Nice For A Fosterling

Writers: Emma, Michelle
Date Posted: 10th February 2006

Characters: Chynna, Fieayz
Description: Chynna meets Fieayz for the first time and decides that the girl is a lot friendlier than originally expected.
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 10, day 2 of Turn 3

Chynna notied Fieayz enter the kitchens, but chose to ignore her. She recognized the girl as the new fosterling from the Vinter Hall. As a Hallmaster's daughter the other girl was likely to be damanding and spoiled, and Chynna had not interest in waiting upon a girl her own age.

"Excuse me?" said Fieayz politely.

"Yes?" Chynna asked a little too politely as she turned around to face the fosterling.

"Could you tell me where I could find the stores?" asked Fieayz. Otrina had asked her to check which herbs they had and what the hall needed to buy.

"Just over there," the drudge said, pointing with her finger, "Want me to show you?"

"If you could," replied Fieayz. "I'm not disturbing anything am I?"

"Not at all," Chynna said, warming up a bit to the other girl. Fieayz didn't seem as demanding as Chynna had assumed that she would be.

"Have you been here long?" asked Fieayz politely. Dhe hadn't really met that many people at the Smith Hall yet, well not girls her own age. Otrina was nice, but there was something about having a gang of friends that she missed. That was the way it had been at the Weyr, and she missed all the young people there.

"All my life," Chynna answered, working hard to refrain from telling the story of her apprenticship- it would only get her in trouble if Daynar found out she was telling _that_ story.

"Really, I grew up at the Viontner Hall, until I went to the Weyr."

'The Weyr?" Chynna asked, genuinely interested, "why?" Secretly she sometimes thought about running away to the Weyr. Then she would be able to practice her craft properly, instead of just borrowing Nyblek's notes. But she knew that she wouldn't be able to leave her mother behind, and there was no way that Lanna would agree to moving.
"Mama, well my parents had problems, and she took us away with my Uncle, he's a brownrider at River Bluff," began Fieayz as they reached the stores.
"It was certainly different there."

"I bet," Chynna responded before asking, "it _is_ true that they let women be crafters, isn't it?"

"Yes," she said in a low tone, well aware of what the Hallmaster would think of that kind of talk. "I, I was tempted to stay, and try myself, but I missed my father, and my brother."

"What would you have chosen as a craft?" Chynna asked curiously.

"Baking maybe? I don't know."

"That could be fun, but I'd probably go into smithing," Chynna supplied.

"Is that because you grew up here?"

"I guess partially, but I am," Chynna faltered, "was really good at it."

"You apprenticed?"

"Only for a few months," Chynna said, "then Daynar kicked me out again."

"That must have hurt," said Fieayz. "I don't know that I would have stayed."

"I grew up here," Chynna explained, "and my mother lives here still. Plus there is always hope that maybe Daynar will change his mind."

"He'll change his mind when he changes his ideas on firelizards," stated Fieayz. "My Arva can't stand him."

"Your gold right?" Chynna asked curiously. She hadn't seen the flit yet, but she had heard rumours.

Fieayz nodded, "She's in my rooms, safest place for her."

"I'm trying to train my two to stay with me at all times. They'll listen, but they don't like it much," Chynna laughed, "except when I'm washing dishes."

"You have two?"

"A well-behaved brown and a troublesome green," Chynna replied fondly.
Despite her many complaints she truly loved both of her flits.

"I'm trying to find a way to keep her safe, but it can be difficut, when she rises."

"Has she risen yet?" Chynna asked curiously. She knew how aggravated Daynar would be with hatchings around the Hall, and the image amused her.

"Last month - she only picked Daynar's dinner party as a good time as well."

"That's when I would have chosen to rise, were I a firelizard," Chynna giggled, "I bet it didn't make him too happy."

"I don't think he noticed," replied Fieayz with a grin. "But the Harper who's bronze caught her certainly did ."

"A harper?" Chynna giggled, "that must have been ackward. I know what its like when my green rises, but a gold!"

"It was... interesting." Fieayz took a moment to decide on the words, "Yes interesting."

Chynna laughed, "well I better let you get to work. Plus I've got to run back up to the kitchens. I'm sure they'll be sending someone to look for me in a moment."

"Me too probably," replied Fieayz with a laugh of her own. "It was good to meet you."

**Well that wasn't so bad,** Chynna thought to herself, **Fieayz seemed nice. For a fosterling.**
