"He's coming, right Ma?" Kaibren's face, still rather round at nine
Turns of age, was beaming up at Saibra as he tugged on the sleeve of
her sweater.

"Yes, I promise." Saibra cupped her son's face with one hand, "Now, go
on and play." She shooed him away with the other weyrbrats who had
come for Kaibren's birthingday party.

"I can't believe you invited him." The words were spoken from a
greenrider, her brows raised with amusement as she lifted a steaming
cup of klah to her lips.

Saibra rolled her eyes, "Well, it wasn't my choice, I can assure you.
Kaibren begged. Faranth knows why he is so drawn to his uncle."

Emyai smiled, "Perhaps because it's like having K'fel back?"

"K'fel and K'yne are nothing alike." Saibra snapped, cutting her eyes
at K'fel's younger sister.

"Still in denial I see." Emyai said smoothly, not at all intimidated
by Saibra's bad mood.

"I don't know what you are talking about," Saibra smoothed her hands
over her hair. "K'yne and I have never gotten along, not even when
K'fel was alive."

Emyai pushed up from her seat, her eyes flicking to the children who
were playing on Chioneth's ledge, tracking snow everywhere. "Just be
easy on him today, hm?" She put her hand on Saibra' s shoulder, "He
misses his nephew, and obviously Kaibren misses his uncle."

"I'll do my best." Saibra ground out, although she found it hard to
remain in a bad mood around Emyai. The woman reminded Saibra of all of
the good qualities that K'fel had possessed, like his quick wit and
humor.

}:Arinoth and his rider are here.:{ Chioneth said as a brown landed.

The brownrider strode confidently into Saibra's weyr, the set of his
shoulders, the way he walked, everything about him exuded an air of
arrogance. K'yne had the same dark gold, nearly brown hair as K'fel,
the same strong jawline, and broad shoulders. The only major
difference was that K'yne was taller, and his eyes were a blue so dark
they were nearly black. After she had left Far Island she had hoped to
never see the man again.

"Emyai," his baritone voice even sounded like K'fel's. He smiled and
enveloped his sister in a hug, "Long time no see. How have you been?"
He held his sister at arms length to look her over.

"I am fine," Emyai laughed.

"And your flavor of the month? What was his name?"

"Bayce..."

"Ah yes, Bayce, how is he?"

Emyai rolled her eyes and gave K'yne a playful slap on the shoulder.

The brownrider's dark eyes turned to Saibra, and the moment she had
been dreading finally arrived.

"Hello K'yne." She kept her voice deceptively cool, her most-practiced
Weyrwoman voice.

The playfulness that K'yne had shown to Emyai was gone, his face set
in stone, his posture stiff, "Saibra. Or should I call you Weyrwoman?"

"My name will suffice." Saibra responded in a clipped tone.

There was a long moment of awkward, tense silence as the two stared at
one another, neither willing to break eye contact first.

"You came!" Kaibren's joyful voice broke the tension as the boy came
bounding toward his uncle.

K'yne's smile reappeared as he turned and scooped Kaibren up, drawing
the boy easily from his feet, "Of course I came!" He speared Saibra
with a look from over the top of Kaibren's head that said, 'You
couldn't keep me away if you tried.'

Clenching her teeth together, Saibra turned and busied herself with
arranging the gifts that had arrived for Kaibren. There was a small,
wrapped gift from Saidrene as well, who was unable to attend because
of her young dragonet at Dolphin Cove.

"Will you come outside and play with us?" Kaibren asked hopefully.

"I will, but I need to speak with your mother first. You go ahead. I
will be right there."

"Okaayyy." Kaibren sighed but did as his uncle asked.

K'yne looked at Emyai and tilted his head toward the door. The
youngest of K'fel's siblings held her hands up and walked out to join
the children, leaving K'yne and Saibra alone.

"When are you going to let it go, Saibra? It has been six Turns."
K'yne crossed his arms over his chest.

Without looking at him, Saibra answered back, "I will never let it go.
It changed my life. It has made me become someone that I never
intended to be."

The brownrider's jaw clenched, "He was dead, Saibra."

"I am well aware of that!" She hissed back viscerally.

K'yne took a deep breath, as if on the verge of losing his temper. But
then, Saibra had a way of making him do that, "I don't understand you.
Do you scorn all of the men you sleep with? You must not or there
wouldn't be a sane man left on Pern!"

Saibra's mouth dropped open, "You were his brother! You should have
known better! I was weak and hurting!"

"Oh, don't give me that line." K'yne barked out a humorless laugh,
"Don't even try to insinuate that I took advantage. You knew full well
what you were doing."

The brownrider was opening up old, festering wounds that Saibra had
long since buried beneath layers of promiscuous behavior and good
times. He was bringing back memories that she didn't want, or need.

"I am not rehashing this again, K'yne. Nothing has changed! I still
loathe you with every breath I take!" Saibra jabbed her finger at him
to punctuate each word.

K'yne's eyebrows lifted marginally, but other than that her words
seemed to have little effect on the brownrider, "Well, you are going
to have to get use to seeing me, sweetheart, because I already put in
my transfer papers to Dragonsfall two days ago."

For a second time Saibra's mouth fell open, "You... You did what?! I
forbid it. I am the Weyrwoman, and I forbid it!"

The man gave an infuriating shrug, "That is out of your jurisdiction,
sweetheart. I have an excellent resume, a near perfect Threadfall
record, and experience as a Wingsecond. No Weyrleader in their right
mind would turn me away."

Saibra's mouth opened and closed repeatedly, making her look like a
fish out of water as she processed the man's words. Shardit but he was
right and she knew it! Finally she spluttered, "Shut up! And stop
calling me sweetheart!"

"Just accept it, Saibra. I am not going anywhere." And with that K'yne
turned and strode outside, just as confidently as he had strode in.
Saibra watched as Kaibren turned toward his uncle with a look of pure
adoration on his face.

It was as if the walls of her weyr were closing in on her. She was
going to be in the same Weyr as K'yne....

"Shit."
