"You look too old to be a Candidate and too young to be the mother of
one. So let's see, you're a..." Haroon made a show of leaning
forward to look at the woman's knots. "My, a Wingthird. I don't meet
one of them everyday."

"Mother of two, actually," Jeyme said, smiling at the man as he leaned
toward her. He looked like he'd already had at least one cup of wine,
but there was a harmless appreciation in his eyes that kept her from
automatically taking a step back.

"You're the mother of two _Candidates_?" he asked in obvious surprise.
"No, I don't believe that."

Jeyme laughed and shook her head, "No, not Candidates, just normal
small children." Her eyes went to his shoulder. "And I see that you
are a runner from the Topaz area?"

"I am," he nodded with a broad smile. "I took a little detour from my
usual route to join in the fun."

"You're lucky to have a job that affords you that flexibility," Jeyme said.

"Well, even Runners are allowed a little personal time in
extraordinary circumstances." He nodded towards the door to leading
towards the Hatching Caverns they had all just come from. "I took in
my sister and niece after her husband died, and I look at that girl
almost as if she's my own. And now she has a little green."

"That's wonderful, a special evening for you. Are you going to wait
around to talk to her after the Weyrlings have settled their new
dragonets in for the evening?" Jeyme asked.

"Well, longer than that, I hope! There is a feast, after all. And
dancing?" he asked, giving her a hopeful smile. "I do like a good
dance, especially with an enticing partner."

Jeyme returned the man's smile, "You're in luck then," she leaned in
conspiratorially, "I am an excellent dancer."

"Well, now, Wingthird, are you asking me to dance?" he asked, pressing
his fingers to his chest as if pleasantly surprised by the invitation.

"I believe I am." Jeyme held out her hand, "I am Jeyme, of Green
Quinneth. Allow me to show you some Dolphin Cove hospitality....?" She
trailed off so that he could fill in his name.

"Haroon. Runner out of Black River in Topaz Seahold territory. My
duty to you and yours." He took her hand and made a show of bowing to
kiss it. "And I am very interested in what Dolphin Cove hospitality
might have in store for me. Perhaps a drink as well as dance?"

The greenrider was all smiles. She had a feeling that this man was
someone who knew how to have fun, and that was what she really needed
at the moment. "Why of course, you can't receive true hospitality here
without a good drink to go with the dancing." Jeyme looped her arm
through Haroon's as they walked toward the Dining Cavern where others
were also streaming in for food, drink and dancing.

"And what is your drink of choice?" he asked as he bent his arm to
cradle hers against his body.

"A dark red wine," Jeyme replied, before adding, "although I don't
mind the fruitier drinks they mix up either."

"Ah, forgive me, I am just a common Runner," he said, laying a humble
hand over his heart. "Just give me a pint at the end of the day, and
I am a happy man."

Jeyme ran an appreciative eye over Haroon, "You don't look like just a
'common' Runner."

He threw his head back in a hearty laugh. "Well, I have to say, I do
like this Dolphin Cove hospitality! I had better be careful, with
talk like that, the promise of a good drink and a gorgeous dancing
partner, I'm liable to end up leaving my heart in your Weyr."

"That sounds like it should be a harper song," Jeyme said as they
entered the festively decorated Dining Cavern.

"With a rhythm suitable to run to," Haroon agreed, leading her into the throng.
