want to draw this?" Ravyan asked, souding very much like her
mother when she was angry. He also had his mother's look: dark brown,
curling hair and large eyes. His eyes were brown though, not hazel.
He tried applying the colours in different order, black first and got
more satisfying result.
And just like his father, Kaiafel immediately felt smaller under his
gaze. He let the kid work on it a moment or two and then offered a
pacifying, "Da's really going to like it."
"I hope so. He needs it, he seemed so sad last time," Ravyan replied.
"And mom was angry."
Kaiafel's brow furrowed in much the same way as his father's did.
"Da's sad because he misses us so much."
"I miss him too," Ravyan replied. He chewed thoughtfully his colour.
"I'm not sure if mom is angry because she misses him too or for
something else." He absently scratched Timor who was keeping them
company.
"I _know_ she misses him," Kaiafel said with conviction. "She said as
much to me once. And Da misses her. You can tell because he always
asks a lot of questions about her when we see him."
"Yeah," Ravyan grunted. "Does grown up get angry when they've sad?
'couse that's my mom's like. Sad and angry at the same time."
"Definitely. I mean, I've been sad and angry at the same time." And
now he was out of Harper school, so that was pretty grown up! "I
think your ma just forgets that she loves Da. I mean she's told me
straight out that she still loves him, and I believe her. But she's
too mad to remember it most of the time."
"My mom can get pretty mad," Ravyan agreed, having been the receiving
end many times.
"Yeah. She can be scary." She could even scare his Da, and he was a
Weyrleader and usually not scared of anything! "But don't worry. Da
will come back someday. And when he does, he'll fix it all and she'll
remember why she loved him."
"I hope so, I don't like when people are angry or sad," Ravyan said.
Kaiafel put a brotherly arm around the kid's shoulder. "Well, I know
for sure when Da sees this," he tapped the page on the table, "he'll be
happy again."
"Yh-yhm," Ravyan agreed and concentrated on his drawing a bit.
Knowing the boys were in her weyr, Aileyan had rushed her bath and
then gotten them something to eat from the kitchens. Neither of them
had notices of her arrival, so she was just standing there and
listening.
"Don't forget to sign your name. That's the most important part,"
Kaiafel reminded the little artist.
"Course not," Ravyan replied and carefully spelled his name with large
block letters.
Aileyan wondered if she should clear her throat or something, but they
were so cute together and she didn't want to disturb them. She also
felt guilty of eavesdropping them.
"Look at that. Even your name looks like art." Kaiafel ruffled his
little brother's hair just like adults seemed to like to do to his.
"This for sure will make Da happy. And don't worry, Da won't give up
on your mom. He'll come back and make her remember she loves him, and
we'll be a family again."
Aileyan felt a stab to her heart, one of longing and regret. So, her heart was not all the way turned to stone yet.
