Harki blew her hair out of her face with a sigh, then picked up her tray and turned to survey the dining cavern. It was packed, one of the few afternoons that the Wings all seemed to be finished drills around the same time, and everyone was hungry. Too bad it was stew again. She was sick of bovine stew.
The greenrider started threading her way through the throngs, waving at friends and looking for a spare seat. The first gap she spotted was near the wall, and she was headed toward it before realizing who she'd be bumping elbows with. P'nal. She hesitated, having done her best to avoid the Wingsecond since her disastrous proposal and subsequent rejection. But she couldn't avoid him forever, so she slid her tray onto the table beside him and sat. "Howdy, Wingsecond."
He hadn't been watching her approach, instead focusing on the message he'd received from someone wanting a craft item commissioned. He didn't do it as often anymore, but when he had spare time during the cold months it gave him something to do. So when she spoke, his head came up and his dark eyes focused, showing surprise and then receding into a general wariness. P'nal was a brownrider, though, and he had never been called rude. "Greenrider."
He had gone to her weyr once, just to talk, but he had heard laughter-hers and someone else's. And then there had been other sounds. The brownrider knew exactly what that meant and it might have even stung a little that she hadn't even waited. That was all she had wanted, right? Someone for the furs? So why did it surprise him? Why did it matter to him that she had done exactly what she promised by not living up to his expectations of her? **Maybe I can eat this in four bites.**
She picked up her fork and prodded at a lump of something stewed. "How're you doing?"
"Oh you know...same as always. Work, sleep, dragon-in that order." No, he had no adventures to brag about and nothing to call himself a hero for. She risked her life same as he did fighting thread so that was nothing new. For a fleeting moment, he wished he could be like G'nir or J'darin-they had no problems impressing women. Maybe that was why he had Impressed brown, instead.
}:I chose you, mine because you are the only one for me:{ Jodeth's tone might have been a little hurt had he not known what his rider was feeling and why. }:You are strong and you are there whenever they need you. You hold it all together, day in and day out:{
Oblivious, Harki continued with her attempt at friendliness. "Are you working on any Tanner projects?"
"I have a few side things going for people who've made commissions but nothing substantial. Don't have much time for crafting these days though anyway." No, it was mostly something to supplement his riding now. P'nal had the finest trousers, jackets, belts, boots, and straps amongst the riders of Dragonsfall and he knew it. Biting off a fingerroot, he chewed. Felt the same as the way she was chewing on his heart. Wincing, he put it down without finishing.
"That's too bad. You do good work." The greenrider stirred her stew again. Perhaps she should have sat somewhere else... and maybe found something else to eat.
"Thanks, I appreciate that." Quiet as he went over in his mind the million things he could say and vetoing them all, he watched her as he had done for so many turns. She was so familiar to him and yet so far away that he couldn't touch her. "So do you." Getting up, he wiped his mouth on one of the linen squares and headed in the direction of the scullery. There was nothing else to say that hadn't been said.
